Browne leads the Senior US Open at Inverness GC in Toledo

As it always seems to be in Toledo in July, it's hot and humid, and veteran player and sometimes announcer Olin Brown is your 1st round leader at the tough Inverness GC hosting this US Senior Open.

Browne eagled two holes in a five-hole span coming down the stretch and finished with a 7-under 64. Two strokes back were Mark O'Meara and Michael Allen, who each shot bogey-free 66s. O'Meara who has not been a factor of note on this Champions tour, did win the 1998 Open Championship, and if you ever wondered about the opportunities winning that major provides you with look at his travel schedule over the last month.

He played in the Champions Tour event at Pebble Beach, then the Open Championship at Sandwich, then the Senior Open at Walton Heath, then he flew back across the Atlantic on Sunday night to his home in Houston, where he spent two days before flying up to Toledo for this US Senior Open.

A shot behind them is amateur Damon Green (67),who is Zach Johnson's regular caddie, along with Steve Jones and Mark Wiebe.

In the pack at 68 are Mark Calcavecchia, Corey Pavin and Jeff Sluman.

Jim Rutledge is at +2 73 and Rod Spittle +3 74

Of note Hale Irwin, winner of three U.S. Opens, including the one held 32 years ago at Inverness, was once again in contention in a major at age 66. He shot a 69.
