Jason Dufner/Zach Johnson

Result....US wins 3&2 after Europe led 1up at the turn.

Match 4: Ian Poulter/Justin Rose vs.
Steve Stricker/Tiger Woods

Result   Europe never trailed winning 2&1..Tiger was all over the course..

 Europe 2    USA 2

Afternoon fourball matches and results

Match 5..B Watson/ W Simpson vs P Lawrie / P Hanson
Result... US wins 5&4 with Bubba the sparkplug off the first tee pumping up the crowd. This was a beating

Match 6... P Mickelson / K Bradley  vs  R McIlroy / GMcDowell
Result.. US wins 2&1 with Keegan Bradley continuing to lead the way..US was 4up by the 8th.

Match 7..D Johnson / M Kuchar  vs  J Rose / M Kaymer
Result  . US wins 3&2  as they took over on the 4th and never looked back.. Kaymer out of form..

Match 8 .. T Woods / S Stricker  vs  L Westwood / N Colsaerts
Results... Europe wins 1up after a helluva day by the Belgian who had 7 birdies and an eagle

USA 3   Europe 1

Day 1 Result     USA 5  Europe 3

Yesterday I wrote about who the spark plug would be for the Yanks and after both sides sawed off the morning foursomes Bubba Watson answered that question to lead off the afternoon when he pumped up the crowd, asking them to keep roaring as he drove, and he and Webb Simpson overwhelmed Paul Lawrie and Peter Hanson, then Keegan Bradley came right out after Bubba and kept the roars going with putt after putt, 10 birdies in all as they held off the superMac's.

If it wasn't for Nicolas Colsaerts having an all time record breaking round for a Ryder Cup rookie, eight birdies and an eagle to beat Woods and Stricker almost single handed, this might be over already at 6-2.

Saturday synopsis

Ian Poulter started Saturday taking on the crowd and Bubba Watson on the first tee and finished off Saturday with 5 straight birdies, finally and emphatically pumping a little life into his beat up European team.

Down 5-3, it was clear Saturday had to belong to Ollie's team to give them any chance in the US dominated Sunday singles.

It didn't happen, the Yanks led by an exuberant Keegan Bradley, and a very steady Jason Dufner and Zack Johnson won the morning foursomes 3-1 to go up 8-4 and the rout was on until Poulter's heroics gave his team a little hope, as they split the fourball matches 2-2 to trail 10-6 heading into Sunday, where the US only needs 41/2 points out of 12 possible..... I told you it was a little hope..

The Sunday singles are out, and I have listed my analysis after the following recap

Saturday morning foursomes

Match 9.   B Watson /W Simpson  vs  J Rose/ I Poulter 8.20am est
Result..Poulter took on the crowd and Bubba on the first then put his money where his mouth was winning the first hole and eventually Europe won a tight match 1up.

Match 10..  K Bradley / P Mickelson  vs  L Donald / L Westwood 8.30am est
Result.. Keegan Bradley is just on fire, Lee Westwood is not.. this was over early, finished on the 12th green  a 7&6 thrashing for the US

Match 11...  J Dufner / Z Johnson  vs  N Colsaerts / S Garcia 840am est
Result.. Big Nick made everything on Friday, and as so often happens made nothing on Saturday, and the steady and at times spectacular Dufner and Johnson pair were in front all the way, it ended when Colsaerts hit it into the water at the par 3 17th... US wins 2&1

Match 12.. J Furyk / Brandt Snedeker  vs  R McIlroy / G McDowell 850am est
Result..  The Yanks led all the way in a close match, Rory made a clutch putt on 16, then left one on the lip at 17, before Furyk hit a beauty from the fairway bunker at 18, and GMac made a mess of his wedge from 125 yards.. US won 1up

Saturday afternoon fourball matches

Match 13 .. D Johnson/ M Kuchar vs Nicolas Colsaerts / P Lawrie
Result..This was close and A/S at 16, but big DustinJ made a putt across the green at 17 for the difference as US won 1up

Match 14.. BWatson / WSimpson  vs JRose / FMolinari
Result..  I was surprised to see this pairing from Ollie, they went down early, never led and it was all over from this inspired American pairing on the 14th green.. US wins 5&4

Match 15..  TWoods / SStricker  vs  SGarcia / Luke Donald
Result.. European pair finally playing up to expectations were 4 up at the turn but Tiger who hasn't won a point in this event got it down to 1up with a  beauty putt on 16, then hit it to 6 feet on 17, only to see Donald put his tee shot inside him to halve the hole. Europe won 1up

Match 16... JDufner / ZJohnson  vs  RMcIlroy / IPoulter
Result..  This match turned when Rory birdied 13 to get it to 1down, then Poulter birdied 15, 16,17 and 18 for a sensational finish and the 1up win to give his mates a little hope for the singles..

USA 10    Europe 6

Sunday single matches

Match 17... BWatson  vs  LDonald
Result ..I did pick Luke, he had Bubba alone, and after they both birdied the first he took over. 2 up on the 5th he missed a 10 footer to go 3up and rolled it 3 feet past. Bubba waved him to pick up and for me it was over right there.Europe 2up

Match 18.. WSimpson   vs  IPoulter
Result..I said 2&1 for Poulter and he won 2up, but not until he took the final 2 holes after a tight match..

Match 19.. KBradley  vs RMcIlroy
Result.. Rory never trailed and in true world #1 fashion he won it 2up on 17.. turned to the crowd and took a bow..Rory almost missed his tee time, got mixed up with central and eastern time, arrived in a cop car 10 minutes before, and beat USA's best player !! Europe is now up 3 on the day

Match 20.. PMickelson  vs  JRose
Result..  Everyone picked Phil who was 1up on 16 but Justin won 17 and the the coup de gracie ! he birdied 18, to shock the crowd, maybe even himself, and won 1up

Match 21..  BSnedeker  vs  PLawrie
Result... I did warn all about Lawrie, he came through in spades and capped off his best year with a 5&3 thrashing of another US stud..  amazing  5 wins for Europe

Match 22... DJohnson vs  NColsaerts
Result....All square on 13, Big Dustin won 14 15 and wrapped it up on 16 to win 3up

Match 23..   ZJohnson  vs  GMcDowell
Result..  GMac fought hard but Zack was too steady, never trailed and won 2&1 as ...well as someone predicted..

Match 24..   JFuryk   vs SGarcia
Result...Sergio was behind all day, but he birdied 17 to get even then won 18 with a par 4 when Furyk swallowed a bitter pill and missed an 10 footer... Europe wins again, they are at 12 points..

Match 25..   JDufner vs  PHanson
Result...Dufner was 4up at the turn, got a bit sloppy and let the big Swede back in, and he fought back to only 1down going to 18, but Dufner made 4 to Hanson's 5 to win for the USA

Match 26..    MKuchar  vs  Lee Westwood
Result.. this match was all square on 11, but Westwood won 12, 13 and 15 to upset Kuchar 3&2.. wow !! Now they have 13 points !!

Match 27..   SStricker  vs  MKaymer
Result... Tight match as the comeback is now in full swing. A/S on 16, Stricker misses a short one to bogey 17 to Kaymer's par, then Kaymer makes an 8 footer for par to win 1 up and damn it Europe gets to 14 points and Martin runs across the green, jumps into his captains arms and the celebrations begin...

Match 28   TWoods  vs  FMolinari
Result..  Tiger's match didn't matter as I predicted... but for the wrong reason.. Europe had returned the 1999 favour from Brookline, equalling the biggest comeback of all time, as Tiger made 5 to Molinari's 4 to leave the match AS

This most incredible of days had so many story lines..for me all of them painted on the canvas provided by Seve. He was on their bags and most certainly in their hearts. Luke, Poulter, Rory, Justin and Paul Lawrie all did their jobs, winning the first 5 matches...then Sergio, Lee and out of form Martin Kaymer rescuing an indifferent season with the putt of his life.. they won it, they won it against all odds for their beloved captain, Seve's best friend, Jose Marie Olazabal..

What a day, as I have been saying all week, the most exciting 3 days in sport.

Prediction   USA 17 1/2    Europe  10 1/2
Result   USA 13 1/2    Europe 14 1/2

Fred Couples elected into Golf Hall of Fame

Associated Press
ATLANTA -- Fred Couples, a former Masters champion and one of the most popular figures in the game, was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

Couples described himself as a good player, but not a great player, though he's turned in some amazing performances.

Among his 15 wins on the PGA Tour are the 1992 Masters and two at The Players Championship, including an eagle-birdie-par finish in 1996. He played in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup five times each, and next year will be captain of the Presidents Cup for the third time. He was No. 1 in the world for four months in 1992.

"There are other people in the Hall of Fame that are maybe good players. But good is a good thing," Couples said from Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. "I've been good at it for a long time, and I hope to continue to play a few more years."

Couples was elected on the PGA Tour ballot with a record-low 51 per cent. The minimum for election is 65 per cent, although there is a clause that when no one gets the minimum, the leading vote-getter is elected provided he has at least 50 per cent of the vote.

Vijay Singh was elected in 2005 with 56 per cent.

Still to be announced are the results from the International ballot, along with who is selected from the Veteran's category and Lifetime Achievement to round out the 2013 class. The induction will be May 6 -- the Monday of The Players Championship -- at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla.

The voters consist of international golf and sports media, Hall of Fame members, golf and sports historians and dignitaries from each of the major golf organizations.

Couples jokingly referred to the election as a popularity contest, although it did raise questions.

Davis Love III, who has won 20 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1997 PGA Championship and The Players Championship twice, received 38 per cent of the vote. He tied for second in the voting with Ken Venturi, the 1964 U.S. Open champion who won 14 times and was the longtime analyst for CBS Sports.

Mark O'Meara won 16 times on the PGA Tour and two majors, both in 1998 when he became the oldest player to win two majors in one year. He was fourth in the voting with 36 per cent of the vote.

Couples was the best in the world in the early 1990s, particularly during the early part of the PGA Tour season. His career was hampered by back injuries in 1994, though he remained competitive at certain events -- especially Augusta National -- even after turning 50.

"I've won 15 times and a major and all that," Couples said. "But I think one of the things I've done well is played for a long time. Sometimes that is meaningless. I think when you get in the Hall of Fame, it's more about the finishes you've had, and I know a lot about the baseball Hall of Fame. I know a little bit about the football Hall of Fame, and the way they talk about some people not getting in and waiting a long time.

"For me, at my age of 52, I think it's certainly a great honour and great timing, because it will push me to play a couple more years and see how I can play."

Snedeker breaks the bank !... live scoreboards

All eyes are on Atlanta, Georgia this weekend where the top 30 players in the world are competing for the Fed Ex Cup and all the baubles that go with it, like $10m in cash not to mention a first prize of $1.4m..

PGA Tour
The Tour Championship by Coca Cola

Schedule: Thursday-Sunday
Course: East Lake Golf Club (7,319 yards, par 70)

pgatour.com...
Brandt Snedeker knew his best chance to be the FedExCup champion was to win the TOUR Championship, no simple task with East Lake as tough as ever and Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods going after the same prize.
Snedeker was the only player in the last five groups to break par.
He answered the final challenge with three big birdies on the back nine, building such a big lead that his final tee shot sailed into the grandstands to the left of the 18th green and it didn't even matter. Snedeker still closed with a 2-under 68 for a three-shot win in the TOUR Championship, and a $10 million bonus for winning the FedExCup.
His pay day...$11.4 million !!!

Rory 74 and Tiger 72 were out of it early, both well over par after 6 holes. Justin Rose 71 was 2nd, Luke Donald 67 and Ryan Moore 70 were 3rd..

Last year: Lexi Thompson became the youngest champion in LPGA Tour history at age 16, winning by five strokes. Last month, 15-year-old amateur Lydia Ko broke the record in the Canadian Women's Open.

Stacy Lewis started slow, but finished strong on Sunday to claim her third victory of the season at the Navistar LPGA Classic. The 27-year-old Texan carded a final-round 69 to edge defending champion Lexi Thompson by two shots and complete the “Alabama Slam” with victories this season at the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic and today in Prattville. The win is significant for Lewis, who now takes a 56 point lead in the Rolex Player of the Year race in her bid to become the first American since Beth Daniel in 1994 to claim the honor. (lpgatour.com)

Luke Guthrie fired a 6-under 66 in the final round of the Web.com Tour's WNB Golf Classic and rallied from five shots down to win for the second time in as many weeks.
Guthrie canned a 12-foot par putt on the 18th hole at Midland Country Club for a 17-under 271 total and waited as the last pairing of Cameron Percy and defending champion Danny Lee both failed to birdie the final hole of regulation, leaving them one shot back of the Tour's hottest player.
Guthrie, winner of last week's Albertsons Boise Open, picked up the winner's check for $99,000, which vaulted him to No. 1 on the money list with just five tournaments left to go on the schedule

Red-hot Russell wins French Riviera Masters

Englishman David J Russell put on a golfing master-class to win the French Riviera Masters, beating American Tim Thelen in a play-off after a brilliant 65 in the final round at Terre Blanche Resort and Golf Club.
The 58 year old needed three holes to win in sudden death, with both players twice making par at the 18th before Thelen bogeyed at the third attempt. That was his first dropped shot in 39 holes – two rounds of 66 taking him to eight under and tied for the lead in regulation play – but it handed the title to his rival, who made another four.
For much of the day it had looked to be Roger Chapman’s day, but there was late drama when the Englishman bogeyed the 16th and 18th to slip back to seven under with a 71. However, his consolation prize was that he now has an unassailable lead at the top of the Order of Merit and will be crowned Europe’s Number One after a remarkable season which has featured two Senior Major Championship victories

Amateur Brun seals fairytale victory in France

Julien Brun became the sixth amateur in history to win on the Challenge Tour after securing a nail-biting triumph at the ALLIANZ Golf Open Toulouse Metropole.

The Challenge Tour debutant delighted the sizeable crowd who had gathered at a windswept Golf de Toulouse-Seilh, in south west France, by following in the footsteps of his compatriot Romain Wattel, who won the ALLIANZ Europen Strasbourg as an amateur two years ago.

In an astonishingly mature performance which betrayed very few signs of his inexperience, Brun closed with a round of 70 for a 13 under par aggregate total and a one shot victory over Matteo Delpodio.

Final-round Notes and Interviews

Paula Creamer +1, Rolex Rankings No. 14
Lydia Ko +9, (a

Rolex Rankings No. 10 Jiyai Shin captured her second career major championship title in dominating fashion, shooting rounds of 71-73 in a 36-hole finale Sunday to take a record-breaking, nine-shot victory at the 2012 RICOH Women’s British Open.

Shin, who won the 2008 RICOH Women’s British Open at Sunningdale, finished at 9-under-par 279 and was the only player in the field this week who managed to finish under par at the difficult Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

After high winds on Friday caused the event to lose an entire day’s worth of the play, the tournament geared up for a 36-hole finish on Sunday. Players teed off for the third round early on Sunday morning and remained in the same groups as they worked to finish all 72 holes before the sun set on the final day of play

Both Lorie Kane and Samantha Richdale missed the cut...

Round 2 well underway at British Womens Open ..live scoreboard

Saturday September 15 7am

The winds have died down to 16kph and play is well under way in round 2 at Hoylake in England.. Click on link below for the latest scores..

Lorie Kane opened with +6 78 and Samantha Richdale +5 77...

CanadianPress posted Friday Sept 14..
HOYLAKE, England - Play was suspended at the Women's British Open because of strong winds that disrupted the second round so badly that organizers declared early scores "null and void."

With winds gusting up to 60 mph, players struggled to keep the ball on the tees and greens before the round was suspended after an hour's play on Friday.

Organizers announced the scores wouldn't count and play would start over again at 3 p.m. local time at the earliest.

Tournament director Susan Simpson says "it would have been unfair to those competitors not to declare play null and void and cancel all scores for the round."

England's Felicity Johnson started with a quintuple bogey 9. American Cristie Kerr had her ball blown off the 12th tee three times

New study on the state of golf in Canada...

A new study on the state of golf in Canada has been released, the details of which I have posted below along with links to the Canadian Golf Consumer Behaviour Study for all the actual numbers.

Here's what I say.. Part of the survey points out we have a golf community of 5.7 million and of those about a quarter are playing on a regular basis..The vast majority play in the company tournament, or in an annual outing with buddies, a few games here and there, hardly a recipe for financial success if you own a high end public golf course..

Most importantly for me are the numbers on young people playing. It is not news but underlines again, how few children aged 6-11 are playing golf.

Kids are on computers, iPhones and every other kind of phones all day every day. Getting them physically involved in main stream sports like baseball, hockey and football is a major problem and if you don't believe me talk to any doctor who will list obesity and the onset of type 2 diabetes as we get older the as the run away number one health issue they deal with daily..

So where does that leave golf in the bucket list for kids ??  Near the bottom I'd say..and remember the immigrant population that is pouring into this country is from the middle east, India, Pakistan, hardly golfing hotbeds..

Somehow Golf Canada and the NAGA needs to find a way to get affordable exciting golf to the masses of children..

Either provincial or federal or privately owned land has to be "donated "... Nine holes, limited bunkers, flat, big greens, no charge, rental clubs available, young CPGA pros on staff required to provide 10 free lessons to each kid..Internet stations with fun golf related programs and whatever other social media programs that are essential for kids available so it becomes a "happening" (sorry) place to go..

Tough road ahead I'd say, but worth walking.. the future of the game in Canada may hinge on it..

Golf Canada
The National Allied Golf Associations (NAGA) have released a Canadian Golf Consumer Behaviour Study aimed at helping the Canadian golf industry to better understand the current state of golf in Canada as well as factors that influence the behaviour of consumers as they relate to golf.

The purpose of conducting the Canadian Golf Consumer Behaviour Study was to gather insights and intelligence that can enable the National Allied Golf Associations (comprised of the National Golf Course Owners Association Canada, the PGA of Canada, the Canadian Society of Club Managers, the Canadian Golf Industry Association, the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association and Golf Canada) as well as the Canadian golf industry to better understand consumer behaviour characteristics in Canadian golf; uncover actions which offer an opportunity to sustain the game in Canada; and improve on factors that impact consumer behaviour as it relates to golf in Canada.

As a resource document, the Canadian Golf Consumer Behaviour Study provides a measure of research related to the Canadian golf industry which is rooted in statistical-based facts. The ultimate goal of the study is to provide statistical and predictive insight that can serve as a learning resource for the Canadian golf industry as it works to better understand factors that have a positive and negative impact on Canadian golf consumer behaviour.

As an industry, we believe it is critical to have an understanding of our golf consumers and the factors that impact their behaviour characteristics,” said Ken Cousineau, Executive Director of the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association and Chair of NAGA. “Collectively as NAGA partners and as individual associations, the study brings forth insightful intelligence that could aid the industry’s efforts to reinforce positive consumer behaviour and work to change negative behaviour. As industry leaders, the study helps us to understand why consumers make the choices they make.”
The Canadian Golf Consumer Behaviour Study was conducted on behalf of NAGA by NAVICOM, a scientific firm which specializes in delivering intelligence that focuses specifically on deciphering choice.

The purpose of statistics is to be able to draw inferences about a population from a sample with a measure of goodness – reliability, credibility and usability – attached to those inferences,” said John Pulley, President of NAVICOM. “In order to impact the ‘who, what, where, when and how’ related to consumer behaviour, one needs to understand the ‘why’. Golf consumers have many choices when it comes to their level of engagement with the sport. Knowing what segments exist and how the people in those segments make choices enables the industry to get out in front of the change curve and develop strategies aimed at impacting consumer behaviour.”

Golf.. The Final.. McIlroy ' the boy wonder"...Final Scoreboards

Sunday evening as a pulsating day in sports winds down.. The Jays sweep the Bostons right in Fenway Park, the NFL and CFL have stories galore as does soccer around the globe including the EPL...those and so much more

PGA Tour

Rory McIlroy fine-tuned his swing and missed only one fairway at soggy Crooked Stick, powering his way to a 5-under 67 to win his second straight FedExCup Playoffs event. They followed a record win at the PGA Championship, giving him three wins in his last four starts to establish himself as the dominant player in golf. He faced the strongest collection of contenders at any golf tournament this year and it was no contest.

He became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2009 to win in consecutive weeks on the PGA TOUR, and with his sixth career tour win, he joined Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win that many at age 23.

I don't think I'm quite there yet," McIlroy said. "But I'm getting to that stage where I'm thinking, `This is what I should be doing. I should be lifting a trophy at the end of the week.' It's been great. The last four, five weeks have been incredible, some of the best golf that I've ever played. I'm going to try and keep the run going for as long as possible."

McIlroy finished on 20-under 268 and earned $1.44 million, pushing him to over $7.8 million for the season to effectively lock up the money title and all but assured being voted by his peers as the PGA TOUR Player of the Year.
He has four wins on TOUR this year -- one more than Woods -- and that includes a record eight-shot win at the PGA Championship.

He is the No. 1 seed going into the FedExCup finale in two weeks at East Lake, but any of the top five seeds can win the TOUR Championship and capture the FedExCup with its $10 million bonus. The other four seeds are Woods, Nick Watney, Mickelson and Brandt Snedeker

Woods was never seriously in the mix. Five shots behind with seven holes to play, he made three late birdies and shot 68 to tie for fourth with Robert Garrigus (69).

Rory's Ryder Cup colleague Lee Westwood 69 and Phil Mickelson were 2 shots back at -16...

Graham DeLaet  T35 at 283 ,  64 70 74 75 -5 finished at 53  David Hearn is T65 292, 69 70 77 76 +4 and finished at 68 so both are done as far as the playoffs are concerned..

Remember only the top 30 go through to the Tour Championship at East Lake in 2 weeks..

Hanson’s heroics seals KLM Open

Peter Hanson ended a difficult personal week on a dramatic high note after holing a 30ft eagle putt on the last hole to win the KLM Open in his last tournament before The Ryder Cup.

The Swede came close to withdrawing from the event at Hilversumsche GC after his one year old son Tim was hospitalised with a respiratory virus on Friday.

But with his son’s condition improving, his decision to continue paid off as he secured a fifth European Tour title with a stunning climax, closing with a 67 to finish on 14 under par,  two shots clear of long-time leader Pablo LarrazĆ”bal and last week’s Omega European Masters champion Richie Ramsay.

European Senior Tour

INVALUABLE PRICE SECURES DOMINANT PON SENIOR OPEN VICTORY

Terry Price completed the most dominant victory of the 2012 European Senior Tour season with a final round of five under par 67 to record a stunning six-shot win over Marc Farry and Barry Lane at Winston Golf.

The Australian was simply unstoppable during the final round over the Winston Open course as he secured the first Senior Tour victory of his career and the first place cheque for €60,000.

With some of the Senior Tour’s biggest names – among them Lane and Bernhard Langer – starting their own final rounds with a bang, Price could have been forgiven for taking it easy and feeling his way into the final round, which he had begun with a three-stroke cushion.

But the 51 year old went on the attack from the word go, birdieing two of his first three holes to keep plenty of daylight between himself and the chasing pack

European Challenge Tour

Kaleka clinches second title in Russia

Alexandre Kaleka claimed his second European Challenge Tour title as his two under par round of 70 was enough to overcome Alessandro Tadini after a thrilling battle in the final day of the M2M Russian Challenge Cup.

The Frenchman began the day two shots off the lead held by Alessandro Tadini and, on an intriguing day where the lead was exchanged back and forth, he battled his way back from a double bogey at the 15th hole to claim his first title in three years.

The win moved him from 12th in the Challenge Tour Rankings to fifth and means he is now almost certain to earn a card for The European Tour next season.

Kaleka put the pressure on Tadini early on with birdies at the fourth and seventh holes, which him to the turn in two under par, but Tadini didn’t look like budging and also played the front nine in two under par to maintain his lead.

It all began to unravel for the Italian, however, and back to back bogeys at the 11th and 12th holes followed by another at the 14th put Kaleka into the lead.

New putter, playoff beard. DeLaet leads BMW Championship

Graham DeLaet and David Hearn are paired together right behind the juggernaut group of Tiger, Rory and the throw in Nick Watney...

As good Canadian guys do during the playoffs they showed up on the first tee with their playoff beards well underway and I'm not so sure it was the beards as much as it was the new $150.00 long putter Graham bought from the pro shop bin in Boise.

He used it to great effect in particular with a 40 foot eagle bomb on his final hole (9th) on his way to an -8 64, tied for the lead with Rory McIlroy, BoVan Pelt and Webb Simpson..

Hearn had a -3 69 and is T29 on a day when 60 of the 70 players were below par as the field was allowed to lift clean and place after torrential rain on Wednesday..

pgatour.com..
McIlroy, flawless with his irons, birdied his last two holes for an 8-under 64 and was part of a four-way tie for the lead with Indiana native Bo Van Pelt, U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and Graham DeLaet, the Canadian who is quietly becoming the Cinderella of these FedExCup Playoffs.
Just three days after McIlroy won the Deutsche Bank Championship, he looked just as impressive in the opening round at Crooked Stick.
"He hits it great, putts it great and top of that, he's just a really nice kid," Woods said in some of his strongest praise ever for another player. "The game of golf is in great hands with him, and he's here to stay."
Woods, who finished two shots behind Monday in Boston, isn't going away quietly. He was only sharp when it came to scoring, making enough birdies to stay in the game, including a 30-foot chip-in on his last hole for a 65

Rory the story of the Fed Ex Cup

click here for final scoreboard  http://www.pgatour.com/r/leaderboard/#

Rory beat Louis by a shot, Tiger by 2 as he moves into 1st place in the Fed Ex Cup with 2 events to play.

pgatour.com   On a leaderboard packed with some of the biggest names in golf -- McIlroy, Oosthuizen, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson -- the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland took a giant leap toward establishing himself as the best in the game.

With four birdies in six holes at the start, and limiting the damage from his mistakes at the end, McIlroy closed with a 4-under 67 for a one-shot victory over Oosthuizen, joining Woods as the only three-time winners this year on the PGA TOUR

McIlroy goes to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup. And with one of his wins being the PGA Championship, that might be enough for his peers to vote him PGA TOUR Player of the Year. He also has a comfortable gap in the Official World Gold Ranking, and could be tough to catch the rest of the year unless Woods were to win the next two FedExCup events..

Phil Mickelson also had a 66 and tied for fourth, along with Dustin Johnson, who had a 70 and likely played his way onto the Ryder Cup team. Brandt Snedeker made a strong case for a captain's pick with a 65-67 weekend to finish sixth.  Davis Love III will announce his four picks Tuesday morning in New York

Both David Hearn 75 -5 total T26, 58th place and Graham DeLaet MC but in 60th place move on to round 3 where the top 70 compete at Crooked Stick in Alabama...

Rory is getting in great shape to win the Fed Ex and Race To Dubai not to mention his leading role in the European Team at the Ryder Cup... Tiger of course will continue to get all the headlines, no matter how sensational Rory's year will be..  Sad but true..

Weekend warriors at St Joseph's hospital, European Tour results

Monday morning of this beautiful Labour Day weekend weather wise. It has really been a fitting send off to summer down by the Toronto lakeshore capped by a magnificent airshow with a clear blue sky and Lake Ontario as the backdrop.

I am heading out to get a workout in then back over for day 3 at St Jo's tending to Dad who is slowly getting better, steadier it seems.

All the full time hospital staff return from their holiday's Tuesday, boy if it wasn't for my sisters and I being there 24/7 this weekend, God only knows what state he would be in and I must say the skeleton crew that are working do the best they can, but are simply overwhelmed when a crisis occurs as it does daily, especially in Dad's wing where Dementia sets in at sundown every day. Old folks just keep ringing that bell non-stop calling for help for the most trivial of matters to the most serious..

It is a thankless job and I hope some re-enforcements arrive today as the breaking point isn't far below the surface, or worse as I observe, they just switch off, stop caring, put in their hours and get out. Some of these women, and most are women take 2 hours by bus to get in by 7am and 2 hours to get home after working 12 hour shifts. Up at 4am, on the buses at 5, into work and on the floor at 7am, off at 7pm, back on the buses, home by 9... No time for anything, bed by 10 and back up at 4 !!  All for what I assume is a paltry wage

I am embarrassed I held any ill will towards their lack of care for my Dad, it is the system, not them. They are superwomen to carry on this grind for their existence and their families day in a day out.

The doctors and nurses and specialists are away up the food chain from these weekend warriors at St Jo's..

Here are a couple of European Tour results I received last night and will post for you.

EUROPEAN TOUR

Rampant Ramsay king for the day in Crans

Richie Ramsay cruised to his second European Tour title at the Omega European Masters with a display as stunning as the scenery in the Swiss Alps.

The former US Amateur Champion, who opened his European Tour account at the 2010 South African Open Championship, earned €350,000 to climb to into the top 20 of The Race to Dubai after romping to a four shot victory at Crans-sur-Sierre.

Ramsay started the day with a one shot lead over his compatriot Paul Lawrie and England’s Danny Willett, but that advantage was swiftly wiped out when Lawrie eagled the first hole.

But Ramsay responded with a birdie of his own, and made four further gains to race to the turn in just 31 strokes.

A brief wobble on the 13th hole was swiftly rectified when he holed his wedge for an eagle at the next, allowing the man from Aberdeen ample breathing space, and he eventually signed for a round of 66 for a 16 under par aggregate winning total.

He said: “Since winning in South Africa I’ve made a lot of tough decisions about my career, and today was vindication of that. It’s an incredible place to play golf, so to win here is very special. You can get caught up looking at the scenery, but I knew I had a job to do here today.
“I had a clear goal in mind, and all the way round I was imagining I was playing with my best mates from back home. I performed unbelievably well against two of the most in-form players about. Paul’s playing the golf of his life, and Danny’s one of the best young players on the Tour. So it was always going to be difficult, but I managed to pull it off.”

Second place was shared on 12 under par by Sweden’s Fredrik Andersson Hed, Australian Marcus Fraser, Frenchman Romain Wattel (all 66) and Willett (69).

EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR

Smyth seals superb Woburn win

Irishman Des Smyth won his second Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters title in three years with a superb four under par 68 in the final round at Woburn Golf Club.

The 59 year old from Drogheda, who triumphed here in 2010, finished with a ten under par total in front of record crowds, one shot clear of Australian Peter Fowler and two in front of Englishman Mark James, the pair both signing for 67.

Smyth spend much of the day level at the top with Spaniard Juan Quiros, but the 11th hole proved pivotal, with the Irishman birdieing and the Spaniard bogeying to open up a two shot gap, and Quiros ultimately had to settle for a 73 and a share of fifth place.

BRAD FRITSCH

Congrats to Brad on his second place finish on the Web.Com tour at the Mylan Classic..

In perspective...

I am spending Saturday and Sunday of this gorgeous Labour Day weekend in a hospital room at St Joseph's taking shifts along with my sisters Kathryn and Alison standing watch over our 92 yr old Dad, Bill who took a fall on Thursday afternoon and really beat himself up..had a mild heart attack

He is black and blue, and much more.. Dementia is always lurking, especially when the sun goes down making him a tough old guy to deal with for the skeleton crew the hospital has on offer as most are on holiday as the summer of 2012 winds down..These days folks, hospitals simply rely on family being present constantly to care for the elderly.. Like life, if you get lucky and get one who really cares about nursing it's a bonus.. Most just get on with their shifts hoping for as little crisis as possible. There are precious few actual nurses, mostly all administraters, maintenance or care givers who are from all over the world, speaking in many tongues, working 12 hour shifts, away down the pecking order from all the glamour you see with the doctors and nurses on ER... Dad had one hurried visit from a doctor ALL day yesterday, I never saw the nurse on duty, and the so called shift supervisor really only came in to see me when I had lodged a complaint with a doctor who actually went to the hospital manager, over her head, and she was forced to file an incident report to explain a case of extreme incompetence, worse, lack of caring..

Minutes, hours, days crawl by at an excrutiatingly slow pace.no TV no radio,.there is a hospital routine, barely functioning over this Labour Day weekend.. All is on hold til the full timers, the Doc's, nurses, physio's, social workers, specialists arrive back to work on Tuesday and plug back in to the grind, eventually getting around to our dear old Dad, so they can sign off on him, cover the hospital's ass and eventually wheel him to the door, back to us until he falls again.. God forbid...

The Air Show at the Ex is spectacular just minutes down the Lakeshore from St Jo's and rages away overhead, the Jays lost on the last play of the game 5-4 to the Rays further along at the Skydome (Rogers Center now), Dad would enjoy them both if he had a clue they were on...

I read Rory leads by a shot from Louis O with Tiger another back.... sorry I can't tell you more..

It doesn't really seem to matter this weekend as we try and get Dad home and wonder how we will be able to manage him so he continues to live with dignity and pleasure in his dotage..

It's 430am, time to get on with the morning chores and routine before driving back to spell my sister in Dad's room.. For this weekend at least you probably know more about what's going on in the golf world than I do..

When  I look at Dad it really doesn't seem to matter... It puts it all in perspective..

What a year for Chip Lutz...Final scores Canadian Men's Senior Championship

American Chip Lutz won the Canadian Men's Senior Championship on Friday in Mirabel Quebec, successfully defending his title..

Earlier this year Lutz claimed his second consecutive British Seniors Open Amateur Championship title and also captured a Silver Medal as top amateur at the 2012 British Senior Open Championship

Here is a complete report from Golf Canada

CHIP LUTZ WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE CANADIAN MEN’S SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

- Pennsylvania native earns exemption into 2012 USGA Senior Amateur Championship -

Mirabel, Que. (Golf Canada) – Chip Lutz of Reading, Penn. carded a final-round 4-under par 68 on Friday to capture the 2012 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship at Golf Griffon des Sources in Mirabel, Que.

Lutz, who started the day two shots back of leader Ian Harris of Bloomfield, Mich., birdied four of his last five holes, en route to besting Harris by five strokes for the title. Lutz finished with a four-day tally of 1-under par 287, while Harris posted a score of 4-over par 292 to place second.

Lutz’s final-round score of 4-under par 68 matched a competitive course record that was set earlier in the day by four-time Canadian Men’s Senior Championship winner, Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. Cooke finished third with a four-day tally of 7-over par 295.

“It's just tremendous for me to accomplish this,” said Lutz, who earlier this year claimed his second consecutive British Seniors Open Amateur Championship title and also captured a Silver Medal as top amateur at the 2012 British Senior Open Championship. “I was successful in defending the British earlier this year, and to do it in Canada and back this one up is something special. I'm thrilled beyond words.”

Reflecting on a stellar final round, Lutz was particularly proud of the manner in which he was able to adhere to his game plan.

“Today, it finally came together on the final nine holes,” said Lutz, who earned a champion’s exemption into the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur Championship with the win. “I tried to stay patient and stay with my game plan and I tried to remain close in terms of the competition coming down the stretch. I felt if I was able to do that, then I may have some good fortune. That was the key.”

With the victory, Lutz became the first competitor to capture back-to-back Canadian Men’s Senior Championship titles since Cooke accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009.

Greg Wilson of Vaudreuil, Que. was fourth at 8-over par 296, while David Schultz of Calgary and Frank Van Dornick of Camrose, Alta. finished T5 at 10-over par 298
