I am old enough to have watched the legendary Sam Snead playing and winning on the PGA Tour when he was 52. His silky swing was still intact, he could still kick his height, but he was forced at times to putt side saddle to combat the yips.
Today at the Honda Classic, Vijay Singh could obliterate Sam's record. At 56, he fired a -5 65 -6 total to surge up the leaderboard into a group just a shot behind the leader, a rookie called Wyndham Clark (67 -7).
The wind and the tough PGA National course with the legendary Bear Trap finish surrounded by water has put a premium on birdies. As a result there are 27 players within 5 shots of the lead including Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia and Brooks Koepka.
Also in that group are 3 Canadians all T19 at -2. Roger Sloan, Adam Svensson and Nick Taylor.
Ben Silverman has slipped to T64 +2 and Drew Nesbitt MDF at +9.
