Poland's Adrian Meronk makes history, leads Alfred Dunhill Championship. Cockerill misses cut.. live scoreboard

Adrian Meronk

Adrian Meronk continued to make European Tour history as he opened up a three shot lead heading into the weekend at the 2020 Alfred Dunhill Championship

The 27-year-old became the first Polish player to share the lead at a European Tour event after his first round 65 and when he followed it with a 66 on day two at Leopard Creek Country Club, he was the first Pole to hold a solo lead.

Meronk is becoming a true trailblazer for the game in his homeland, having already become the first Polish player to hold full European Tour playing privileges when he graduated from the European Challenge Tour last term, winning the 57° Open de Portugal @ Morgado Golf Resort en route.

He may have just 28 European Tour events and two top tens under his belt so far, but he looked every inch the seasoned veteran in Malelane, moving to 13 under to sit ahead of England's Richard Bland and Dane Joachim B. Hansen.

Frenchman Robin Roussel and home favourite Jayden Schaper were then at eight under, a shot clear of Spaniard Adri Arnaus, South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Scotland's Scott Jamieson.

Canadian Aaron Cockerill missed the cut 76 73 +5. Leaderboard

European / PGA Tours announce a Strategic Alliance

The European Tour and PGA TOUR today heralded a significant new era for global golf with an historic announcement of a Strategic Alliance.

The landmark agreement will see golf’s two major Tours explore all facets of collaboration, working together on strategic commercial opportunities including collaborating on global media rights in certain territories.

This will come through part of the agreement which sees the PGA TOUR acquire a minority investment stake in European Tour Productions (ETP), the European Tour’s Media Production company, which produces and distributes content internationally.

The Tours will also work in partnership on a number of other areas including global scheduling, prize funds and playing opportunities for the respective memberships. Further details of these areas will be announced in due course.

One element of the partnership which can be confirmed today is the fact that PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan will take a seat on the Board of the European Tour.

Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour, said: “This partnership is an historic moment for the game of golf and is a fantastic opportunity for both the European Tour and the PGA TOUR to explore ways to come together at the very pinnacle of our sport and work in unison for the benefit of the men’s professional game.

“Today’s announcement is the formalisation of a closer working relationship between the Tours in recent years. It was one which was crystalised earlier this year when both Jay and I were part of the working group containing representatives of the four Majors and the LPGA, a group which helped shape the remainder of the golfing calendar for 2020 during unprecedented times.

“We shared the challenges of working through a year neither of us could have ever imagined and we found definite synergies in many areas of our respective Tours. That gave us the impetus to move forward together and arrive at this momentous announcement we are making today.”

Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the PGA TOUR, said, “We are thrilled to announce this further strengthening of our partnership with the European Tour, and we look forward to working together for the benefit of the men’s professional game and for golf fans around the world.

Solid weekend for Cockerill, Connors and Henderson.... final scoreboards.... shovelling snow !!

After Mother Nature caught many of us, including me with our pants down on Sunday in the GTA, 20cm here, I have to hustle out to clean up the big mess this morning. I was mulching leaves on Friday, snow blower still under wraps, with a mostly rain forecast for Sunday.

Wrong !!

Anyhow I wrote about Aaron Cockerill's T4 at the JoBurg Open yesterday, well done. He has moved up from #481 to #391

Aaron Cockerill finishes T4 at the JoBurg Open... final scoreboard

 Joburg Open final scoreboard here

(pga file photo)

Aaron Cockerill wound up a very good first week on the South Africa swing with a -3 68 -13 total, good enough to T4 behind the eventual winner from Denmark, Joachim Hansen at -19 who won his first European Tour event.

Aaron began the week with a 64 on Thursday and he stayed amongst the leaders all week with a 68 and 71. He drove the ball better today than Saturday, his iron play is sharp and he made a lot of putts within 6 feet when he needed to. He only made one bogey at the 2nd, then had 4 birdies and all the rest pars the rest of the way.

He seems in great spirits with his fiancé Chelsea as his caddie, and he will move well up the world rankings from 481 as well as the Race to Dubai standings with this performance on top of his T4 in Cyprus.

Next week it's the Alfred Dunhill Championship at stunning Leopard Creek CC, a 4 hour drive from Johannesburg.

Saturday night wrap.. Live scoreboards.. Canadian stories..

Well we're being shutdown here in Toronto as of midnight tomorrow, the panic buying was in full force today, meanwhile for the pro golfers of the world who don't have to stand in line at Costco here's a summary of play today, except for Aaron Cockerill at the Joburg Open which I posted this morning.

LPGA Pelican Women's Championship leaderboard  here

South Korean Sei Young Kim 67 65 64 -14 is running away with the inaugural Pelican Women's Open,  5 shots clear heading into Sunday.

Brooke Henderson made a move 68 70 66 -6 T5 and will play with Lydia Ko and Austin Ernst at 11.04am on Sunday.

Alena Sharp is T19 68 71 71 E is off at 10.09 with In Gee Chun and American Megan Kang

PGA Tour RSM Classic Leaderboard  here

Once again Corey Connors  from Listowel, Ontario leads a sad showing by the Canadians into Sunday at the RSM Classic hard by the Atlantic Ocean in Georgia..

At 67 70 66 -9 he is T14..Roger Sloan is 67 69 71 -5 T41

How many know who Robert Strep is ? He's 33 from Oklahoma and is ranked 380th in the world with 1 career win, the 2015 McGladrey Classic but still has made nearly $10m on the PGA Tour.

Gritty Canadian, Cockerill 7th at JoBurg Open .. live scoreboard

 JoBurg Open Saturday leaderboard here

On an overcast rainy Saturday at the JoBurg Open the Randpark GC was playing long despite the calm conditions.

While it was wet, it was warm compared to -8 in Winnipeg, near home to Aaron Cockerill. I just finished watching his 3rd round, and he was amongst the leaders all day, despite losing a little ground with two late bogey's.

The leader is 20 year old South African Wilco Nienaber who hits the ball every inch as far as Bryson DeChambeau without all the histionics, certainly none of the weights and shakes.

His -4 67 -16 total is a shot ahead of Denmark's Joachim Hansen  -7 64 -15.

Aaron was unlucky not to get more from his round, he putted beautifully, several long lags left him the easiest of tap ins, and when he got a case of the "rights" off the tee late in his round he scrambled very well from the trees.

He was out in a bogey free -2 33, but bogey's at 10, 16, 17 with a birdie at the par 5 14th, that hung on the lip for an eagle, had him home in 38 for E 71 and 7th at -10. There are 4 players tied at -11 just a shot ahead of him and he does play the front nine well with 30 and 31 in rounds 1 and 2.

All attention will likely be on Nienaber and Joachim in the final pairing, both looking for their first European Tour wins, so a great chance for Cockerill to sort out his driver and hope some of those putts fall to post a good score in the clubhouse and see what happens.

 Pelican Women's Championship leaderboard  here

Alena Sharp and Brooke Henderson are off to a great start, -2 68 T5 four shots off the lead in Belleair, Florida at this inaugural Pelican Women's Championship.

Alena had 4 birdies, 2 bogey's and Brooke had 3 birdies, one bogey all on her front nine, all pars coming in.

Alena is off at 12.32pm today, while Brooke and newly married sister Brittany are up early at 7.43am both off the 10th tee.

Sophia Popov is the best of the field after the first round with her -6 64, two shots clear.

Aaron Cockerill shares the clubhouse lead after 36 holes at the JoBurg Open.. live leaderboard

 JoBurg Open leaderboard Leaderboard

Aaron Cockerill is making the most of his European Tour adventure. After three weeks in the sun and sea of Cyprus, he and his fiancé/caddie have flown down to Johannesburg in South Africa trying to get into the top 60 of the Race to Dubai, and so far so good after two rounds of 64 68 -10 he has the clubhouse the lead at the JoBurg Open heading into the weekend.

Thursday's 64 featured 7 birdies with no bogey's, and this morning he added 5 more with nines of 31,37 on the Randpark GC.

His passport shows stops in Ireland, Scotland, Italy where he placed T22, then Cyprus where he T14 the first week. They plan on playing the Alfred Dunhill Championship at spectacular Leopard Creek adjacent to Kruger National Park next week, then a new Golf In Dubai Championship and perhaps the South African Open before they fly home to Winnipeg for Christmas.

He is currently ranked #481 in the world.

The late wave of round two are currently on course.

Fifteen athletes will compete on Team Canada’s National Amateur Squad, consisting of eight players on the men’s squad and seven on the women’s squad.

The announcement marks a significant increase in roster size, adding six athletes to the previous year’s team. The roster expansion is due in large part to a restructuring of team resources in addition to increased funding support from the Golf Canada Foundation’s network of Trustee partners.

From March through early June, the Junior Squad will practice out of Golf Canada’s National Training Centre at Bear Mountain—the fourth year that the program has provided centralized training, accommodation and education for athletes during the second semester of their school year. Team members will be immersed in a focused centre of excellence, surrounded by world-class technical coaching staff and experts in the areas of mental performance, physiotherapy, biomechanics and nutrition.

Team Canada Coaching Staff Announced

Golf Canada is pleased to announce the 2021 Team Canada coaching staff that will support both the National Amateur and Junior Squads.

For the amateur squads, Derek Ingram of Winnipeg returns as men’s head coach with support from assistant coach Andrew Parr of London, Ont. On the women’s side, Tristan Mullally of Dundas, Ont., returns as head coach.

On the junior side, Robert Ratcliffe of Comox, B.C., will lead the centralized Junior Squads at the National Training Centre in Bear Mountain for the fourth year. He will receive support from newly named coach Jennifer Greggain, also of Comox, B.C.

Players will have access to Team Canada’s sport science staff, which includes physiotherapist Greg Redman and Psychologist Dr. Adrienne Leslie-Toogood supporting the men’s team with physiotherapist Andrea Kosa and mental performance consultant Christie Gialloreto supporting the women. The Junior Squads will continue to receive sport science support from the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific in the areas of strength & conditioning, physiotherapy, mental performance and nutrition.

“Team Canada has shown tremendous success and the coaching staff is well-positioned to lead the increased roster of athletes along with the centralized training program at Bear Mountain,” said Laurence Applebaum, Golf Canada Chief Executive Officer. “Along with every area of the business, we will continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 to ensure the health and well-being of the athletes and coaches. We now look ahead to helping shape the bright futures of Canada’s top up-and-coming athletes looking to follow in the footsteps of graduates such as Brooke Henderson, Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes.”

Mullally, Ingram, Ratcliffe, Greggain and Parr are all PGA of Canada members.

Golf Canada will announce the selection of the 2021 Team Canada Young Pro Squad in January.

Henderson back in action at Pelican Women's Championship.. Live scoreboard

 Pelican Women's Championship leaderboard  here

Brooke Henderson returns to play this week at the inaugural Pelican Women's Championship in Belleair, Florida. Belleair is a nice little residential community north of St Petersburg and south of Clearwater on the Gulf Coast. it's population of 4000 has a large seniors sector.

The LPGA season has 3 events after this week including the US Open Dec 10th-13th then the CME Group Tour Championship Dec 17-20.

In this strange COVID season Brooke seems to have spent more time at her Florida home in Miromar Lakes than she has on tour, in fact the world #1 player on the LPGA tour Jin Young Ko has been home in South Korea all year and is making her 2020 debut this week.

She plays at 11.59am with Lydia Ko and Japan's Nasa Hataoka.

Alena Sharp played early and is T2 -2 late in her round.

It's a typically strong field as many are chasing CME Globe points, and prepare for the US Open in two weeks.

Round one is under way and you can follow all the action by clicking on my link above.

84th Masters, The good, the bad, the ugly...final results

 84th Masters final scoreboard here

There were many moments this week watching this 84th Masters from my humble abode, many good, some bad, and finally some ugly.

For a complete wrap click on my link above for every shot, every score and every story at masters.com.

The Good

* When Dustin Johnson is on form, nobody can beat him now, unlike a few years ago when he didn't always get all four rounds together (eg.see 2015 US Open). His game was on full display driving it miles and under control, perhaps the current game's best long iron player ( eg. see his 245yd 3 iron around the corner over the bunker to 3 feet 2nd hole par 5), vastly improved short game, and an excellent putter from any range. Result,? record breaking 20 under par, and his spot at the Masters dinner table for the rest of his life.

* Most fans have never been to Augusta, and the ONLY good thing about no crowds this time around, we all got the full picture of how hilly it is, we really saw the entire complex, got a terrific view of all the chips and pitches around the greens, and a better appreciation of what a legendary test of the game it is with those gorgeous, treacherous carpets they putt on.

* Canadians were much of my focus. Pity that Adam Hadwin missed out by a shot on making the eventual cut and while Mike Weir, Nick Taylor and Corey Connors were never going to win, it was a huge week for all of them.

Weirsy with his renewed confidence from a stint on the Senior circuit had his short game on full display all week, particularly on Saturday morning with 4 holes left over to make the cut. He was playing his hybrids to the 6 irons of the bombers to several of the par 4's, and just ran out of gas a little in his closing 76.

Nick Taylor played -3 better than par for 4 rounds in his first Masters which will send him forward full of confidence at the RSM Classic this week.

Corey Connors finished T10 -9, $287,500 and a place back at the Masters in the spring. He struggles at times with the putter but this week he was firing on all cylinders especially round two, -7 65, a Canadian record.

* Cameron Smith the young Aussie had the week of his life T2 with South Korean Sungjae Im who both had their respective countries up late watching. Im is a superstar in the making, and Smith provided the two shots of the tournament on Sunday. By the way he hits it left handed almost as well as right..

* Bernhard Langer at 63 beating Bryson DeChambeau by a shot over four rounds

The Bad

* The wet weather Tues/ Wed/Thurs softened up the course until it dried out Saturday afternoon and Sunday which lessened the stern test we've come to expect, and in fact was a big part of DJ's record score.

* We don't get the best TV commentators on CBS, they are working for BBC or Sky Sports these days with Peter Alliss and Ken Brown among others. While Trevor Immelman was very articulate for CBS, informative and entertaining from his perch, four days of Jim Nantz and his syrup are tough, and while Nick Faldo had a hard working well earned Hall of Fame career, we simply can't continue to listen to him prattle away while watching TV. Get him out of his suit, into his golf shoes back out on the course where he belongs. Ken Brown owns that job on Sky Sports and brings us face to face insight on every shot he covers that is priceless.

* No patrons. While I mentioned earlier it gave us all a great insight and views of the course. there were no roars on Sunday afternoon, just DJ quietly going about winning the tournament, especially once he got past #12.

* Butler Cabin. I know it's sacrilegious to say, but it has served it's time, is painfully out of touch with the rest of the world watching

The Ugly

* The ugly, is the reason there are no spectators at Augusta, or anywhere else.

The USA is supposed to be a world leader. The cavalier self serving handling of COVID by some of their so called leaders, not to mention the former President has been shameless and the virus is simply running amok as a result.

* Paulina Gretzky. I wrote yesterday about the tremendous effect Wayne, and Janet Gretzky have had in influencing the growing up of Dustin Johnson, and their daughter, both of whom had been living the spoiled life of the rich and famous, before becoming a couple in 2013.

Why Paulina, who I'm sure loves her husband and their two boys to death spent her week walking around Augusta with it's strictest of strict guidelines, dressed like she was in an adult spin class is beyond me. Surely Janet who has bared it all in her early years as a playboy pin up, but grew up to be the respected partner her husband deserves, could have helped her daughter with something appropriate to wear to match her husbands stunning achievement.

Foggy start to round 4 at the Masters, will DJ hold on? Canadian story.. live scoreboard

Sunday scoreboard at 84th Masters.. tee times/ live scoring here

With the weather warming up from a cool Saturday, the fog rolled in before sunrise today, and has delayed the Sunday start by 15 minutes.

As you know by know, Dustin Johnson has that 4 shot lead and is playing "in complete control" of his game with rounds of 65 70 65 -16.

The field has been split, paired again in 3's off the 1st and 10th tees, with the leaders off the first at 9.39 EST. Johnson, Mexican Abraham Ancer 69 67 69 -12 and Korean Sungjae Im 66 70 68 -12. They are both in their first Masters.

Canadian Story/ tee times:

Corey Connors finished off his Canadian record -7 65 early on Saturday then "buoyed with confidence that I can score around here" he set out for round 3, where he was -3 on the 17th tee, but made bogey's there and on 18 to finish with 71 and a -6 total.

Today he plays with American Cameron Champ and England's Paul Casey off #1 at 8.44am.

Nick Taylor in his first Masters played with Mike Weir on Saturday after qualifying on the number E 72 72. He played well with 7 birdies, 2 bogeys and was well on his way to 67 before driving into the trees at 18, chipping out into the fairway bunker and ending up with double bogey 6 for a -3 69.

Today he plays with South African Louis Oosthuizen and England's Justin Rose off #10 and they have just begun.

Mike Weir battled as always on his final 4 holes of round 2 early on Saturday morning and made the cut at -1. In round 3 he played the back nine first, 3 birdies, 2 bogey's for 35, then stalled a bit coming in, with 3 birdies and 3 bogey's, 36 and a 71 total.

Today he begins at -2 playing the back nine first with Ian Poulter and American amateur Andy Ogeltree.

Johnson's mentor Wayne Gretzky, Sunday at the Masters.. live scoring

Sunday Masters scoreboard here

In August of 2014, Dustin Johnson, DJ as he is known took what he called a 6 month leave of absence from the PGA Tour for " personal reasons", allegedly a 3rd positive test for cocaine, headlines in the notorious scandal papers in the UK called him "Golf's bad boy".

The big guy from Myrtle Beach certainly drank too much, smoked weed, did cocaine while in his own words "took some time to grow up".

Go back to 2009 when Janet Gretzky invited him into their house where he quickly became friends with her, Wayne and their sons. Pauline first met him there. I believe that was a crucial albeit casual invitation.

In 2013 at the Tournament of Champions, Pauline, now unattached and making sexy headlines of her own, was seen in Hawaii in his company, some time after they announced they were engaged, and they have been ever since. He is the father of their 2 boys, River and Tatum, and importantly he is the proud son-in-law of Wayne Gretzky.

No athlete in Canada was/is more beloved, respected than the Great One, nobody with that adulation is more humble, nor on an even keel. When he met and eventually married Janet, she had been a Playboy Pin Up girl, beautiful, sexy, just like her daughter Pauline.

The comparison between the 2 couples has similarities and it's for sure Wayne has been influential in both his daughter and Dustin's growing up, getting a grip on the reality of leading a responsible, parental life, and how to handle your immense talent, your fame and fortune, the media and those less fortunate around you.

Today DJ has a 4 shot lead on Sunday at the Masters, playing great golf with that calm, quiet demeanor which gives the impression that nothing bothers him.

He has blown leads on big events before, 2015 US Open perhaps most publicized but he also has this record coming into today. PGA Championship 2nd, Northern Trust 1st, BMW Championship 2nd, Tour Championship 1st, US Open 6th, Houston Open 2nd.

Anything can happen in golf, Martin Kaymer once blew a 9 shot lead, today it will get tighter than 4 shots, DJ probably will win, he may not.

Whatever transpires win or lose, he will quietly go about his life, surrounded by his family, as he says, "I try not to get too high when I win, or too low when I lose", and if he ever does, his father in law will be there as always.

Round 3 tee times, Weir ,Taylor paired together...

As I mentioned earlier Mike Weir and Nick Taylor are paired together with Sung Kang Group 14, 11.46am #10.

Corey Connors plays with Paul Casey, Scottie Scheffler are Group 7 10.53am #1.. Here are all the tee times.

84th Masters As Round 3 Tee Times

Connors, Weir, Taylor make cut.. Saturday morning at the Masters... live scoring

 84th Masters, live scoring here

With 48 players returning early this morning to complete their 2nd rounds on a very cool damp Saturday morning, it's all about making the cut, as much as taking the lead.

It fell at E  with 3 of the 4 Canadians making it. Top 50 and ties get in.

Corey Connors came out early with 2 holes to play, birdied the 8th and 9th with a long up hill 35 footer to post a brilliant -7 65, (8 birdies, 1 bogey) and he will begin his 3rd round T18 -5. He drove the ball with great length and accuracy, 13/14 fairways hit, and only used 1.5 putts per green. This was the low round of the day (s)

Nick Taylor has posted 72,72 E and will play on the weekend

Mike Weir is at E with 4 holes (6,7,8,9) to play, badly needing a birdie or two to make the cut. He made a great save at 180 yard par 3 6th, chipping to 6 feet from a pulled tee shot in the pine straw, then got up and down from the front bunker at the 7th with a delicate downhill curler. He then played a classic 3 shot par 5 8th and his birdie 4 moved him to -1. Finally at the par 4 dog leg left 9th, he hit a tremendous sliced approach from the left rough and 2 putted to shoot 72 for a -1 total to qualify for the weekend !

Adam Hadwin has posted 74 ,71 +1 so his Masters is over.

At the other end of the scoreboard there are 5 players T1 at -9 including Dustin Johnson (65,70) and Jon Rahm (69 66) and Justin Thomas (66 69) then another 4 in at -8. It is a jam packed board that includes Tiger and Phil.

Round 3 and the 60 players who made it will play off split tees in threesomes starting at 10.45am and the way it's shaping up with the greens firming up a little but completely benign conditions, scoring should be low again.

Round 1Masters resumes at 7.30am, Weather, Canadian story, live scoreboard

 Leader Board

Friday Weather : 21*C currently. high 25, light breeze, overcast, little chance of rain...

Thursday summary: After that 3 hour rain delay, Augusta National recovered beautifully, but was very soft for the early wave, the ball had little run on the sloping fairways, and approaches were sticking on the greens, ideal for scoring.

Paul Casey was the best of the bunch with his -7 65, 2 shots clear of Webb Simpson and Xander Schauffele in with -5 67's.

There were 5 -4 68's including Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods. Bryson DeChambeau bludgeoned his way to -2 70.

The main thing to remember is nearly half the field are about to go out and complete their opening rounds at 7.30am, so the current leaderboard will be finalized in about 2.5 hours. One group will begin on the 8th hole, all of the rest still have 9 holes at least to play.

Canadian Story : Nick Taylor is at -1 through 13 holes, he was E playing the back 9 first, and he made a birdie on #1. He begins on the 5th tee.

Mike Weir had a hard fought T34 -1 71 which in fact could easily been -4 68, with several putts including one for par at the 17th that dropped him to his knees, that either lipped out or sat right on the edge. The soft conditions left Weirsy playing long hybrids into some par 4's, but his wedge game and putter were in great form.

13 pars, 3 birdies and 2 bogey's, he leads the field in average putts per green in regulation with 1.67.

Corey Connors battled his way to +2 74. He was in the first group off and played one hole before play was halted with bad weather. 4 bogeys and 2 birdies for 38 on his front 9. A bogey at 11, but at the par 5 15th, he crushed a drive, than hit a towering 3 wood that stuck 8 feet from the pin, and converted the eagle 3. He pulled his drive into 18 and had to take an unplayable, resulting in a bogey 5, final +2 74.

9 pars, 6 bogey's, 2 birdies, 1 eagle but with the field averaging 1.68 putts per green in regulation, Corey is at 1.78.

Adam Hadwin was Mr. Par, with 14 of them, 3 bogey's and the 1 birdie. He was also at 1.78 putts per green in regulation with one 3 putt. He hit 11/14 fairways.

* Cut: Top 50 and ties proceed to the weekend.

* The early wave on Thursday become the late wave today, and with the late start due to round 1 being completed this morning, play likely will not get completed today in round 2.
