Casey 3 clear as Rory stumbles at Muirfield Village..

Richard "Dick" Grimm, the man responsible for bringing Jack in to design the Abbey, the man who was a giant in Canadian golf left us sadly, on Monday at the age of 91, was laid to rest yesterday after a touching ceremony at Temple Har Zion which I attended along with thousands of others touched by Dick's life. Jack Nicklaus could not attend due to obvious commitments this week, but he did pay tribute..

Here are live scoring links to all of this week's golf with all Canadian scores that owe so much so Mr Grimm, included.

Round 2
What a strange game golf is..on Thursday Rory McIlroy strolled around Memorial, making 135 feet of putts, striking the ball long and accurately on his way to an easy -9 63..Yesterday in the same ideal conditions, starting on the back nine he made 3 doubles in a row at 13, 14 and 15 including balls in the water and double hits ending up with a 43, then 78 finish, 15 shots worse and although he will be around for the weekend he is now at -3, 9 shots behind leader Paul Casey 66 66 -12, who is taking another step on a long road back from injuries to his shoulder and toe that nearly derailed his career. Casey also went through a messy divorce, but is now happily remarried to an English broadcaster and they are expecting their first child.

Bubba Watson is 3 shots back,Chris Kirk (70) was four shots behind. Hideki Matsuyama (67) and Martin Flores (68) were five back. Adam Scott, who won Colonial in his debut at No. 1 in the world, shot 70 and was at 5-under 139.

Monty, Scott, Rory, Korda all weekend winners !!

The Burma Road (West) course at Wentworth was the setting of the BMW Championship and this jewel, recently de-done by Ernie who lives there and won the former world March Play event 6 times, was the scene for so much drama, that helped shape my love of this great game.
Sunday was no different, starting as a runaway with Thomas Bjorn and his 5 shot lead, and the field in hot pursuit. With a back to back par 5 finish, it always seems to provide dramatic finishes, today was more of the same.

Round 4
Rory McIlroy  came from seven shots back at the start of the final round to shoot a 6-under 66 and win by 1 stroke with an overall 14-under 274 at Wentworth.
It was McIlroy’s first European Tour success since December 2012 and ends a run of eight second-place finishes in 11 events this season.
Shane Lowry of Ireland came second with a round of 68 for a 13-under 275. Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn (75) shared third place on 12 under with England’s two-time BMW PGA winner Luke Donald (70).
McIlroy’s 12th victory worldwide comes four days after the 25-year old Northern Irishman confirmed the breakdown in his relationship with Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki
Poor old Thomas Bjorn went into the last day with history on his side as no player had lost at this European Tour event after leading by five shots.
By the ninth hole Bjorn had forfeited his advantage, taking a bogey at No. 5, triple bogey at the sixth where he failed to get out of a greenside bunker in regulation, and dropping a further shot at the ninth.

Round 4
Brendon Todd fired a bogey-free 4-under 66. He finished at 14-under 266, good enough to beat Mike Weir by 2 shots. It was the 77th career PGA Tour event for Todd, who twice in the past five years had to go back to back to the Web.com Tour to regain full playing privileges. He earned $1,242,000, a PGA Tour exemption through the 2015-16 season and a spot next year in the Masters.

Weir, the 2003 Masters champion who won the last of his eight PGA Tour titles in 2007, finished with a 67.  Graham DeLaet tied for 7th at 8-under 272.
Weir had his best tournament since finishing second behind Dustin Johnson at Pebble Beach in 2009. The 44-year-old had a stretch when he missed 17 cuts in a row after he injured his elbow, including all 14 tournaments he started in 2012.

Best golf I played in a long time. I was happy with the way I played,” Weir said. ” I was definitely determined to try to win today, but I can feel good about the way I handled things out there.”

He had birdies on four of the first five holes. He was 13 under and ahead of Todd by two strokes when his tee shot at No. 5 settled 1 1/2 feet from the cup. That came after Weir blindly hit out of a fairway bunker to 3 feet at No. 4. But he missed the fairway and green for a bogey at the 431-yard sixth hole whileTodd, who played the last 31 holes at TPC Four Seasons without a bogey, was tapping in at the fifth for a 2 shot swing.

It was the Spaniard’s 21st European Tour win and his second of the season after he won at Hong Kong in December, also following a playoff, at the age of 49 years, 337 days.

Pieters led by two shots going into the final round at the PGA Catalunya Resort but only managed a 3-over 75 despite an eagle on No. 15. Jimenez shot a 73, while Green carded 72. It was the first win for Jimenez at the tournament in 27 appearances.

King Kaymer wins at TPC Sawgrass, Final scoreboards

PGA Tour
The Players Championship
TPC Sawgrass
Ponte Verde, Fla
Canadians:  David Hearn T6 -9 70 7168 70 Graham DeLaet +2 69 77 MC

Round 4
Martin Kaymer nearly blew a three-shot lead after a 90-minute rain delay until he holed a 30-foot par putt on the famous 17th island green. He got up-and-down with his putter from short of the 18th green for one last par and a 1-under 71 good enough to win the Players Championship.

Jim Furyk closed with a 66,he had to wait after the rain delay to rap in a 3-foot par putt and it looked as though it might be enough to force a playoff, or even win outright when the 29-year-old German began to crumble. Furyk had to settle for a runner-up finish for the second straight week. Sergio Garcia made a strong run until he hit into the water on the par-5 11th and lost momentum by missing too many putts. He closed with a 70 to finish alone in third at 11 under.

It was the 14th victory worldwide for Kaymer, ended an 0-for-29 drought. His last win was at the Nedbank Challenge in South Africa at the end of 2012, right after he delivered the crucial point for Europe in its Ryder Cup comeback. Kaymer was No. 1 in the world in February 2011 until he wanted to retool his swing to be able to hit a greater variety of shots.

Jordan Spieth, tied with Kaymer going into the final round, made his first bogey of the tournament on the fifth hole, and plenty more followed. He closed with a 74.

David Hearn tied for sixth, just four shots back of champion Kaymer. He climbed two spots Sunday after a 2-under par 70. He finished at 279 with four others including Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Francesco Molinari and Jimmy Walker

However, some European Tour members said the tournament should have been stopped after Ian MacGregor, the 52-year-old Zimbabwe-born caddy to Scotland’s Alastair Forsyth, collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack on the ninth fairway – Forsyth’s final hole.

Golf Canada launches Young Pro program..

Golf Canada is pleased to announce the names of the athletes who have been selected to the new Team Canada Young Pro program.

In all, five athletes – three female and two male – have been chosen to the inaugural Team Canada Young Pro Squad. Developed in partnership with the PGA of Canada and supported in large part by the Golf Canada Foundation, the Young Pro program was created to bridge the gap between amateur and professional performance on the international golfing stage.

There has been a critical gap for our top amateur golfers making the difficult jump to professional golf and the launch of the Team Canada Young Pro initiative is designed to bridge that gap,” said Golf Canada CEO Scott Simmons. “We have seen tremendous results for Team Canada amateur athletes at national, international and collegiate competitions. With the launch of Young Pro, we expect those strong results to carry over to the professional ranks including the PGA and LPGA Tours, the various developmental tours and ultimately the Olympic Games beginning in 2016.”

A trio of LPGA players including Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Toronto, Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., and Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., will join the new Young Pro squad. All three players are graduates of Golf Canada’s National Amateur Squad and have secured full playing status for the LPGA Tour’s 2014 season. Bentham, 22, was the top-earning Canadian on the LPGA Tour last season after finishing a personal best T-11 at the Evian Championship. Kim, 23, secured her full card by finishing in sixth on the LPGA’s Symetra Tour’s Volvik Race to the Card. Kirby, 23, earned her spot after a fifth place finish at the LPGA’s Final Qualifying in December.

On the men’s side, Web.com Tour players Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., and Toronto’s Albin Choi debut as the first two male members of the Team Canada Young Pro program. A two-time Canada Amateur champion, Hughes, 23, finished the 2013 season atop PGA TOUR Canada’s Order of Merit after capturing the Cape Breton Celtic Classic. Choi, 22, is also a former Canadian Amateur champion who earned his ticket to the Web.com Tour after a 15th place finish at final qualifying in December.

I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of Team Canada and the new young pro squad,” said Mackenzie Hughes. “The coaching and support staff has played a big role in my development and my transition to pro golf. I also want to thank the Golf Canada Foundation as well as all the sponsors and donors that have made this program possible.”

Each member of the Young Pro squad will receive funding as well as access to Team Canada’s coaching staff and sport science experts. Men’s National Squad coach Derek Ingram and Women’s National Team coach Tristan Mullally will provide coaching to their respective Young Pro players. In addition, the athletes will have access to Team Canada’s sport science staff that includes psychologist, Dr. Adrienne Leslie-Toogood, strength and conditioning coach, Jason Glass, nutritionist, Nicole Springle and physiotherapist Greg Redman.

JB Holmes made it harder than he needed to on the final hole at Quail Hollow until rapping in a 3-foot bogey putt for a 1-under 71 and a one-shot victory over Jim Furyk in the Wells Fargo Championship. Furyk finished his Sunday-best 65 some two hours earlier.

Jason Bohn had the best chance to catch Holmes. He was one shot behind when he pulled a 4-iron into the water on the par-3 17th, making double bogey. Phil Mickelson never had a chance, missing four putts from the 4-foot range and closing with a 76 to finish out of the top 10.

After 3 years of injury including two rounds of brain surgery, it was only last week, that he earned enough money to keep his card for the rest of the year from a medical extension. Now, he’s headed to The Players Championship next week for the richest prize in golf, and more importantly, secured a spot in the PGA Championship this summer in his native Kentucky

David Hearn shot an even-par 72 to finish tied for 44th at 1-under 287. Mike Weir had trouble finding the bottom of the cup, firing a 5-over 77 on the day to finish tied for 57th at 2-over 290

Round 4

Felipe Aguilar surged into the lead at The Championship at Laguna National with a stunning back-nine 28 – capped by a birdie on the par-3 17th and an eagle on the par-4 18th – and then had to wait to see if anyone could catch him. Co-overnight leader Anders Hansen was the last golfer to have a chance, but he failed to birdie his final two holes to force a playoff, giving Aguilar his first European Tour title in six years.

The Chilean shot a final round 10-under 62 to finish at 22-under 266, one stroke ahead of Hansen and American David Lipsky in joint-second

Mid American Conference Championship

Team Canada’s Corey Conners captured medalist honours on Sunday, lifting Kent State to a record sixth consecutive Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship title.
Conners, a Listowel, Ont. native, finished at 11-under par (72-67-65-73) thru 72 holes. The 21-year-old’s play was highlighted by a third round hole-in-one on the par 3 12th – the fourth of his young career. The ace boosted Conners to a tournament low 65, good for a six stroke cushion heading into Sunday’s final round where he went on to shoot 73 and capture his second title in three years (he won it back in 2012).

His final year now features three NCAA titles – he won the General Hackler Championship and Davidson Invitational earlier in the season. Along with his NCAA victories, Conners took home the prestigious Jones Cup in February, one of the highest ranked amateur events in the world.

Taylor Pendrith, also a member of Team Canada, finished runner-up behind Kent State teammate Conners at 6-under par. Pendrith, a native of Richmond Hill, Ont., was the only player to shoot under par in each of the four rounds. The long-driving senior won last year’s title, making this the third consecutive year a Canadian has won the MAC medalist honours

Round 2 underway in Singapore, Cabrera leads Quail Hollow

PGA TOUR
WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP,
Quail Hollow Club,
Charlotte, North Carolina

Canadians  Fritsch 79 WD, Weir E 72, Ames E 72, Hearn -2 70

Thursday

Angel Cabrera played in the early, calm conditions and thrived on the new Bermuda greens at Quail Hollow. He made seven birdies, including a 40-footer from just off the green, and turned in a 6-under 66 that stood as the lead the rest of the day.

He made a couple of long putts, most of the birdie chances one would expect to make and hit it close enough times to post his lowest score of the year, and only his fourth round this year in the 60s.

Coming off his first missed cut at the Masters in 17 years, Phil Mickelson handled the strong, swirling wind in the afternoon for a 5-under 67, tied with Martin Flores. Mickelson hit only one fairway on the back nine. He bogeyed both the par 3s. He chipped poorly and atoned for that with long par putts

Webb Simpson, a member at Quail Hollow, might have joined Cabrera except for the way he finished each nine. He took double bogey on No. 9 when he hit into the trees and three-putted, and made bogey on No. 18 with another wayward tee shot. Other than that, his card was filled with seven birdies for a 68 along with Stewart Cink and Jonathan Byrd.

Rory McIlroy made six birdies and was in the large group at 69 that included Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer, who played his final four holes in 2-under par despite not making a birdie or a par. Kaymer went bogey-eagle-eagle-bogey.

Canadians : David Hearn opened with a 2-under 70 to sit tied for 16th. Stephen Ames and Mike Weir are two back of Hearn after shooting matching 72′s.

Brad Fritsch struggled to a 79 and withdrew citing personal reasons.
