Ryder Cup: Europe would be happy with a split of morning foursomes

Ryder Cup scoreboard http://www.rydercup.com/scoring

The Friday morning foursomes got under way on a cool foggy morning in Chaska, Minnesota on the very long Hazeltine course, and as the sun came out and the temperature rose it has become apparent the European squad would be happy to settle for a split.

Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters lost 5 of their first 8 holes before winning the 9th and are 4 down to the very strong pairing of DJ and Matt Kuchar and they haven't hit a fairway yet, so this one will go to the USA.

Spieth and Reed  were 3 up before Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose won the 9th and are on the clock for slow play, so USA is 2 up with 5 to play, looks like a win for what I see as the USA's best team. Rosy and Henrik haven't made anything this morning.

Rory is not at his best yet this morning but little Andy Sullivan is saving him, they were A/S through 13 holes against Mickelson and Fowler who won 7,8 and 9 to overcome the Euro's 2 up lead. Andy has just stiffed a 3 iron to 6 feet on the 230 yard par 3 13th and Rory made the putt to go 1up with 5 to play

Meanwhile Sergio Garcia \ Martin Kaymer won the 2nd hole and still lead 1up through 12 over an uninspired thus far,Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson.

So USA seems to have 2 points in the bag, and the other two are in the balance, so I'd say Europe would be delighted with a split at this point..

Play continues this morning with the afternoon fourballs due to start at 12.30pm.

When the pairings are announced you can see them on the link above..

USA Ryder Cup favourites ?..just what the European squad wants to hear..

2016 Ryder Cup teams, schedule http://www.rydercup.com/

Once again, in particular when the Ryder Cup is on this side of the pond, all the pre event hype has the USA team led by Davis Love as the favourite to win.

Phil Mickelson is lavish in his praise of the new and improved preparations, poignant in his criticism of past efforts, Tiger is back as an assistant captain along with Bubba who joins Jim Furyk, Tom Lehman and Steve Stricker. They are better in this role than they were as players where Tiger and Furyk in particular had poor records.

The team is stacked with DJ, Jordan, Rickie and Phil backed up by sparkplug Patrick Reed and solid pros like JB Holmes, Zach Johnson, Jimmy Walker, Matt Kuchar, Ryan Moore and Brent Snedeker.

They are at home in front of the highly partisan fans in Chaska, Minnesota on a fabulous Hazeltine course, they have a seemingly perfect blend of bombers and technicians, short games and great putters. Heck, the USA junior Ryder Cup team even won their match this year.

The European have six rookies in their squad, most over here don't know any of them, lambs to the slaughter apparently.

Well my friends, if you know anything about the history of this event, all that is just what the European team has fed off of all these years..and what they want to hear...

David vs Goliath, the big rich Yanks, the beautiful weather, luxury beyond belief, big cars, spoiled kids, on and on it goes..

Of course much of that has changed, some of the European team like Rory and Henrik have homes in Florida, many of the young guns went to college in America, all have much more money than their peers in years gone by.... but the premise remains the same, and that's something the USA can't change.

It doesn't mean that Europe will win for the 9th time in the last 11 matches, but the underdog role suits them just fine.

Don't forget they have the Olympic gold medal winner (Justin Rose), the Open Champion (Henrik Stenson) the Masters champion (Danny Willett) and the Fed Ex Cup winner (Rory McIlroy)... and they are still the underdogs.... really ??

Watch here for the pairings as soon as they come out.. Today is a practice day.

Arnold Palmer " The King wore his crown with great humility"

Tired and happy to be heading for bed after work in the wee hours of this morning I was saddened to hear of Mr Palmer's passing from heart complications in his 87th year.

My first thought was that my late Dad and brother would be thrilled at that great bogey free golf course in heaven to have such a celebrity join them in the clubhouse !!

In 1960 I saw Arnie in person for the first time. My mother had made her biannual trip in July on the old B.O.A.C plane back to Scotland with me and my 3 year old brother in tow. Those were long journey's back then, from Malton to Gander NFLD, refuel then across the Atlantic to Shannon in Ireland, then the short hop across the Irish Sea to Prestwick. Then somehow mother would round up our luggage and get us on the train up to Glasgow where her mother and father were waiting.

Now to Arnie. Again mother and I got on the train, this time to visit my dad's parents across to the east coast, in Perth. My uncle Ken was a policeman there, more importantly a scratch golfer and he and two of his pals drove me down the coast to St Andrews where the Open was being played in the middle of the week and all the talk was about Arnold Palmer who had won the Masters and the US Open that year and was actually coming to Scotland !!

There is a huge public putting green just to the right of the first fairway at St Andrews, and uncle Ken talked to 2 local policemen who helped young Bryan through the massive crowd around the green to the front, and there, right there, was Arnold Palmer with his big red and white Wilson bag, practising his putting with his new Scottish caddie Tip. I remember how tanned and handsome he was, and also he was complaining to Tip about the British cigarettes they were smoking.

He of course was magnetic, I watched him and nobody else until after he made three short ones in a row, he announced in a loud voice, playing to the crowd, " lets see if we can remember how to do that on the course Tip"..

Later back in Perth we watched on the BBC, as he made a charge in the last round on Saturday where he lost to an Australian Kel Nagle by a shot, but he won much more than the 900 pounds second prize, he won the hearts of not only everyone in Scotland, but around the world with his go for broke play, his down to earth thumbs up, smiles, winks, firm handshakes..Arnie's Army was being mustered and I was in the rank and file.

I began to play because of Arnold Palmer, I followed every tournament he played in, my dad and I until the day he died gave each other, and others the thumbs up. I watched how great and yet how humble he was, how easily he cried about issues in life, I watched and learned how much he cared about the common man, I watched and learned what a loyal friend he was to those he knew...and I have tried to carry myself the same way.

They next time I saw him in person was at Muirfield in 1980 where Tom Watson beat Lee Trevino in the rain. My pal Ronnie Sinclair was the club accountant and he got me a clubhouse pass and there was Arnie in his blue rain gear and tartan rain hat sleeping in a chair waiting to play a practice round. His big strong hands clasped over his stomach looked like a bunch of banana's, his face at peace, all lined and tanned from all the years in the sun. He was well passed  his prime, but still the man everyone wanted to see.

Its hard to explain his immense impact on our lives, not to mention this game of golf to the younger people of today. He arrived just as TV started covering golf which allowed us all to follow him for free, and he along with a chubby young Jack Nicklaus were a godsend for TV networks and the rest is history.

Rory McIlroy just won the Fed Ex Cup, Tour Championship and the $11.6 million that goes with it. Arnold Palmer won 92 times around the world for about $7 million. He of course made all his money off the course with his clothing line, golf course design, and as the most coveted pitchman of his time.

Rory, Tiger and all the rest may be at Hazeltine this week for the Ryder Cup, but I know if they can't make it to the funeral, they will be thanking their lucky stars for the man they will be burying for all their riches.

RIP Arnie, you both thrilled us and put us all at ease with your gracious presence, you will always be the King that wore his crown with great humility, there will never be another like you.

Dustin Johnson-"Gretzky" is a class of his own at Tour Championship

PGA Tour Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/leaderboard.html

It's hard for me to say exactly, but it is for sure the day Pauline Gretzky set her heart on a hard partying, great golfer called Dustin Johnson, his life changed completely.

Pauline was a party animal all by herself if you remember, with pictures she posted of herself on Twitter so suggestively inflammatory her Canadian icon of a dad Wayne, forced her to shut it down.

Meanwhile DJ as he is commonly known, was taking time of his own off of his profession  'for personal reasons" wildly rumoured to be an inability to curtail his abuse of alcohol and drugs when he was with his mates outside the ropes..

These days the hugely talented Johnson has come through to fulfill all the raw talent that was making him the game's biggest enigma, while Pauline has gone from night's in her "g"string at Caesar's Palace to night's as a mother and doting wife with her hubby, mum and famous dad.

Through it all the "Wayner and Janet", no strangers to the media spotlight to say the least have been right there, the steadying influence, the guiding example, the comforting resource on which,  shall we say the spoiled youngsters turned into responsible adults..

Johnson is the best player in the world right now, and as we head into this weekend he leads the Tour Championship by a shot on paper, but by a mile in reality.

On a tough East Lake course where only 10 players remain under par, Johnson added at -3 67 to his opening 66 to lead at -7, 203, a shot ahead of bridesmaid Kevin Chappell as he closes in on the $10 million FedEx Cup prize, not to mention the  PGA player of the year award, especially now that Jason Day has been forced to WD with the resumption of the back injury that has plagued him all year.

Chappell, who has made only one bogey in 36 holes, shot a 68 and will be in the final group of a playoff event for the second time this year. He has been a runner-up three times this season.

Kevin Kisner (70) and Hideki Matsuyama (71) are four shots behind at -3, Rory McIlroy shot a spotty 70 and leads the group at -2 which includes the red hot Paul Casey, who I picked to contend with Johnson before the week began.

Jordan Spieth 68 72 E is out of the picture right now as he has been for much of the year, so it all seems to be in the hands of the new and improved Mr. Johnson - " Gretzky"....

He used to find a way to blow these things, not so much anymore...

Tour Championship..'Playing with house money"

PGA Tour, Tour Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/leaderboard.html

A debate broke out on the Golf Channel yesterday between former world #1 David Duval now turned analyst, and recent victorious Ryder Cup captain, and veteran European Tour player Paul McGinley about who was the best player in the world.

Duval was very assertive in saying that it was Dustin Johnson when "it was his week with the putter" was unbeatable, citing his easy length and accuracy off the tee, much improved wedge game and regular placing in the top third on tour with the flat stick, topped off with the inner confidence he know carries with a US Open on his CV..

McGinley, much more the politician, said he thought it was Rory who from tee to green is as good as there is, and with a record that includes four majors by the age of 25, and a gold plated Ryder Cup record despite weeks when he putts like an eight handicapper, was the best, although he was quick to include Jason Day and Jordan Spieth in the top four for obvious reasons..

One thing is for certain, all four of them are playing with house money as this regular PGA Tour season wraps up this week at the Tour Championship on the historic par 70 East Lake course in Atlanta.

All are already rich beyond their wildest dreams, travelling the world as they decide in first class accommodation, all with wonderful wives and or families for support, surrounded in adulation by their peers, and public.

While they are fuelled to varying degrees, by their desire to place themselves as prominently as possible in the history books beside all the legends, they are all great friends, sharing private moments that they somehow keep separate from we mortals.

This week in Atlanta all four are in the top 10 after round one, Johnson T1 at -4 66, Day T3 -3 67, with Spieth and Rory T7 -2 68 as they fight with the likes of Kevin Chappell (66) Hideki Matsuyama (66) for another $1.8 million first prize and the $10m bonus thrown into the pot as the Fed Ex Cup winner.

Next week the pressure gets turned up by as many notches as the game has, this time at Hazeltine for the Ryder Cup where there is no money necessary, just national pride, with DJ and Spieth as intrigal parts of the US team desperate to stop the 8 out of 10 wins by the Europeans, led of course by Rory and his mates.

Still, through it all, they remain friends and in a way colleagues in a very rare wealthy circle, travelling without a financial care in the world, playing with house money, with many more years to come.

Weekend wrap up..final scoreboards, stories..Canadian scoring.

This week brings the culmination of the Fed Ex Cup playoffs with the  Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, where by the way they will be re routing the holes, playing the front nine last to finish with a shortish par 5 instead of the traditional par 3.

Over the weekend there was plenty of excitement, it's a great time of year for sports, with the Ryder Cup just two weeks away, the NFL underway, the CFL coming down to the playoffs, MLB with crucial games every night for every team in contention (see Blue Jays!), all the major soccer leagues, the list goes on and on..

Here are the final scoreboards and stories from the weekend.

LPGA / LET Evian Championship http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/the-evian-championship/results

In Gee Chun shot a final 69 to finish on -21 in a steady rain, breaking the record for men and women of -20 held by Henrik Stenson and Jason Day. She bettered the women’s record by two. She has 2 wins on the LPGA tour, both majors.

Brooke Henderson 69 71 67 70 -7 T9, Maude Aimee LeBlanc 70 74 76 71 +7 63rd.

European Tour Italian Open http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2016072/leaderboard/index.html

What a finale with Italy's best golfer Francesco Molinari (65) out playing Masters Champion and Ryder Cup rookie Danny Willett (66) to win the Italian Open in Milan,
becoming the first Italian to win his national Open twice since the event became part of the European Tour in 1972.

The 2006 champion also became the first Italian to win any European Tour event twice as he claimed his fourth win and his first since the 2012 Reale Seguros Open de EspaƱa in 2012.

Web.com Tour Albertsons Boise Open http://www.pgatour.com/webcom/tournaments/albertsons-boise-open-presented-by-kraft-

PGA Tour Champions Nature Valley First Tee Open http://www.pgatour.com/champions/tournaments/nature-valley-first-tee-open-at-pebble-beach/leaderboard.html

If you are a Brit, your ears perked up when you saw veteran English journeyman Paul Broadhurst continue the fine play that won him the British Senior Open in July finishing with a -4 68 for a one-stroke victory over Bernhard Langer and Kevin Sutherland on the storied Pebble Beach links.

His win at Carnoustie was the biggest of his life, coming at the age of 51, now full of confidence here he is with the trophy and full exemption on the Champions Tour for next year, all good for a guy who's son told people in the local supermarket before his Senior Open win, "this is my dad, he used to be a pretty good golfer !"

Canadian Scores : Stephen Ames 69 70 71 -5 T10, Rod Spittle 73 73 70 +1 T36

The leaders are Micheal Thompson and Scott Stallings at -16.

Andrew “Beef” Johnston has caught the attention of fans on this side of the pond with his folksy personality, shot an -8 63 on Friday and followed it with 70 yesterday to sit 3rd at -14, putting the bearded Englishmen in position to wrap up a PGA Tour card.

Other Canadian scores: Roger Sloan 69 68 71 -5 and Adam Svensson 71 68 75 +1.

Molinari leads his national championship at the Italian Open

European Tour Italian Open leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2016072/leaderboard/index.html

Off to a fast start this morning, Francesco Molinari is -3 through 4 holes and currently leads his Italian Open at -19, just a shot ahead of Ryder Cup rookie Danny Willett who will be pleasing captain Darren Clarke with scores of 66 64 67 on this rain soaked Golf Club Milano.

In fact of the Ryder Cuppers' in Italy this week, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Andy Sullivan shot 65's yesterday, Martin Kaymer had a 67, Cabrera Bello a 64 and Chris Wood has a 63 in his scores, while Lee Westwood missed the cut.

So far the rain which has delayed play on Thursday and Friday is holding off.

Henderson's fine play lost in the scoring sensation of the Asian Invasion at Evian Championship

LPGA/LET Evian Championship leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/the-evian-championship/leaderboard

One year before he'd struck a shot at the Open Championship, as he peered out at the rain and wind sweeping over the Old Course at St Andrews, the late great Christy O'
Connor said go "let me sign for even par right now and I'll go home happy"

That sums up the prevailing theory for majors. Even par should be a good score at what are supposed to be the stiffest tests of the game for those four championships (five in the women's game) of the year.

Fast forward to today at the Evian Championship, the last major of the year, staged on this beautiful resort course high in the French Alps overlooking Lake Geneva near the Swiss border.

Brooke Henderson is playing very nicely, 69 71 67 -7 which should have her right near the lead, right ?.. Well she is T8... but she is 14 shots behind the leader, the ever smiling South Korean, In Gee Chun 63 66 65 -21 who in turn is 5 shots clear of the all Asian contingent that dominate the Sunday leaderboard, China's Shanshan Feng 64 67 69 -16, then four more South Koreans who are all playing for 2nd place.

Granted the smiling 2015 US Open champion, Chun, who carries a scorecard and an English translation book in her back pocket, has the opportunity to break the lowest winning score in a major championship, male or female. The record for the women is -19, posted on four occasions and matched by Chun on Saturday. The record for the men is -20, set by both Jason Day at the 2015 PGA Championship and Henrik Stenson at the 2016 Open Championship.

With round four well under way I guess I hope she sets the new mark and is likely to, as they play in a steady rain making the course very soft, on the other hand, like Christy said all those years ago, even par should be good enough to win a major.

Incidently Maude Aimee LeBlanc has had rounds of 70 74 76 and is +3 so far today at +10.

Brooke Henderson -2 after two rounds at the Evian Championship

LPGA/LET Evian Championship leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/the-evian-championship/leaderboard

Brooke Henderson was out in the early wave of the final major of the year in women's golf, the Evian Championship in the French Alps at Lake Geneva. She isn't at her very best but has managed to shoot 69, 71 -2 140, currently T22

Alena Sharp has produced rounds of 75 72 +5 and looks like she will miss the cut projected at +3.

Maude Aimee LeBlanc opened with a -1 70, but had five bogey's and a birdie today on her front nine of 39, but has battled back in 35 for a 74 and a +2 total which should make the cut.

Lydia Ko is just outside the top 10 at -4 (70 68).

In the top 10 there are 4 South Koreans, 5 Americans, 1 Chinese, 1 from Taiwan and 1 from Japan, such is the international flavour of an LPGA Tour once so dominated by the USA.

The clubhouse leaders at -11 are Shanshan Feng (64 67) Sung Hyun Park (63 68) but still on the course and currently in the rain at -12 is In Gee Chun through 14 holes.

Round 2 suspended due to torrential rain at Italian Open

European Tour Italian Open leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2016072/leaderboard/index.html

Milan is a beautiful historic city to visit most of the time, but for this year's Italian Open, it has been a storm plagued story.

After Thursday's 5 hours of delays due to torrential rainstorms, thunder and lightning, the field were out early today, most facing 36 holes, and round one did get completed, but with round two underway, another storm system has moved in suspending play indefinitely with England's Chris Paisley in the lead through 13 holes of his 2nd round at -10.

Masters champion Danny Willett is next at -9 also through 13 holes and then veteran Aussie Richard Green who has finished his 2nd round, Chris Hanson and Alexander Levy are all -8, a shot clear of Andy Sullivan and Rikard Karlberg, who has yet to begin his second round.

Web.com playoffs continue in sunshine at Albertson's Boise Open

Web.com Albertsons Boise Open leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/webcom/tournaments/albertsons-boise-open-presented-by-kraft-nabisco/leaderboard.html

Heavy rain delays play in Milan for the Italian Open

European Tour Italian Open leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2016072/leaderboard/index.html

Many of the regulars on the European Tour are enjoying a week of great food and wine down in Milan, along with 19 Italians playing their national championship at the Italian Open. There are seven members of the Ryder Cup team boosting the star power and supporting the announcement that the cup will contested there in 2022.

The weather so far hasn't been good however as the field has been chased off the course twice this morning with heavy rain and lightning in the area and play has now resumed at 1.30pm local time.

Play was almost totally washed out as the bad weather meant that just over an hour's play was possible at Golf Club Milano. The upshot is there is a five hour delay to the morning games yet to tee off and a five-hour delay to the afternoon tee times.

Miguel Angel Jimenez is amongst some notables in the lead at -3 through 9 holes.

Lydia Ko defends her Evian Championship in France

Despite the fact the PGA Tour is off this week before the season finale at the Tour Championship, it's another busy, important weekend of golf including the LPGA/LETs final major, the Evian Championship in France where Lydia Ko defends so let's start there.

LPGA/LET Tour Evian Championship leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/the-evian-championship/leaderboard

The morning wave is already in the clubhouse with a little South Korean, and former US Open winner, In Gee Chun in the lead -8 63. She fuelled that score by hitting 18 greens in regulation.

The weather forecast for Friday and Saturday is cool and wet, so this beautiful mountain resort course near Lake Geneva will be a tough, trying test for the full field.

There are 3 Canadians in the field.  Maude Aimee LeBlanc played early, -1 70. Alena Sharp and Brooke Henderson are in the afternoon wave.

Defending champion Lydia Ko has a lot of demands on her time this week, playing two pro-ams and being requested to attend and speak at 5 dinners, not to mention all of her media interviews and autograph sessions. I think the organizers forget she is there to play a major championship.

Monday morning wrap and US Ryder Cup picks

At 11am this morning Davis Love III will make 3 of his 4 captains picks for this year's Ryder Cup squad, with the 4th coming after the Tour Championship. The much anticipated presser will be the icing on what was another storied weekend in the pro game.

The US team is staring at a 2-8 record since 1995 and of course had a near mutiny on their hands after their thrashing at Gleneagles in 2014.

They have appointed a task force which includes Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson along with captain Love, and have jiggled the selection format from the traditional 10 qualifiers and 2 picks to this year's format.

I believe he will pick Matt Kuchar, JB Holmes and Bubba. Rickie Fowler has played his way off the team. That leaves him with whoever is hottest after East Lake as his final pick.  The Ryder Cup starts at Hazeltine on September 30th.

What a great story, a Dutchman wins his national title on a course simply called the Dutch, and he ties the course record to do it in front of a huge adoring gallery. Congratulations to Joost Luiten who went  out and shot 63 to win the KLM Open by 3 shots over Bernd Weisberger.

Luiten becomes the first Dutch player to win his national Open twice since it joined the European Tour in 1972,following his win in 2013 and makes him a five-time winner on Tour

PGA Tour BMW Championship final leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/bmw-championship/leaderboard.html

Paul Casey is playing some of his best golf, he just keeps running into hot hands. Last week he was 2nd to Rory who went out and shot 65 on Sunday to win the Deutsche Bank, this week it was Dustin Johnson who is at his absolute peak, making the game seem ridiculously easy on his way to a -5 67 -23 total for his 3rd win in his last 8 starts. He is the player of the year, 2016.

Still Casey has banked $1,836,000, not bad for a fortnight's work and he moves into the coveted top 5 at the Tour Championship for a shot at the $10 million bonus.

DJ is awesome off the tee, finally making all the important putts and has a sharp wedge game, there isn't a course out there he can't overpower.

I am not alone in thinking his win at the US Open finally got the monkey off his back, and he is now winning as regularly as we all knew he could, but didn't.. if you know what I mean.

I will be interested to see how his bottle is when the heat of the Ryder Cup gets turned up in 3 weeks time, but I do know he is better shape to handle it than ever before.

David Hearn shot a 71 to finish the event tied for 32nd at 5-under 283 and he drops out of the Fed Ex Cup playoffs as a result.

Here are the top 30 qualifiers for the Tour Championship http://www.pgatour.com/fedexcup/projected-standings.html

Web.com Tour DAP Championship final leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/webcom/tournaments/dap-championship/leaderboard.html

As expected with such a crowded weekend leaderboard this event ended up in a 4 man playoff  with Bryson DeChambeau beating Andres Gonzales with a 5-foot par putt on the second hole of a playoff at Canterbury Golf Club.

DeChambeau and Gonzales each birdied the 18th on the first extra, eliminating Nicholas Lindheim and Argentina’s Julian Etulain.

DeChambeau shot a +1 71 in windy conditions to match Gonzales (68), Lindheim (66) and Etulain (67) at -7 273 and with the win he wraps up his PGA Tour card for next season.

Canadians:  MacKenzie Hughes T46 69 68 72 74 +3, Adam Svensson T56 70 70 74 71 +5, Albin Choi T56, 72 67 75 71 +5

The Saturday Story..BMW Chamionship. DAP Championship.. live leaderboards, news..

The BMW Championship on the rain soaked, soft Crooked Stick course in Carmel Indiana is producing very low scores, including a new course record, as the field continues to get whittled down to the final 30 for the Tour Championship, so there is a lot at stake this weekend, including captain's picks for the US Ryder Cup team.

Meanwhile just outside Cleveland at the historic Canterbury GC, the Web.com. playoffs are underway at the DAP Championship, there are 3 Canadians who have survived the cut, and there is a six way tie for the lead on a jammed leaderboard.

Here are live leaderboards for both as well as the KLM Open in Holland.

PGA Tour BMW Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/bmw-championship/leaderboard.html

The story here is that Roberto Castro who has gone 125 starts on the PGA Tour without a win was well clear of the field with a pair of 65's -14 until he was caught by Dustin Johnson who added a course record -9 63 to his opening 67 -14 and they are 3 shots ahead going into play today.

Johnson has been terrific this year with his US Open and WGC titles, so he is a Player of the Year candidate, will be in the coveted top 5 at the Tour Championship, is already in the Ryder Cup and much more to follow.

Castro on the other hand is currently at #53 in the FedEx Cup and remember only the top 30 make it to the finale at East Lake.

Again the weather remains unsettled and play has been delayed again this morning for a least an hour.

Paul Casey continues his fine play, he is next at 67 66 -11, then JB Holmes bidding for a captain's pick is 69 65 -10 along with Chris Kirk 68 66.

The closest after these guys are at -7, however with the course playing so soft, 64's and 65's will be out there all weekend.

David Hearn is hoping he'll be one of them after he shot a +1 73 and is in a big group at -4, T19 along with Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.

Web.com Tour DAP Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/webcom/tournaments/dap-championship/leaderboard.html

First the Canadian scores : MacKenzie Hughes 69 68 -3 T19 and he has move to -4 with an early birdie this morning, Albin Choi 72 67 -1 T36, Adam Svensson 70 70 E T50.... Brad Fritsch +3 and Roger Sloan +5 missed the cut that fell on E.

The story at this one is the jammed leaderboard with 6 guys T1 -6 including Stuart Appleby making a bid to return to the PGA Tour, and Bryson DeChambeau.

This one will come down to the wire this at least 30 guys within 3 shots of the lead.

European Tour KLM Open leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2016070/leaderboard/index.html

What a summer veteran Aussie Scott Hend is having, including a brilliant 4th place showing for his country at Rio2016. He has just posted a 64 to grab the lead by a shot at -14 after 3 rounds on a course they simply call the Dutch.

South African Brandon Stone had set the clubhouse target at -10 with a stunning 63, but he has been pipped by local hope Joost Luiten who birdied the last for a -2 69 good for T3 at -11 so he is the top Dutch player going into the final round.

BMW Championship continues round one on Friday after a Thursday rain delay

The BMW Golf Championship resumed play at 5:30 pm after a 3.5 hour rain delay on Thursday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a severe weather alert for the Carmel area near Crooked Stick Golf Course at around 2:00 pm. The air horns for the BMW PGA Tournament sounded and fans were told to take shelter before the skies opened up and flooded some parts of the course.

PGA Tour BMW Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/leaderboard.html

Play will begin at 8.00am this morning with more bad weather in the forecast, the delay meant that just under half the 69-man field finished the round.

American Robert Castro is in with a -7 65  currently good for the lead. David Hearn has only played 3 holes, so you can see how spread out the field is, and the course is very wet, especially for the spectators.

Hideki Matsuyama, Paul Casey and Adam Scott are at -4 on the back nine. Casey had the 54-hole lead last week at the TPC Boston. Rory McIlroy is -3 under through 10 holes. Jordan Spieth is at -2.  Rickie Fowler vying for a captain's pick for the Ryder Cup opened with a 75.

However the sun is shining this morning, the course is soft and the bad weather is not scheduled until around noon.

Dutch amateur Rowin Caron thrills home fans at KLM Open

European Tour KLM Open leaderboard
http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2016070/leaderboard/index.html

This is the Dutch national championship and the first news to report is that the defending champion and hottest player in the world right now, Thomas Pieters has withdrawn because he has suffered an allergic reaction to a bee sting during an exhibition match on Monday afternoon.

Young Englishman, Ben Evans set the pace for the morning starts with a -6 65, and that held up for the lead throughout the day.however there are over 20 players within 2 shots of him.

Ben's story goes like this. In 2015 he played in 21 events despite not having a full exemption category and he secured his card in dramatic fashion at the UBS Hong Kong Open with a closing 65 which moved him to the final 111th spot in the Race to Dubai, and when Brooks Koepka was taken out of the rankings the following day, Evans had earned a full rookie season. He will need a strong finish to keep his card as he has only made 3 cuts in his last 13 starts.

The story of the day however is Dutch amateur Rowin Caron who is one of 8 players who finished at -5 66. The 23 year old has made five European Tour appearances, all of them in this event, and he was not scared to talk about the possibility of winning his home Open

"I am really happy," he said. "I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens so in some ways it was a pretty easy round. The wind got up a little bit later in the round but I was playing well so it was a solid round."

Dutch veteran, Joost Luiten is in at -2 69.

Weather threatens the FedEx Cup playoffs today at Crooked Stick

PGA Tour BMW Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/bmw-championship/leaderboard.html

David Hearn, Hudson Swafford and Luke Donald will be playing in front of a huge gallery when they tee off at 2.04pm today at this 3rd leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Indiana.

All are playing well, Hearn T8 last week at the Deutsche Bank, but the real reason is the group just ahead of them, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott.

It is an incredibly muggy, rainy, thunder and lightning system that has settled over the NE and sadly I think this may well end up being the story of this BMW Championship today, for the 69 players and fans.

On a week when Tiger has announced his return to the game, as you go through this leaderboard, look at all the young guys I have been reporting on and writing about who have arrived since his departure who are now established regulars,

Tony Finau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger, James Hahn, Emiliano Grillo, Smylie Kaufman.. the list goes on and on as these young guys join Rory, Jordan and Jason, all in their twenties, and all making a boat load of money, thanks in large part by the aforementioned Mr. Woods who will be teeing it up Oct.,13-16 at the Safeway Open on the Silverado course in the Napa Valley before flying to the Turkish Open at a ridiculously high end Turkish resort on the Mediterranean, where the starting price for a home is a mere $5m US or just $2500.00 per night.

On a personal note, be careful out there today if you are part of this weather system, it got up to over 40*c yesterday where I was signed up to do yard work, and despite drinking gallons of water I stilled nearly passed out later in the afternoon.

Best just stay close to the A/C until this muggy mess blows out to the Atlantic. However the guys who are playing today don't have that option, and if the weatherman is right it's going to be a long day.

Noren wins Omega European Masters in a playoff

European Tour Omega European Masters final leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2016068/leaderboard/index.html

Alex Noren overcame Scott Hend on the first play-off hole to win the Omega European Masters for the second time at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

The Swede won his maiden title in the Alps in 2009 and his victory on Sunday was his sixth overall and second of the season after his triumph at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open in July.

Noren also finished in the top ten at the 100th Open de France and reached the final of the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play as he enjoys a brilliant summer.

Chappell and Ko move into contention

Saturday is call moving day and yesterday both Kevin Chappell -8 64 at the Deutsche Bank and Lydia Ko 64 at the Manulife Classic lived right up to that billing.

I would have Brooke Henderson in that category as well as she had it to -8 standing on the 17th tee, sadly she made bogey there and on 18 to fall back to -6 after a 69. Anne Catherine Tanguay 68 is at -7 as is Alena Sharp 70. Maude Aimee LeBlanc shot 72 to sit at -6.

Manulife Classic leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/manulife-lpga-classic/leaderboard

Ko had 8 birdies, went out in 32 and equalled that number coming in to get to -10, now just 4 shots behind the leader Mi Hyang Lee 66, -14.

Chappell's -7 64 gives him a one-shot lead and another chance at his first PGA Tour victory. He goes into today's 3rd round at -11, 131, one shot ahead of PGA champion Jimmy Walker (64) and Paul Casey (66).

David Hearn has a pair of 68s -6 and he is T13. Adam Hadwin shot a 72 and is +2

LPGA Tour Manulife Classic leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/manulife-lpga-classic/leaderboard

It's going to take some good scoring from one of the four Canadians who made the cut to catch leader, American Marina Alex who is at -10 after she eagled her final hole for an -8 64 for the halfway lead of the LPGA Manulife Classic.

Brooke Henderson shot 71 and is T46 at -3 alongside Anne Catherine Tanguay (69) and she summed up her day like this: “Not exactly what I was looking for, but that birdie on my last hole kind of made me feel a lot better about the day, which is always nice, and -3 I can’t complain too much.”

Alena Sharp shot 70 -5 total T12 as she continues to play her best golf, while Maude-AimĆ©e Leblanc shot 71 T22nd at -4.

By the way, another news worthy story, and not a good one is that Michelle Wie missed the cut by a stroke and this former superstar has missed 12 of 20 cuts this season and has fallen all the way to 112th on the money list.

PGA Tour Champions Shaw Charity Classic leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/champions/tournaments/shaw-charity-classic/leaderboard.html

Opening day in Calgary was interrupted by heavy rain, thunder, and lightning and Canyon Meadows GC was turned into a dart board.

When they added them all up it was " Frosty," David Frost who made two eagles on his way to -8 62 to take the first-round lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ Shaw Charity Classic. The tournament record is 61 set by Fred Couples and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Defending champion Jeff Maggert and Argentina’s Jose Coceres shot -7 63s while

European Tour Omega European Masters leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2016/tournamentid=2016068/leaderboard/index.html

There aren't many more beautiful places in the world than Crans Montana in the Swiss Alps and round 3 of the European Masters is already in the books with Scott Hend in the lead after an impressive 65 got him to -13 for a one shot lead over Alex Noren who fired a 66 to get to -12.

Richard Bland is next at -10 after his 69, and at -9 are Alejandro CaƱizares, Mikko Ilonen, Andrew Johnston and Romain Langasque.

Aussie veteran Hend is enjoying a renaissance in 2016 so far, winning the True Thailand Classic earlier and then representing his country at the Men's Olympic Golf Competition.

Hearn and Hadwin continue Fed Ex Cup playoffs at Deutsche Bank Championship

Deutsche Bank Championship leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/deutsche-bank-championship/leaderboard.html

All the big names are in play on this TPC Boston as they all continue to position themselves for the final 30 who will play the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta for the Fed Ex Cup and the $10m prize that comes with it.

Scoring is low in this morning's early going, as you can see from the leaderboard link, Kevin Chappell is the leader at -4 through nine holes.

Henderson pleased with opening 70 at the windy Manulife Classic

LPGA Tour Manulife Classic leaderboard http://www.lpga.com/tournaments/manulife-lpga-classic/leaderboard

There are13 Canadians in the field for the 2016 Manulife LPGA Classic and the best of the bunch were at -3 69, Alena Sharp and Maude Aimee LeBlanc.

The one getting all the attention was as always world #3 Brooke Henderson who was at -4 until she dropped a couple of shots on her back nine to end up at -2 70.

" All in all I'm happy with -2 on my opening round although disappointed to drop a couple of shots late in my round for these amazing fans, whose support I fed off of all day. The wind really picked up on the back nine. It was kind of difficult. You could see all three of us not really playing exactly the way we wanted just because of the wind and the conditions"

Until her 18th hole, the leader who is heralded as one of the most beautiful women on tour,  Belen Mozo, a very fit little Spaniard, was playing the 18th at -7, but took a triple bogey to fall to -4, leaving the lead to South Korean Chella Choi at -6 after her 66..

On a windy day on this Whistle Bear course, U.S. Open champion Brittany Lang who was second here last year and remember she won on Grey Silo in 2012, is T2 -5, 67 as are South Korea’s In Gee Chun, Spain’s Azahara Munoz and Sweden’s Dani Holmqvist.

Other Canadian scores :  Lorie Kane had a 70, one week after she was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame.

Jennifer Ha of Calgary opened with a 71, T53,  Anne Catherine Tanguay (QuĆ©bec City) and JosĆ©e Doyon (St-Georges-de-Beauce, Que.) sit T70, 72.  London, Ont., native Maddie Szeryk  is T97, 73.

Vivian Tsui from Markham, Ont., shot 74, while Samantha Richdale (Kelowna, B.C.) and Jennifer Kirby (Paris, Ont.) carded 75s. Nicole Vandermade (Brantford, Ont.), 76 and Selena Costabile (Thornhill, Ont.) 81.
