The breeze picked up on Saturday, blowing the palm trees at Palm Beach..one of Florida's swankiest resorts..and the scores blew up to match it..
Bay Hill's greens have become so firm players were hard pressed to find their pitch marks.
The two leaders Tommy Fleetwood (76) and Keegan Bradley (75) moved the wrong way, squandering their 4 shot lead, letting the challengers back in.
Rory McIlroy had a great day, his -6 66 see him at -8 in defense of his title, just a shot behind his friend and European Tour member Matthew Fitzpatrick -5 67 -9 who's 54 hole lead of 207 is the highest since Ben Crenshaw 210 in 1993.
Fitzpatrick has 5 European Tour wins, the young Englishman is a former Rookie of the Year. Rory strangely enough has never successfully defended any of his 22 world wide titles
They will be the final pairing with 14 players within 4 shots. While the weather was hot and partly cloudy as predicted the breeze, heat and sun were enough to dry out the greens which will be slick again today.
Rory said " anything around -2 70 on this course the way it is is a heck of a score"
Roger Sloan 74 and Adam Hadwin 68 are T23 at -3.
