Koepka battles the wind, hangs on to win the PGA Championship

PGA Championship final scoreboard https://www.pga.com/events/pgachampionship/leaderboard

Winning a golf tournament is rarely easy, a major more so. Brooks Koepka set scoring records all week on mighty Bethpage Black during this PGA Championship and after a birdie at the 10th on Sunday he stood on the tee at #11 with a 6 shot lead over Dustin Johnson

However Mother Nature had made a late arrival bringing her blustery wind with her.

He proceeded to make 4 straight bogey's while DJ rolled in 2 birdies and suddenly his monumental lead was down to one.

His "walk in the Bethpage park" had become a struggle to make it home.

However everyone else was struggling in the conditions as well, including DJ who proceeded to bogey 15 and 16 giving Koepka back a 3 shot advantage which was just as well when he made another bogey at the 17th.

He gathered himself though, managed a par at the last and signed for a weeks worst +4 74. but still good enough at -8 for a two shot record breaking win, his 4th major in 8 starts, the first guy to ever win back to back US Opens and PGA Championships.

Dustin Johnson was 2nd at the Masters, now again at this PGA Championship. In fact he has now finished 2nd at all 4 majors.

Other notables like Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Matt Kuchar and Adam Scott all had top 10 finishes.

Adam Hadwin T29 72 70 70 73 +5, Corey Connors T64 72 72 76 71 +11 despite leading the field in driving stats after the first round. His putting was nearly last.

Koepka who has honed his magnificent game on courses and in conditions around the world, on the European Challenge Tour before graduating to the European Tour has now come full cycle and at 29 is ranked the #1 player in the world.

Nobody can stop Koepka from making history..Sunday tee times/ scoreboard

PGA Championship leaderboard https://www.pga.com/events/pgachampionship/leaderboard

Sunday tee times https://www.pga.com/events/pgachampionship/tee-times

When he missed a 6 footer for birdie at the first I thought ok, maybe they're not all going in today, then when the back to back bogey's came at 9 and 10 there was a glimmer of hope that somebody was going to make a game of this PGA Championship.

As it turned out nobody except for a powerful young Thai with the improbable name of Jazz Janewattananond made any kind of a charge at Brooks Koepka whose E 70 still leaves him 7 shots clear at -12 with what should be an " 18 hole walk in this Bethpage park" today.

It is the largest final round lead in PGA Championship history and when he pulls it off he will set another record by becoming the first player to win back to back US Open and PGA titles. He will also join Tiger, Jack and Ben Hogan to win 4 majors in 8 starts.

He will be paired with Harold Varner III (-5) today who is one of the chasing pack who can win a spot in the Masters with a top 4 finish. Dustin Johnson  is also T2 at -5 so enjoy watching him go flag hunting today.

Canadian scores: Corey Connors T74 +10, Adam Hadwin T26 +2

Saturday was moving day but nothing changed. Nobody but the brilliant Koepka who took just 128 strokes to play 36 holes has managed to tame a rather soft Bethpage Black.

We haven't seen the likes of this since Tiger in his prime in 2000 so if you're going to be watching this long weekend Sunday, just enjoy, he's making history..

More records for Koepka as he leads PGA Championship by 7 shots

PGA Championship leaderboard https://www.pga.com/events/pgachampionship/leaderboard

Saturday tee-times https://www.pga.com/events/pgachampionship/tee-times

He says he didn't have his "A" game but the way he's putting it barely made any difference. His 63,65 128 total is the lowest ever at at a major after 36 holes and it gives Brooks Koepka a 7 shot lead at -12, another major record.

Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott are closest to him at -5. Dustin Johnson leads a pack of 5 at -4 which includes England's Matt Wallace who put Koepka's performance into perspective, "any score under par around this set up is very good".

The cut fell at +4 and both Corey Connors 72 72 +4 made it as did Adam Hadwin 72 70 E. He is paired with Henrik Stenson today at 10.20am

Tiger didn't make the cut as he shot 73 +5 total. Others like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm also missed the cut. Rory rallied on his back nine and he will be around for the weekend, like everyone else, well back.

Spieth who claims to have sorted out his putting woes will join Koepka in the final pairing today at 2.50pm.. Play begins at 7.50am. Spieth is looking for the career grand slam.

I believe the pack will close on Koepka as he vies to successfully defend his title and win his 4th major. The question is will he give them a chance to catch up. Another mid 60's round today will make Sunday no more than a "walk in the Bethpage park"..

Koepka sets Bethpage Black record 63, leads PGA Championship...live scoring

PGA Championship live scoreboard https://www.pga.com/events/pgachampionship/leaderboard

Friday pairings/ tee times https://www.pga.com/events/pgachampionship/tee-times

He grew up watching Tiger dominate the game and yesterday, paired with his idol and last year's player of the year Francesco Molinari, Brooks Koepka thrashed both of them by 9 shots as he posted a bogey free course record -7 63 while they both struggled to +2 72's.

So dominant was the 3 time major and defending champion he set the record without making a birdie on either of the two par 5's.

The only player close to him was Kiwi, Danny Lee who birdied his final 2 holes for a brilliant -6 64. Tommy Fleetwood flew in from hosting the British Masters in Southport, England to post a -3 67 and sits alone in 3rd.

A group of five are at -2 68 then 8 more at -1 69, including Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth.

Tiger ruined 3 birdies and an eagle with 3 bogey's and 2 doubles for his 72. Rory couldn't buy a putt, making his only birdie on his final hole for his 72.

Both Canadians, Adam Hadwin and Corey Connors also scored + 72's.

The field are out early this morning at 6.45am. Follow my live scoring/ tee time links above.

Finland's Marcus Kinhault wins the Betfred British Masters.. final scoreboard

European Tour Betfred British Masters final leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2019/tournamentid=2019042/leaderboard/index.html#/leaderboard

I am working weekends these days so couldn't post much on this Betfred British Masters hosted by Tommy Fleetwood in Southport, England. It's a solid event and was well attended and had a strong European Tour field.

In the end it was Finland's Marcus Kinhault 65 69 68 70 -16 who outlasted Eddie Pepperall, Robert MacIntyre from Scotland and Matt Wallace all at -15.

Here is the report from europeantour.com.

Marcus Kinhult secured his maiden European Tour title at the 52nd time of asking after producing a birdie-birdie finish to win the Betfred British Masters by a single shot.

There was late drama at Hillside Golf Club on Sunday as Kinhult, Matt Wallace, defending champion Eddie Pepperell and young Scot Robert MacIntyre were locked together at 15 under par when the final group containing overnight leaders Kinhult and Wallace stood on the 18th tee.

With Pepperell and MacIntyre watching on following the conclusion of their rounds, Kinhult coolly rolled in his eight foot birdie putt at the last to sign for a final-round 70 and make his European Tour breakthrough.

PGA Tour AT&T Byron Nelson final leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2019/at-t-byron-nelson/leaderboard.html

We're used to women from South Korea winning on the LPGA Tour but with the ladies on a break right now it was fellow countryman Sung Kang who had the week of his golfing life shooting a final round -4 67 -23 total to win the rain delayed AT&T Byron Nelson by two shots for his first PGA Tour title. Due to earlier rain delays he played 27 holes on Sunday.

He is 31 and has been golfing around the world since 2011 with only one win in 2013 in Korea to show for his trevails.

In a year where several others including Corey Connors have changed their lives with a first win, Kang is no different. He wins $1.4m, 2 years full exemption including the Masters and a spot a this week's PGA Championship at Bethpage amongst many other bonuses.

Speaking of the PGA Championship, Brooks Koepka warmed up for his title defence there with a 4th place finish on Sunday, closing with a -6 65 -20 total.

Roger Sloan made the cut but didn't survive the 2nd cut so he MDF meaning he gets paid but didn't play the 4th round.

Scott Piercy had a remarkable week as well,  didn't make a bogey, hit 60/72 fairways, was 12/12 scrambling and finished T2 69 67 63 64 -21 along with Matt Every.
