It's another picture perfect Friday at the Players Championship in Jacksonville, Florida. Clear blue skies, brilliant sunshine, just a zephyr for a breeze, it's the very reason we snowbirds flock there every winter.
So the scoring is low again, or in Tiger's case was low. Playing the back nine first he was playing like the weather, perfect, with 3 birdies on his card as he stood on the 17th tee, the famous par 3 with the island green. The hole is 146yards today pin, back center.
He pulled his wedge a little, took a few bounces into the pond by the footpath. From the drop zone he hit a sloppy pitch and run which bounced recklessly into the pond left of the pin. Another pitch, 2 putts for an improbable quadruple bogey 7. He is now playing holes 1-9, which are his back nine today at -1.
This is typical of TPC Sawgrass, where just one mistake can lead to a big number. Justin Rose is the #2 ranked player in the world and he took a 7 at the par 4 1st yesterday.
Just like last week at the Honda Championship, Tommy Fleetwood and Keegan Bradley took the first round lead with -7 65's. I'm surprised there weren't more, but as it turned out the breeze got up enough in the afternoon, and the difficult pins protected the course a little more than I expected. The morning rounds have the weather advantage.
Kevin Kisner is taking advantage of his early start -4 through 11 holes and he leads at -8, early in this day. Rory had a solid start -5 67.
69 -3, was a popular score on Thursday, DJ, Jon Rahm, Sergio, Matt Kuchar, Patrick Reed are all on that mark as they start their play today.
Canadians: not a great start for the guys. Nick Taylor +1 73, Corey Conners E 72, Adam Hadwin +4 76.
*( Nick has it going this morning -3 so far through 13 holes)
