PGA Tour : Genesis Championship Tee Times
When you look through the scoreboard for Thursday at this weeks Genesis Invitational, remember it's on Torrey Pines south course, one of the Tour's toughest tests even without the weather.
The wind and rain I talked about in the preview arrived, the rough is soaking and lush, the course playing long and the wind was blowing at 25mph, as Collin Morikawa said "hitting fairways is crucial early this week, we can't overpower this course in these conditions"
As a result only 13 players broke par 72, a late charge, 2 birdies and an eagle in his last 4 holes gave American Denny McCarthy a slim 1 shot lead with -4 68.
Ireland's Seamus Power grew up in the wind and rain, he is T2 -3 69 along with Patrick Rodgers, they are the only others in the 60's.
Scottie Scheffler is in at -2 70 with Wynham Clark, then a group of 7 at -1 71.
Rory is in the thick of it again after his win last week at Pebble Beach with T14 E
WEATHER : This limited field signature event is tightly bunched, the rain is gone, the weekend will be much calmer, however today the wind has switched slightly from NE to the E and will be significant if not serious at 16mph and the course is still soft and wet as opposed dry and fast.
Canadians
Corey Conners T14 E 72
Taylor Pendrith, Mac Hughes, Nick Taylor all T25 +2 74
Adam Hadwin had a round he'd like to forget 72nd +11 83.
So I expect scoring to improve today. however big numbers are lurking with this deep, lush, wet rough and the E wind. As the course dries out and the wind dies down, it will be much more playable on the weekend, so the contenders will need to stay in touch today.
The $20,000,000 purse should help keep their focus !
