Windy day sets scores soaring at Valero Texas Open
Round 2 at the Valero Texas Open was one of the TOUR's toughest day in years (pgatour.com)
Aussie Brendan Steele carried the lead before double-bogeying on the par-4 15th, then blew a chance to reclaim it by missing a 6-footer for birdie on the final hole, keeping him in a rare seven-way tie atop the leaderboard at 3 under Friday.
That is tied for the second-most crowded leaderboard in the PGA TOUR after 36 holes since 1970. Strong winds prevented anyone from breaking out, and Friday's average round of 75.289 was the highest on the TOUR since the 2008 British Open.
"I got pretty beat up out there," Steele said. "I think we all kind of did."
After missing what would've been his fifth birdie, Steele tapped in No. 18 to finish at par-72. He shared the lead with Geoff Ogilvy (72), Rich Beem (70), Kevin Sutherland (70), Charley Hoffman (73), Brandt Snedeker (72), and Kevin Chappell (73).
A day that began with 5 under leading the pace was undone by winds that whipped higher than 30 mph. Players helplessly watched tee shots sail into the woods, and just 13 players shot under par Friday after there 50 sub-par scores in the opening round.
Defending champion Adam Scott followed his opening-round 68 with a 74. But on a day like this, 2 over was good enough to leave the Masters runner-up and three others just a stroke back.
"I can't imagine anyone really running away with it," Scott said.
A seven-way tie after 36 holes hasn't been seen on the TOUR since the 1977 Westchester. The record was an eight-way tie at the 2001 Greater Hartford Open.
"It was blowing when it was dark this morning. It's more like windy Texas days," Ogilvy said. "Happy to get out of it with no damage done and still looking forward to the weekend."
Beem, playing the TOUR on a major medical extension, had not only a share of the lead but made his first cut since the Shell Houston Open last year. He missed the next six months after undergoing surgery for a bulging disc in his neck.
Beem, whose home in Austin is just north of TPC San Antonio, bogeyed just one hole and finished his final nine shooting par or better.
"This golf course kind of captures your attention," Beem said. "You have to focus on every single hole and every single shot."
The cut was set at 4-over 148, tied for second highest on the TOUR this season. Among those cut was Kevin Na, who in the windy conditions never stood a chance at overcoming his 16-stroke meltdown on No. 9 in the first round. He finished at 13 over.

After another 3hr 30min rain delay a very soggy round 3 has resumed this morning and here is the latest leaderboard as of 5.30am

Kevin Na's 16 not a PGA tour record !!
Kevin Na warmed the heart of we duffers around the world. He hacked and shanked and thinned and whiffed his way to a 16 on one hole at the Valero Texas Open..

Na watched his first shot on No. 9 veer badly off course. His next stroke wasn't any better. Or the next one. Or the 11 after that.Or maybe it was 12. Thirteen? Na himself couldn't keep track.
"I got done with the hole and I said (to my caddie), 'I think I made somewhere between a 10 and a 15," Na said. "But I think it's close to a 15."..It was 16.
Na birdied No. 18 to go 4 under on the other 17 holes. But so dreadful was No. 9 that the score was adjusted three times -- first a 14, then 15, and finally, following a lengthy review of a video replay before signing his scorecard, it changed yet again to a 16.
The worst single-hole score at a PGA TOUR event belongs to John Daly, who had an 18 on the par-5 sixth hole at Bay Hill in 1998. Ray Ainsley took 19 shots on the par-4 16th hole at Cherry Hills in the 1938 U.S. Open
Even Na was smiling by the time he tapped in a 6-footer on the green..."It's all a blur," Na said.
Here's what he does remember: his tee shot that sailed into the woods, where Na eventually found the ball. He called it unplayable and teed off again, but not with better results. Along the way he whiffed one stroke, ricocheted another off his inner thigh, tried two shots left-handed and watched the ball barely sputter forward on another stroke.All while still in the woods.
"One bad hole can basically shoot you out of the tournament," Na said. "That's what I just did."
J.J. Henry and former Open champion Stewart Cink share the Valero Texas Open lead after shooting first-round 5-under 67sAdam Scott, riding the momentum of his runner-up finish at the Masters, began his defense of last year's Texas Open championship strong and was a stroke back. The Australian shot a 68 and was tied with Charley Hoffman, Jhonattan Vegas, Vaughn Taylor and Kevin Chappell.

McIlroy grabs share of the lead in Malaysia..Play suspended for the day
Rory McIlroy is one of the "early's" today at the Maybank Malaysian Open and it appears he has slept off the jet lag as he went out in 31 with 5 birdies (played back nine first) and came back in 33 with 3 more, a spotless -8 64 that has him tied with first round leader Alexander Noren 64,69 -11.
England's Simon Dyson also shot 64 and is 3rd right now at -10, half way through the 2nd round..

Appearance money is the name of the game for world stars..
If you were wondering what Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy and Charl Schwartzel, (the latter pair are horribly jet lagged) have flown 30 hours from Augusta Georgia, through customs, out of New York through customs, out of London and through customs into Kuala Lumpur where it is about 110 degrees of heat and humidity in the shade, it is in part to support the European tour, it may because they are going to play in China for the next two weeks... but in reality it is because the sponsor Maybank has offered each of them a huge appearance fee just to show up.
Appearance money is forbidden on the PGA tour, but is has been the name of the game in Europe and Australasia from the get go.
Remember Sam Snead complaining that it cost him more to sail to the UK and stay, than the 50 guineas that were on offer for the first prize he won in 1946, and although Walter Hagen went over and won it 4 times in the '20's, it wasn't really until Arnie went over and came 2nd in '60 and won in '61 that Americans started to play the Open in numbers. Of course trans Atlantic flights were in vogue and television coverage had brought the game to the masses..
So sponsors have always offered the games biggest stars money to come and grace their event. The amount is never published, although Tiger reportedly got $2m from JB Were in '09 at the Aussie Masters, and the rank and file don't complain because the stars drive their tours..
Leading the event is Sweden's Alexander Noren at -8 64 and he isn't getting a krona to appear !!
Rory sleep walked his way through -3 69, as did Oosthuizen, and Kaymer is at -2. Schwartzel is at +1 73 and still smiling... not just because of the green jacket he is showing off.. but because of the new appearance fees he is getting because he is wearing it !!
