Going into today the 16 players separated by five shots on the BMW leaderboard had won 29 majors and 21 World Golf Championships, and four of them have been No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking over the last decade

PGA Tour

Rory McIlroy fine-tuned his swing and missed only one fairway at soggy Crooked Stick, powering his way to a 5-under 67 to win his second straight FedExCup Playoffs event. They followed a record win at the PGA Championship, giving him three wins in his last four starts to establish himself as the dominant player in golf. He faced the strongest collection of contenders at any golf tournament this year and it was no contest.

He became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2009 to win in consecutive weeks on the PGA TOUR, and with his sixth career tour win, he joined Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win that many at age 23.

I don't think I'm quite there yet," McIlroy said. "But I'm getting to that stage where I'm thinking, `This is what I should be doing. I should be lifting a trophy at the end of the week.' It's been great. The last four, five weeks have been incredible, some of the best golf that I've ever played. I'm going to try and keep the run going for as long as possible."

McIlroy finished on 20-under 268 and earned $1.44 million, pushing him to over $7.8 million for the season to effectively lock up the money title and all but assured being voted by his peers as the PGA TOUR Player of the Year.
He has four wins on TOUR this year -- one more than Woods -- and that includes a record eight-shot win at the PGA Championship.

He is the No. 1 seed going into the FedExCup finale in two weeks at East Lake, but any of the top five seeds can win the TOUR Championship and capture the FedExCup with its $10 million bonus. The other four seeds are Woods, Nick Watney, Mickelson and Brandt Snedeker

Woods was never seriously in the mix. Five shots behind with seven holes to play, he made three late birdies and shot 68 to tie for fourth with Robert Garrigus (69).

Rory's Ryder Cup colleague Lee Westwood 69 and Phil Mickelson were 2 shots back at -16...

Graham DeLaet  T35 at 283 ,  64 70 74 75 -5 finished at 53  David Hearn is T65 292, 69 70 77 76 +4 and finished at 68 so both are done as far as the playoffs are concerned..

Remember only the top 30 go through to the Tour Championship at East Lake in 2 weeks..

European Tour

Hanson’s heroics seals KLM Open

Peter Hanson ended a difficult personal week on a dramatic high note after holing a 30ft eagle putt on the last hole to win the KLM Open in his last tournament before The Ryder Cup.

The Swede came close to withdrawing from the event at Hilversumsche GC after his one year old son Tim was hospitalised with a respiratory virus on Friday.

But with his son’s condition improving, his decision to continue paid off as he secured a fifth European Tour title with a stunning climax, closing with a 67 to finish on 14 under par,  two shots clear of long-time leader Pablo Larrazábal and last week’s Omega European Masters champion Richie Ramsay.

European Senior Tour

INVALUABLE PRICE SECURES DOMINANT PON SENIOR OPEN VICTORY

Terry Price completed the most dominant victory of the 2012 European Senior Tour season with a final round of five under par 67 to record a stunning six-shot win over Marc Farry and Barry Lane at Winston Golf.

The Australian was simply unstoppable during the final round over the Winston Open course as he secured the first Senior Tour victory of his career and the first place cheque for €60,000.

With some of the Senior Tour’s biggest names – among them Lane and Bernhard Langer – starting their own final rounds with a bang, Price could have been forgiven for taking it easy and feeling his way into the final round, which he had begun with a three-stroke cushion.

But the 51 year old went on the attack from the word go, birdieing two of his first three holes to keep plenty of daylight between himself and the chasing pack

European Challenge Tour

Kaleka clinches second title in Russia

Alexandre Kaleka claimed his second European Challenge Tour title as his two under par round of 70 was enough to overcome Alessandro Tadini after a thrilling battle in the final day of the M2M Russian Challenge Cup.

The Frenchman began the day two shots off the lead held by Alessandro Tadini and, on an intriguing day where the lead was exchanged back and forth, he battled his way back from a double bogey at the 15th hole to claim his first title in three years.

The win moved him from 12th in the Challenge Tour Rankings to fifth and means he is now almost certain to earn a card for The European Tour next season.

Kaleka put the pressure on Tadini early on with birdies at the fourth and seventh holes, which him to the turn in two under par, but Tadini didn’t look like budging and also played the front nine in two under par to maintain his lead.

It all began to unravel for the Italian, however, and back to back bogeys at the 11th and 12th holes followed by another at the 14th put Kaleka into the lead.

(Gananoque, Ont., - September 9, 2012) - Eugene Wong of North Vancouver, BC continued his hot streak Sunday, claiming the 2012 Great Waterway Classic just two weeks after his first career professional victory at the Canadian Tour Championship and a week after capturing the Vancouver Open on the Vancouver Golf Tour.

Wong fired a final round 6-under 65 to edge two-time Canadian Tour winner Daniel Im of La Mirada, CA and claim his second consecutive Canadian Tour win by a single shot. The 21-year old shot four-under 32 on the final nine, and birdied the 16th to secure the victory.

New putter, playoff beard. DeLaet leads BMW Championship

Graham DeLaet and David Hearn are paired together right behind the juggernaut group of Tiger, Rory and the throw in Nick Watney...

As good Canadian guys do during the playoffs they showed up on the first tee with their playoff beards well underway and I'm not so sure it was the beards as much as it was the new $150.00 long putter Graham bought from the pro shop bin in Boise.

He used it to great effect in particular with a 40 foot eagle bomb on his final hole (9th) on his way to an -8 64, tied for the lead with Rory McIlroy, BoVan Pelt and Webb Simpson..

Hearn had a -3 69 and is T29 on a day when 60 of the 70 players were below par as the field was allowed to lift clean and place after torrential rain on Wednesday..

McIlroy, flawless with his irons, birdied his last two holes for an 8-under 64 and was part of a four-way tie for the lead with Indiana native Bo Van Pelt, U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and Graham DeLaet, the Canadian who is quietly becoming the Cinderella of these FedExCup Playoffs.
Just three days after McIlroy won the Deutsche Bank Championship, he looked just as impressive in the opening round at Crooked Stick.
"He hits it great, putts it great and top of that, he's just a really nice kid," Woods said in some of his strongest praise ever for another player. "The game of golf is in great hands with him, and he's here to stay."
Woods, who finished two shots behind Monday in Boston, isn't going away quietly. He was only sharp when it came to scoring, making enough birdies to stay in the game, including a 30-foot chip-in on his last hole for a 65

Rory the story of the Fed Ex Cup

Rory beat Louis by a shot, Tiger by 2 as he moves into 1st place in the Fed Ex Cup with 2 events to play.

pgatour.com   On a leaderboard packed with some of the biggest names in golf -- McIlroy, Oosthuizen, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson -- the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland took a giant leap toward establishing himself as the best in the game.

With four birdies in six holes at the start, and limiting the damage from his mistakes at the end, McIlroy closed with a 4-under 67 for a one-shot victory over Oosthuizen, joining Woods as the only three-time winners this year on the PGA TOUR

McIlroy goes to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup. And with one of his wins being the PGA Championship, that might be enough for his peers to vote him PGA TOUR Player of the Year. He also has a comfortable gap in the Official World Gold Ranking, and could be tough to catch the rest of the year unless Woods were to win the next two FedExCup events..

Phil Mickelson also had a 66 and tied for fourth, along with Dustin Johnson, who had a 70 and likely played his way onto the Ryder Cup team. Brandt Snedeker made a strong case for a captain's pick with a 65-67 weekend to finish sixth.  Davis Love III will announce his four picks Tuesday morning in New York

Both David Hearn 75 -5 total T26, 58th place and Graham DeLaet MC but in 60th place move on to round 3 where the top 70 compete at Crooked Stick in Alabama...

Rory is getting in great shape to win the Fed Ex and Race To Dubai not to mention his leading role in the European Team at the Ryder Cup... Tiger of course will continue to get all the headlines, no matter how sensational Rory's year will be..  Sad but true..

Weekend warriors at St Joseph's hospital, European Tour results

Monday morning of this beautiful Labour Day weekend weather wise. It has really been a fitting send off to summer down by the Toronto lakeshore capped by a magnificent airshow with a clear blue sky and Lake Ontario as the backdrop.

I am heading out to get a workout in then back over for day 3 at St Jo's tending to Dad who is slowly getting better, steadier it seems.

All the full time hospital staff return from their holiday's Tuesday,boy if it wasn't for my sisters and I being there 24/7 this weekend, God only knows what state he would be in and I must say the skeleton crew that are working do the best they can, but are simply overwhelmed when a crisis occurs as it does daily, especially in Dad's wing where Dementia sets in at sundown every day. Old folks just keep ringing that bell non-stop calling for help for the most trivial of matters to the most serious..

It is a thankless job and I hope some re-enforcements arrive today as the breaking point isn't far below the surface, or worse as I observe, they just switch off, stop caring, put in their hours and get out. Some of these women, and most are women take 2 hours by bus to get in by 7am and 2 hours to get home after working 12 hour shifts. Up at 4am, on the buses at 5, into work and on the floor at 7am, off at 7pm, back on the buses, home by 9... No time for anything, bed by 10 and back up at 4 !!  All for what I assume is a paltry wage

I am embarrassed I held any ill will towards their lack of care for my Dad, it is the system, not them. They are superwomen to carry on this grind for their existence and their families day in a day out.

The doctors and nurses and specialists are away up the food chain from these weekend warriors at St Jo's..

EUROPEAN TOUR

Rampant Ramsay king for the day in Crans

Richie Ramsay cruised to his second European Tour title at the Omega European Masters with a display as stunning as the scenery in the Swiss Alps.

The former US Amateur Champion, who opened his European Tour account at the 2010 South African Open Championship, earned €350,000 to climb to into the top 20 of The Race to Dubai after romping to a four shot victory at Crans-sur-Sierre.  

Ramsay started the day with a one shot lead over his compatriot Paul Lawrie and England’s Danny Willett, but that advantage was swiftly wiped out when Lawrie eagled the first hole.

But Ramsay responded with a birdie of his own, and made four further gains to race to the turn in just 31 strokes.

A brief wobble on the 13th hole was swiftly rectified when he holed his wedge for an eagle at the next, allowing the man from Aberdeen ample breathing space, and he eventually signed for a round of 66 for a 16 under par aggregate winning total.

He said: “Since winning in South Africa I’ve made a lot of tough decisions about my career, and today was vindication of that. It’s an incredible place to play golf, so to win here is very special. You can get caught up looking at the scenery, but I knew I had a job to do here today.
“I had a clear goal in mind, and all the way round I was imagining I was playing with my best mates from back home. I performed unbelievably well against two of the most in-form players about. Paul’s playing the golf of his life, and Danny’s one of the best young players on the Tour. So it was always going to be difficult, but I managed to pull it off.”

Second place was shared on 12 under par by Sweden’s Fredrik Andersson Hed, Australian Marcus Fraser, Frenchman Romain Wattel (all 66) and Willett (69).



EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR

Smyth seals superb Woburn win

Irishman Des Smyth won his second Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters title in three years with a superb four under par 68 in the final round at Woburn Golf Club.

The 59 year old from Drogheda, who triumphed here in 2010, finished with a ten under par total in front of record crowds, one shot clear of Australian Peter Fowler and two in front of Englishman Mark James, the pair both signing for 67.

Smyth spend much of the day level at the top with Spaniard Juan Quiros, but the 11th hole proved pivotal, with the Irishman birdieing and the Spaniard bogeying to open up a two shot gap, and Quiros ultimately had to settle for a 73 and a share of fifth place.

In perspective...

I am spending Saturday and Sunday of this gorgeous Labour Day weekend in a hospital room at St Joseph's taking shifts along with my sisters Kathryn and Alison standing watch over our 92 yr old Dad, Bill who took a fall on Thursday afternoon and really beat himself up..had a mild heart attack

He is black and blue, and much more.. Dementia is always lurking, especially when the sun goes down making him a tough old guy to deal with for the skeleton crew the hospital has on offer as most are on holiday as the summer of 2012 winds down..These days folks, hospitals simply rely on family being present constantly to care for the elderly.. Like life, if you get lucky and get one who really cares about nursing it's a bonus.. Most just get on with their shifts hoping for as little crisis as possible. There are precious few actual nurses, mostly all administraters, maintenance or care givers who are from all over the world,speaking in many tongues, working 12 hour shifts, away down the pecking order from all the glamour you see with the doctors and nurses on ER... Dad had one hurried visit from a doctor ALL day yesterday, I never saw the nurse on duty, and the so called shift supervisor really only came in to see me when I had lodged a complaint with a doctor who actually went to the hospital manager, over her head, and she was forced to file an incident report to explain a case of extreme incompetence, worse, lack of caring..

Minutes, hours, days crawl by at an excrutiatingly slow pace.no TV no radio,.there is a hospital routine, barely functioning over this Labour Day weekend.. All is on hold til the full timers, the Doc's, nurses, physio's, social workers, specialists arrive back to work on Tuesday and plug back in to the grind, eventually getting around to our dear old Dad, so they can sign off on him, cover the hospital's ass and eventually wheel him to the door, back to us until he falls again.. God forbid...

The Air Show at the Ex is spectacular just minutes down the Lakeshore from St Jo's and rages away overhead, the Jays lost on the last play of the game 5-4 to the Rays further along at the Skydome (Rogers Center now), Dad would enjoy them both if he had a clue they were on...

I read Rory leads by a shot from Louis O with Tiger another back.... sorry I can't tell you more..

It doesn't really seem to matter this weekend as we try and get Dad home and wonder how we will be able to manage him so he continues to live with dignity and pleasure in his dotage..

It's 430am, time to get on with the morning chores and routine before driving back to spell my sister in Dad's room.. For this weekend at least you probably know more about what's going on in the golf world than I do..

When  I look at Dad it really doesn't seem to matter... It puts it all in perspective..

What a year for Chip Lutz...Final scores Canadian Men's Senior Championship

American Chip Lutz won the Canadian Men's Senior Championship on Friday in Mirabel Quebec, successfully defending his title..

Earlier this year Lutz claimed his second consecutive British Seniors Open Amateur Championship title and also captured a Silver Medal as top amateur at the 2012 British Senior Open Championship

CHIP LUTZ WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE CANADIAN MEN’S SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

- Pennsylvania native earns exemption into 2012 USGA Senior Amateur Championship -

Mirabel, Que. (Golf Canada) – Chip Lutz of Reading, Penn. carded a final-round 4-under par 68 on Friday to capture the 2012 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship at Golf Griffon des Sources in Mirabel, Que.

Lutz, who started the day two shots back of leader Ian Harris of Bloomfield, Mich., birdied four of his last five holes, en route to besting Harris by five strokes for the title. Lutz finished with a four-day tally of 1-under par 287, while Harris posted a score of 4-over par 292 to place second.

Lutz’s final-round score of 4-under par 68 matched a competitive course record that was set earlier in the day by four-time Canadian Men’s Senior Championship winner, Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. Cooke finished third with a four-day tally of 7-over par 295.

“It's just tremendous for me to accomplish this,” said Lutz, who earlier this year claimed his second consecutive British Seniors Open Amateur Championship title and also captured a Silver Medal as top amateur at the 2012 British Senior Open Championship. “I was successful in defending the British earlier this year, and to do it in Canada and back this one up is something special. I'm thrilled beyond words.”

Reflecting on a stellar final round, Lutz was particularly proud of the manner in which he was able to adhere to his game plan.

“Today, it finally came together on the final nine holes,” said Lutz, who earned a champion’s exemption into the 2012 USGA Senior Amateur Championship with the win. “I tried to stay patient and stay with my game plan and I tried to remain close in terms of the competition coming down the stretch. I felt if I was able to do that, then I may have some good fortune. That was the key.”

With the victory, Lutz became the first competitor to capture back-to-back Canadian Men’s Senior Championship titles since Cooke accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009.

Greg Wilson of Vaudreuil, Que. was fourth at 8-over par 296, while David Schultz of Calgary and Frank Van Dornick of Camrose, Alta. finished T5 at 10-over par 298
