The PGA Tour Champions returns to action this week, and they are at the venerable Firestone CC in Akron Ohio, with it's tight tree lined fairways.
The first pairing right off the bat this morning off the 1st tee at 9.30am Ernie Els, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Fred Couples, how's that for starters !
Two groups behind them at 9.50am Mike Weir makes his 2nd start on the senior circuit, paired with Bernhard Langer and David Toms who doesn't play that much anymore.
The field is paired in three's off split tees.
David Morland IV is the 2nd Canadian, he's off the 1st at 10.40am with Robert Karlsson and Tom Gillis
Stephen Ames tweeted yesterday he's not fit yet after his extended COVID break in the Turks and Caicos, and he is in the 2nd last pairing off the 10th at 11.25am with Ken Tanigawa and Kevin Sutherland.

It's back to the" regular" season on the PGA Tour if there is such a thing anymore, as the field moves from the PGA Championship across America the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro NC at the par 70 Sedgefield CC where J.T Boston 65 65 66 62 -22 edged Webb Simpson for his first Tour win.
Mac Hughes and Corey Connors both T22 at -13 last year and Mike Weir recovered from an opening 76 to make the cut, but finished last. This year David Hearn, Michael Gligic, Roger Sloan and Corey Connors make up the Canadian contingent.
The "featured" pairing of Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose are off #10 at 7.50am. Guys like Tommy Fleetwood and Danny Willett who have put up with the 14 day quarantine from England are sticking around to play, Sergio Garcia is in the field and I'm watching out for Paul Casey who narrowly lost last week and T13 here last year.
Carolina has been hit hard by the COVID return, and on Sunday morning North Carolina survived a 5.1 magnitude earthquake, the worst since 1916. It was felt the most along it's Virginia border to the north.
Greensboro is further south from the epi centre but still was affected by the shock waves.
Weather : It does not look good, warm muggy with rain and T'Storms forecast for every day, especially Saturday.

Morikawa and the young guns steal the spotlight at the PGA Championship... final scoreboard

A small group of officials, media assembled beside the 18th green, to politely applaud young Californian, Collin Morikawa hoist then bobble the PGA Championship, Wanamaker Trophy, almost as big as he is, after his stunning round of -6 64, on top of his stunning round of -5 65 on Saturday for a weekend 129 strokes and -13 total took the spotlight away from the big boys, in particular Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson of whom reams had been written, countless hours had been opined without the pay off most predicted.
DJ didn't disgrace himself at all, T2 69 67 65 68 -11, he was just beaten by the wirey little 23 year old kid who was in school just over a year ago and was in just his 2nd major. So it goes in golf now. Young guys from all over the world have many more places to play than even veteran 43 year old Paul Casey T2 (68 67 68 66 -11) did, not just in America, but in Europe, Asia, India, Korea, Japan, China and down under in Australia and New Zealand. There, can play competitive golf, unlike just 25 years ago.
A word of praise for Paul Casey, who was tied for the lead standing on the 17th tee, until he watched Morikawa's shot of the day as he drove the 294 yard 16th and made the eagle to clinch the title. It was his best shot of winning a major, the quiet Englishman, now like so many living in Florida, is as nice a guy as you could meet.
Koepka, who chose to play in Europe after college to hone his game and in his words "grow up" before returning to the PGA Tour had a bad front nine with 4 bogey's 39 to fall out of the race, finally T29 with a 74, and is taking some heat from scribes for prodding DJ on Saturday with "I've got 4 he's got 1" which is golf's version of trash talking.
There was Morikawa's southern California college rival, Matthew Wolff with the funky swing, right behind him T4 69 68 68 65 -10, surely these two and Jon Rahm T13, Haotong Li T17 -6 and Scottie Scheffler T4 -10 and all the other young stars, Si Woo Kim, T13, Daniel Berger T13, Cameron Champ T10, Xander Schauffele T10, Byeong Hun An T22 just to name a few will make it difficult for any one player to dominate the way Jack and Arnie and Lee did, or Norman, or Faldo, or of course Tiger.
In the eerie quiet of Harding Park, it was an exciting Sunday afternoon, 10 players shared the lead at some point. It's hard to get excited about golf, or any other sports really, who's only spectators are cardboard cut outs, however as I said yesterday, there were so many storylines on Sunday, and like a good mystery movie we didn't know the outcome until the end.

DJ leads, 12 players within 3 shots Sunday at PGA Championship.. Live scoreboard / tee times

Yesterday there were 36 International players who made the cut of top 70 and ties, same today, except only 4 are in contention, within 12 shots of the lead held by Dustin Johnson at -9 after his 8 birdie 65.
Veteran Englishmen Paul Casey is quietly 68,67,68 -7, Justin Rose 66 68 70 -6 as is Tommy Fleetwood 70 64 70 and from Australia Jason Day 65 69 70.
I couldn't keep track of the lead yesterday, I think 8 guys were in it or had a share, before DJ came out on top. Walter Hagen won 4 in a row in the 20's, it hasn't happened since so Koepka at -7 has a chance for three, despite 3 consecutive bogey's late in his 69 yesterday.
Rookie American Scottie Scheffler was on the Korn Ferry Tour last year, but is having a hell of a week 66 71 65 -8, Cameron Champ can't even use his enormous power and length on Harding Park is also -8, 71 64 67.
Then consider another young stud Collin Morikawa at -7 69 69 65, and Bryson DeChambeau with all his young bluster at -6 68 70 66, and Tony Finau who has done everything but win since COVID, also -6 67 70 67, and Daniel Berger -6 67 67 70.
So don't ask me to pick the winner, anyone of these guys are perfectly capable but I do believe the champion will come from these twelve. Guys like Haotong Li, yesterday's leader now at -5 could shoot -6 64 today and still be at -11, and you have to think one of the twelve will get to -12 at least.
Canadians Adam Hadwin 68 71 70 -1 is off at 1030am (pst) with American Denny McCarthy while Mac Hughes 73 68 69 E is at 1010am with Aussie Cameron Smith.

The cut fell at +1 late on Friday night allowing the top 70 and ties into the field starting this morning at Harding Park for this PGA Championship.
Thirty-six of them including Mac Hughes 73,68 +1 and Adam Hadwin 68 71 -1 are not from the USA, led by an extremely talented young 25 year old Chinese star Haotong Li 67 65 -8, unknown in America, but a two time winner on the European Tour at the highest level, the Volvo China Open, and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in 2018, beating Rory McIlroy. He was also 3rd at the Open in 2017.
I've watched Haotong over the years, and as Adam Scott, his Presidents Cup team mate, who is also playing this weekend says "He's usually all guns blazing" This week he leads the field in GIR with over 80% accuracy.
Canadians : Corey Connors and Nick Taylor have missed the cut, however Mac Hughes recovered from an opening 73, with -4 68 +1 and Adam Hadwin at -1 is one of 43 players within 7 shots of the lead.
So the weekend, bulging with storylines, none bigger than Brooks Koepka 66,68 leading a pack at -6, looking to become the 3rd man in history to win 3 consecutive PGA Championships. He has a bad hip, requiring on course physio yesterday.

Canadian scoring, Friday scoreboard/ tee times at PGA Championship

With another cool (19*c) blustery day in the forecast at Harding Park, for the PGA Championship, it's unlikely the field scoring average will be much different from Thursday's (http://www.espn.com/golf/stats/hole) so the projected cut is at +2 with round 2 now under way.
Adam Hadwin got off to a great start yesterday, holing his 2nd shot on the first for a rare eagle two and he made that stand up with 8 pars in a row, out in 33. He birdied the par 5 10th, added another mixed with bogey's at 15 and 18 for 35 coming in and a nice -2 68 T20.
Corey Connors is a shot behind with -1 69. He had 2 birdies and 2 bogey's starting at #10 for 35, then 8 pars and a birdie for 34 coming in.
Mac Hughes has some work to do after an opening +3 73. Starting on 10 he made 3 bogey's mixed with 2 birdies for +1 36, then struggled with 4 bogey's and 2 birdies for 37.
Nick Taylor shot +6 76. He also began on 10, and had 3 bogey's and a double, with 1 birdie for 39, then 2 bogey's and 7 pars for 37 and his 76.
Hadwin is early in his 2nd round as I post this, Nick Taylor is off at 12.41, Connors 2.31, Hughes 2.37, all times are local (PST)

When I was asked who I liked at this weeks PGA Championship, I had no hesitation picking a guy I'd never even included in a gazillion pool sheets, until this year, especially since the COVID return.
I've never played Harding Park, but when I watched all the previews, it is clear that keeping the ball on the short grass off the tee is the key to success on these narrow fairways, with lush 4" rough for the first cut.
Not many on Tour right now, do that better than Brendon Todd. He is 3rd in Driving accuracy with 72.28%, and is 4th in distance from the edge of the fairway at 18'9", and while he only averages 280 yards he is very straight.
To go with that he is full of confidence with his putter, 12th on tour averaging 28.1 putts per round and that would be lower but if you've been watching recently, his achilles heel has been the 4th round, where he is ranked 138th.
Since the Travelers in late June he has been leading or in contention there, as well as at the Rocket Mortgage, the Memorial, and the WGC St. Jude's until Sunday's where he shot 75 76 73 75 respectively, He has had the 54 hole lead 10 times this season T1 on tour and has 10 rounds of 65 or lower, again tied for the lead on tour.
Watching the excruciating early ESPN coverage on Thursday where they only cover one "feature" group, with 3/4 commentators left to over analyze every shot, speculate on every thought, keeping it in the fairway was a big problem for Jordan Spieth (73) and Justin Rose (66) who did a remarkable job of scrambling, making putt after par saving putt on 5 of his first 6 holes after chopping out of the rough.
Todd's best PGA Championship finish is 73rd, years ago,but the way he is playing these days, I'm not going out on a limb to say this week will be better, possibly much better come Sunday evening.
