Players out early to complete 1st rounds at Investec South African Open.....

DP World Tour : Investec South African Open Leaderboard

Darren Fichardt made two birdies as play resumed this morning at the weather-affected Investec South African Open Championship to open up a two-shot lead after round one at the soggy Durban Country Club.

Darren Fichardt

The first round on Thursday was delayed by three hours after heavy rain on Tuesday night led to areas of the course being submerged.

A mammoth effort from greenkeeping staff saw play get under way at 09:20 local time but Fichardt still had four holes to complete when the hooter sounded to end play due to darkness.

At that point he was in a share of the lead with England's Sam Bairstow and Swede Fredrik From, both of whom had completed their rounds of -7 65, but when he got back on the course at 08.00 he birdied the 16th and last to jump out into a two-shot lead at -9

Branden Grace, Keith Horne and Marcel Siem all made moves up the leaderboard in completing their rounds to join Bairstow and From at -7, one clear of Todd Clements, Haotong Li, Shaun Norris, John Parry, Jayden Schaper, Shubhankar Sharma and Richie Ramsay all -6.

The last of Fichardt's five DP World Tour wins came at this event in 2017 but since then he has twice had to come through the Qualifying School, although a runner-up finish here and top 100 placing on the Race to Dubai Rankings last season showed he can still mix it with the young guns as he approaches his 50th birthday.

There is more unsettled weather in the forecast, especially for Sunday.

edit**** Canada's Aaron Cockerill made four birdies in 5 holes to begin his round then settled in with pars, just 1 bogey for -3 69 and with round 2 now underway that is where the cut is projected to fall.

Sam Bairstow, Fredrik From and Darren Fichardt lead as weather-delayed first round suspended

The first round was delayed by three hours after heavy rain at Durban Country Club on Tuesday night led to areas of the course being submerged.

A mammoth effort from greenkeeping staff saw play get under way at 09:20 local time, with morning starters Bairstow and From signing for superb -7 65's to share the lead with the charging Fichardt at the end of the day.

England's Bairstow carded eight birdies and a solitary bogey. The highlight of his round was an enormous birdie putt on the par-four fifth.

Swede From, who has plenty of experience of playing in South Africa on the Sunshine Tour, made two eagles, four birdies and one bogey, while home favourite Fichardt birdied seven of his first 14 holes before play was suspended due to darkness at 18.20.

The later starters will return to the course at 08.00 on Friday to complete their opening rounds.

Solid start for Cockerill start at soggy South African Open...rd1 results

DP World Tour: Investec South African Open ..Leaderboard

There would be no golf report here today about this version of the South African Open if not for the architects who rebuilt the Durban GC in 2023 to improve drainage in part, and to the tireless efforts of the grounds crew who worked all through the dark night with pumps and shovels and rakes to even allow any play at all, after a 3 hour delay this morning.

This course was badly flooded, seen above before the rebuild.

One picture of the 16th fairway this year, completely under 7 feet of water after torrential rainfall being playable today is simply improbable.

Its doubtful round 1 will be completed today with the clubhouse leaders at -7 65, and there is rain in the rest of the forecast.

However Aaron Cockerill who missed the cut in Kenya last week got off to a great start with 4 birdies in 5 holes beginning on the 10th tee to go out bogey free in -4 32. He came back in with pars except for a bogey 5 on the par4 5th for 37 and his -3 69 has him T19.

Greenkeeping staff at Durban Country Club have been praised for their “inspiring team effort” in overcoming inclement weather to get the course playable at the Investec South African Open Championship.

Heavy rainfall from Tuesday night led to areas of the course being submerged by water, with Wednesday’s pre-tournament Pro-Am called off, before a three-hour delay to the first round was announced.

“On behalf of the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour and all our professionals, we are extremely grateful to all the parties for their outstanding effort to enable us to start the first round today,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour.

“They worked through the night and against the odds, and what they achieved is nothing short of remarkable. We are truly grateful for such an inspiring team effort. Thank you.”

The championship, which has a new date in the schedule, is returning to a revamped Durban Country Club for the first time since 2010.

In 2023-2024, the course closed for 10 months to construct renovations and drainage enhancements including the addition of a burn that serves as a drainage channel. The championship, which has a new date in the schedule, is returning to a revamped Durban Country Club for the first time since 2010.

Weather delay Investec South African Championship.. Leaderboard /TEE Times

DP World Tour : South African Championship Leaderboard  Tee Times

The 1st round of the Investec South African Championship will  be delayed due to heavy rain and a water logged Durban CC. Durban is 7 hours ahead of EST. It is 10pm Wednesday night there as I post this.

There is rain in the forecast on and off all week. click Weather for all the details in particular Sunday which is forecast as the worst.

So we can expect the Durban CC to play long, very soft likely with preferred lies.

Aaron Cockerill as usual is the lone Canadian and his scheduled time was 1120hrs local which will be pushed back to 1420hrs at least, and he will be off the 10th tee.

South African Dean Burmester who spends most of his season playing LIV is the defending champion.

"It's obviously one as a South African that I've always wanted to win. To be involved in this tournament and to win it, with a bank that used to sponsor me and got me off the ground when I was just a kid, is super special.

So to be the SA Open champion is something I'll never forget. It's a tournament I watched growing up and I watched a lot of legends. "It's obviously one as a South African that I've always wanted to win.

122 years of history

Ernie Els
The South African Open was first played in 1903, becoming part of the DP World Tour schedule in 1997, and has since been won by some of the greatest names to play the game.

Bobby Locke won the first of his nine titles as an amateur in 1935, with the great Gary Player the only person to have won it more times having lifted the trophy on 13 occasions.

Vijay Singh won the event the first time it was part of the DP World Tour and in the following 28 years it has been won by fellow Major Champions Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman and Retief Goosen on multiple occasions, with Louis Oosthuizen tasting victory in the 2019 season.

South Africans have won the last six editions and seven of the last ten, with a strong contingent of home heroes looking to extend that run this week.

As one of the oldest opens in golf, it seems fitting that this week's event is part of the Qualifying Series for The Open at Royal Portrush this summer with 3 places on offer.

All change at Durban Country Club

Established in 1922, Durban Country Club’s proud and storied history stretches back over 100 years. This week, it hosts South Africa's national open – co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour – for a record 19th time and first since 2010, when Els was crowned the champion. It last hosted an event on the DP World Tour schedule at the Volvo Golf Champions in 2014, but this time around players will face a revamped layout. In 2023-2024, the course closed for 10 months to construct renovations and drainage enhancements including the addition of a burn that serves as a drainage channel while adding strategy, safety and interest. Overlooking the Blue Lagoon estuary and the Indian Ocean, a high value is placed on approach play with each green - many of which are raised - holding a variety of pin positions that can affect strategy.

Campbell rides Lady Luck, hits jackpot at Mexico Open.....Full results

PGA Tour : Mexico Open at VidantaWorld.. Past Results

After 71 holes it came down to the 72nd between 20 year old rookie Aldrich Potgieter and the 31 year old journeyman Brian Campbell. Both made birdie on the par 5 18th, both shot 71, both got in at -20.

In the playoff, both players then made par before returning to the 18th tee for the 3rd time when Lady Luck decided to take her hand in the decision.

Aldrich Potgieter plays his shot from the eighth tee during the second round of the Mexico Open.

Potgieter was outdriving Campbell by as much as 70 yards all week. He crashed another huge drive and was sitting in the fairway with 6 iron in.

Campbell hit a bad drive, a low fade heading straight into the trees, well out of bounds, a provisional the next sure thing, until he heard that sound we hackers all know so well, the loud thwack as golf ball meets tree. and the beautiful result when it ricochets back into the fairway.

He showed promise as the low amateur at the 2015 US Open during his college career at Illinois, and won his Tour card in 2017 where he promptly MC in 13 of 20 starts before returning to the feeder tours for 7 years, He had endured failure over and over, that is a side of pro golf that does not make headlines.  A side that takes belief and support from family like girlfriend Kelsi McKee, coaches and sponsors. Monday qualifiers, nagging injuries, missed cuts, at one point when he barely kept his Korn Ferry status in 2023 he told us "Maybe I'm not playing golf next year, then what am I going to do ?!

Thoughts of yet another runner up, he had 3 of those on the Korn Ferry tour in 2024 where he finished 8th to get back here again may have flashed through his mind, until that thwack, and the result from Lady Luck, a lovely lie out in the open !

He smacked a three wood, out along the fairway 100 yards short. Potgieter had been waiting, nailed his 6 iron right on line, but it caught the front bunker.

Campbell hit a beauty wedge to 4 feet, Potgieter splashed out to 12 feet and missed the putt for birdie, while Campbell, managing to hold his emotion trusted the putter that had saved him all week and rolled in the life changing birdie.

He was winless in 186 starts, mostly on the Korn Ferry Tour, not only did he win as much money on Sunday $1,260,000 as he did in all 7 years in the minors, but he will play at Augusta, the Players, the PGA Championship, all 5 remaining signature events, fully exempt until 2028

Most importantly, he is forever a winner on the PGA Tour, and young Potgieter will surely have his day.

Kruyswijk wins the Magical Kenya Open Final results

DP World Tour : Magical Kenya Open  Results

Jacques Kruyswijk claimed his maiden DP World Tour title after holding off the challenge of in-form playing partner John Parry to win the 2025 Magical Kenya Open presented by absa by two shots.

Jacques Kruyswijk clinches first DP World Tour win in Kenya

The South African did not put a foot wrong in the final round as he carded four birdies in a sensational 67 to reach -18 to complete a bogey-free weekend and become the second South African winner of this event since it became part of the DP World Tour’s Global Schedule.

The 32-year-old started the day with a one-stroke lead but trailed halfway leader Parry after five holes of Sunday's fourth round, with the Englishman making back-to-back birdies at the fourth and fifth to hit the front.

But Kruyswijk soon hit back, rolling in lengthy birdie putts on the sixth and seventh to lead by one at the turn, and he went on to lead and win his first DP  World title by 2 shots.

Parry finished in solo second on -16 continuing an impressive start to the season that has seen him record a victory and two second-place finishes in three visits to Africa so far this campaign.

Deon Germishuys was three shots further back in third, one ahead of fellow South African Jayden Schaper in fourth.

Kruyswijk said: "It's special. I'm a little bit lost for words but this is for my family back home, my friends, my team and this is for South Africa.

"I'm happy that I can keep the trophy on African soil and obviously bring it back to South Africa. It makes me very proud.

"I'm super proud of myself with the mindset I've had this week and the way I've played this golf course. What can I say? I'm happy.

LPGA : Honda LPGA Thailand Tee Times

Both were well clear of the rest, with Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul 3rd at -21. Yin set a Honda LPGA Thailand all time record low score at 260.

Canada's Brooke Henderson got better as the week went on finishing T33 70 75 69 68 -6. Consider the standard of play here, albeit on a course that did not provide a stern test, Brooke was 22 shots behind the winner.

Potgieter with the slimmest lead on Sunday in Mexico..54 hole results

PGA Tour : Mexico Open Tee Times

Consider this, American, Brian Campbell has shot 65 65 64 -19 and still isn't leading this Mexico Open at Vidanta World.

Potgieter

With lots of room off the tee and 5 par 5's the young bomber from South Africa who came to America to qualify for the PGA Tour via the Korn Ferry Tour where he shot a 59, along with a win, Aldrich Potgieter riding the coattails of his 61 here on Friday will take his  one shot lead into Sunday. (64 61 67 -20).

While the big boys are off, there is still a lot at stake for the winner. A spot at Augusta, the PGA Championship, the Players and all the remaining signature events just a few of the baubles as well as becoming an instant millionaire.

With his 4 shot lead gone, he will be paired with Campbell and German Stephen Jaeger who is at -17. The highest ranked player at #29 is Aaron Rai T5 65 67 68 -14.

The lone Canadian Adam Svensson is T55 71 66 71 -5

Kruyswijk grabs the lead magical Kenya Open.... 54 hole results

DP World Tour : Magical Kenya Open  Leaderboard

Jacques Kruyswijk climbed to the top of the leaderboard ahead of the final round of the Magical Kenya Open presented by absa after firing a bogey-free 64 on Saturday afternoon.

Jacques Kruyswijk takes one-shot lead into final round in Kenya

The South African went into the third round seven shots off the lead but as others struggled in breezy conditions at Muthaiga Golf Club, Kruyswijk carded seven birdies in a flawless display to take a one-shot lead into day four.

Kruyswijk, who will go in search of his maiden DP World Tour title on Sunday, could have been even further in front had Lady Luck been smiling on him, as he was twice denied on the front nine.

First, his long eagle putt at the fourth looked destined for the hole, only for it to stop one roll before the cup and somehow stay above ground.

Then on the ninth, his chip lipped out to deny him a birdie.

But he brushed off any feelings of injustice to make five birdies on the back nine - including closing gains on the 17th and 18th - and reach 14 under par.

Halfway leader John Parry was alone in second on 13 under after finishing his 72 with a birdie. The Englishman had led by as many as three shots on the front nine but was reeled in by the impressive Kruyswijk.

Benjamin Hebert sat third on 11 under after his 73.

Kruyswijk said: "It was super breezy out there today but I played a really good game plan around this golf course, I wasn't over-aggressive - as you could see on the last couple.

"I rolled a couple in, which is great, it's always nice, but I just played super consistent and my mindset's been really good all week.

"So whatever happens tomorrow is going to happen but I'm ready."

Asked what it would mean to get his hands on the trophy on Sunday, Kruyswijk said: "It would be special. I don't want to get emotional but I'm going to stay very focused tonight and if I can bring this home for South Africa it'd be huge for me."
