PGA Tour : Sentry Tournament of Champions final scoreboard here
Collin Morikawa hadn't made a bogey in 54 holes and was 6 shots clear of the field, John Rahm was 7 shots behind... guess who won ?
Morikawa birdied his 1st, 4th and 6th out in 33. Rahm made a bogey at his 1st but then birdied 5 of his next 8 out in 32.
However on his the back nine Morikawa could only make par until suddenly he made bogey's at 14,15,16 while Rahm rallied with 4 birdies and an eagle for a back nine 31 to catch and pass a bewildered Morikawa with a closing 63 -27 for the win worth $2,700,000 while the little American came in with 72 -25 to finish 2nd for $1,500,000 of the new "designated event" $15,000,000 purse.
Rahm made up 7 shots in the last 6 holes for his 3rd win worldwide in his last 4 starts, remember he won the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai back in December.
He came to Maui a week early with wife Kelley and two small sons to get settled in and after playing the Plantation course in -33 last year to finish 2nd to Cam Smith, he opened with 64 and closed with 63 for -27 this time.. -60 over 8 rounds would suggest he plays this course better than anyone.
"Since August I feel like I've been the best player in the world, my putting is as good as it's ever been" He is ranked 4th.
Meanwhile Corey Connors improved 6 spots with a closing -6 67 -17 to T18 worth $227,000 and Mac Hughes improved 11 spots with -8 65 -16 T21 for $223,000. Adam Svensson was 10 shots better than Saturday's 78, closing with -5 68 -5 total 37th for $202,000 !
Next week, yet another in Hawaii, this time on Oahu it's the Sony Open, the first full field.
Conners, Hughes and Svensson make the short flight from Maui to Oahu to be joined by Nick Taylor as the four Canadians.
