PGA Tour : Sentry Tournament of Champions ..LEADERBOARD
Here we go for 2023 at the "designated" Sentry Tournament of Champions this week on the Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui. It's the 25th edition.
This is the first of several events the PGA Tour has made a "designated" tournament where the top 20 players are required to play, and the purse is increased to $15,000,000.
Adam Svensson who had his first win at the RSM Classic is off at 930am (local), playing with a marker.
Mac Hughes who won his 2nd at the Sanderson Farms is right after at 935am
Corey Connors who didn't win last year but is ranked 34th in the world and finished 25th in Fed Ex Cup standings has qualified under the new expanded criteria is off at 1120am. The top 30 in the final Fed Ex Cup have been invited this year.
Many of the top ranked players as you can see from my leaderboard link are off last. Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele at 1245, Rahm and Fitzpatrick at 1235 for example.
Remember Rahm who won the season ending DP World Tour Championship shot -33 here last year and lost by a shot to Aussie Cam Smith -34 who is not allowed in the field because he has jumped to the LIV series. His score was the lowest ever at a sanctioned PGA Tour event. If the wind doesn't blow you can expect more of the same this wee.
There are 39 players, 17 of the top 20 but world #1 Rory isn't playing because each of the star players is allowed to miss 1 of the "elevated" events. He will begin his campaign later in January on the DP World Tour event in Dubai.
****Since you asked me earlier this week there are 17 designated events this year: 4 majors and the Players, 3 Fed Ex Cup playoffs, WGC Dell Tech Match Play, Tiger Woods Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, Jack Nicklaus Memorial, Waste Management Phoenix Open, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo and Travelers Championship and this Sentry TOC.
