PGA Tour : Sentry Tournament of Champions leaderboard here
The first 2 weeks of the PGA Tour are a pretty soft touch, if you've ever been to the Hawaiian Islands you'll know what I mean.
It's paradise especially for Canadians in the throws of a long dark cold winter. The islands all have different characteristics, this week they are on Maui, one of the most exclusive.
So it's a family deal for many, some come a week early to get settled in, but there is also the matter of a newly minted $15,000,000 dollar tournament up for grabs.
Mac Hughes has his wife Jenna and 3 youngsters along this year with his mum and dad, his first back since winning the RSM Classic a month after they were married in 2016. They met while they attended Kent State University. Last year he won the Sanderson Farms to qualify for this week.
So while Jenna and parents look after the kids around the pool, Mac went out on a very doable calm Plantation course and posted -7 66 T5.
"I was hitting it solid, the conditions are ripe, I knew guys were going to come in 8 or 9 under, so it was a day to get after it."
With 6 birdies and a chip in eagle at the 9th, his only bogey came at the par 4 13th.
Corey Connors started steadily, ending up with a bogey free -5 68 T17, while Adam Svensson who was first off playing alone posted a -2 71 T34.
Jon Rahm who was 2nd here last year at -33 shot -9 64 along with Collin Morikawa and JJ Spaun in this 39 man field.
Friday is forecast to be the windiest of the week at around 20kph which is light considering what the traditional trade wins can serve up on a regular basis.
Svensson is off at 9.55 am local, Conners at 11am and Hughes in the 3rd last group with Tom Hoge at 12.25pm, they are both just 2 shots off the lead.
