Playing with fellow "rookies" Jim Furyk (68) and KJ Choi (72), Mike Weir has opened the new chapter in his career with a steady -2 70 at the Ally Challenge on the Champions Tour at Warwick Hills GC in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
Looking as slim and fit as ever, he displayed some of the short game that has been his trademark with 2 birdies and 1 bogey on the front nine and 1 birdie with 8 pars on the back.
He only hit 7/14 fairways, but 15/18 Greens in Regulation or 83.3% and is T1 in scrambling, and he averaged 293.5 yards with his driver.
David Morland III is also in the field and he shot +1 73.
Billy Andrade and Tommy Armour III lead with -6 66 just ahead of 3 players including evergreen Bernhard Langer at -5 67. Ernie Els shot -3 69 with a hole in one and a skinny Monty, who has fought the flab his whole career also shot -3 69, 40 pounds lighter.
Remember Tom Kite? He is one of the older guys who couldn't resist showing up. He ended his day with a snowman (8) in his way to +12 84. Peter Jacobsen was miked up, shot +5 79, Brad Faxon 78, Blaine McAllister 80.
