AIG Women's Open Sunday scoreboard / tee times https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/aigwomensopen/leaderboard
Four weeks ago Sophia Popov was caddying for Anne van Dam on the LPGA Tour. Three weeks ago she earned a spot at the AIG Women's Open with a 9th place finish at the Marathon LPGA Classic.
She lost her LPGA card in 2019 and plays the Symetra Tour and the Cactus Tour, but had absolutely no plans for Royal Troon apart from watching on TV.
She flew in to Preswick from Arizona, had a practice round and went out in a howling gale with the rest of the field on Thursday and Friday with no expectations on herself, playing with house money.
Yesterday she hit 18/18 GIR with no bogey's and with rounds of 70 72 67 -4 she has a 3 shot lead, not bad for 304th in the world.
Several points in her favour. She has won 3 times recently on the Cactus Tour and I always think a win is a win wherever you win, She has played a lot of golf during COVID unlike many others in the field. The weather today is almost calm, slight breeze NW so ideal for scoring. Finally no matter what happens she is in for a big pay day with a $700,000 first prize, and possibly a lot more, all of that is just an unexpected bonus.
With round 4 under way, she found the fairway bunker with her drive, and barely missed a 12 footer for par, so she has dropped a shot to start.
*****Alena Sharp is at E at the turn with 7 pars, a birdie and a bogey, still at +5.
