The LPGA has had to jump through all kinds of COVID related hurdles to get the women safely from the USA to Scotland for this week's Ladies Scottish Open sponsored by Aberdeen Standard Investments, and as a result some top players are not attending, like Brooke Henderson who remains safely at home in Smiths Falls, Ontario.
They are on Scotland's Golf Coast (NE) at the relatively new links style Renaissance Club in North Berwick where early rain has postponed the start, and the wind is blowing as round one gets underway.
Latest :With 27 players returning early on Friday to finish their 1st rounds a pair of Danes, Nicole Broch Larsen -4 68 is the leader with country man Emily Kristen Pedersen leading a huge pack at -3 69
Alena Sharp is in the field with +1 72. T33..
American Danielle Kang has won her last two events and is grabbing the early headlines with her shot at the triple. She opened E 71 claiming like most Californian's she needs to learn links golf...duh
Scotland with it's population of 4 million is entering phase 3 of their fight with COVID, so all precautions have been taken to keep the field in a safe bubble, with no fans of course.
Some of my colleagues in Scotland aren't all that pleased that their Ladies Scottish Open isn't at the old traditional North Berwick GC founded in 1832, as opposed to the new American links style, tricked up Renaissance Club.
Next week they move from Scotland's east coast to Royal Troon on the west coast in Ayrshire for the major, AIG Women's Open, where I expect a full field including Brooke Henderson and the top Koreans to be in the field.
