" This is a proper golf course. It makes you think your way around"
These words from Rory McIlroy about Olympia Fields, the setting for this week's BMW Championship. Only 3 players including Mac Hughes broke the par of 70.
Thick rough, firm narrow fairways and greens which reject errant approaches, with tough recovery shots have finally set a stern test as it should be for the final playoff before the Tour Championship. It is a US Open set up.
Remember of the 69 players in the field only the top 30 move on.
Mac Hughes talked about it after his -1 69 has him 3rd behind Tyler Duncan -2 68 and Hideki Matsuyama -3 67.
He said it was tough, and didn't hit a lot of fairways (5/14) but had 2 sand saves, and was 4th in scrambling. He also putted well with 1.8% strokes gained.
He has moved from 36 to 19 in the Fed Ex standing.
Adam Hadwin T46 74, Nick Taylor T51 75, Corey Connors T60 76, so in these conditions it will be tough for them to catch up unless they begin with a good round today.
Rory who has been out of sorts since he returned from the COVID break had his putter with him yesterday and is part of a large group at E 70.
Dustin Johnson 71, Adam Scott 72, Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods 73, Jon Rahm 75, Jason Day 76 are some of the notables.
It will be a hot day in Chicago, with a SW wind at 10-15 kph and rain expected overnight. So I don't expect the tricky greens to get any easier.
