How Mac Hughes season turned around in March...BMW Championship final leaderboard

BMW Championship final scoreboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/bmw-championship/leaderboard.html

Early on Sunday morning I was looking at the early starters at the BMW Championship to see what the scoring was like. Now remember only 2 players were under par, but Joel Dahmen  had posted 7 birdies through 11 holes, so I knew there were lower scores to be had on the tough Olympia Fields.

As it turned out there were a plethora in the 60's, the lowest of the day was -6 64 to big Jon Rahm who by know you will know rolled in a 70 footer on the 1st playoff to beat Dustin Johnson who'd dropped a 45 footer of his own to get there.

From a Canadian viewpoint the day belonged to Mac Hughes, who got up and down with a curling 5 footer on his 72nd hole to move into the top 30 at #28, thus qualifying for the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

In fine Canadian style he tweeted " Looks like I'll have to keep the greasy playoff beard going until after Atlanta"

Mac has surpassed Adam Hadwin as top Canadian at #65 in the world rankings this morning. His play since the turn of March has been remarkably better. Previous to that he was struggling mightily, missing 6 of 8 cuts, until he came to the Honda Classic on March 1. In tough conditions, something clicked as he said later, with a 66 66 weekend to finish 2nd at -5.

He went off into the COVID break buoyed with confidence. He came back in mid June and was right in contention at the RBC Heritage with 66 68 69 but had a poor Sunday 78. The next week at The Travelers he made headlines with his 60 opening round, followed by 68 68 67 -17 to finish 3rd.

Two weeks later on Jack's burnt out green at the Memorial he T6 with -3 one of the few players to finish under par. A picture was becoming clear, the tougher the course and conditions the better he is playing.

After  a T13 at the Northern Trust where DJ shot -30, he was back at it again this week on a US Open style Olympia Fields where pars were at a premium, he was near the lead all week, finishing with 69 73 69 71 +2 T10 and now he's off to East Lake in Atlanta for the first time at the lucrative Tour Championship.

He is the only player in PGA Tour history to win on the McKenzie Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour, which is pretty darn good for a Hamilton kid whose parents used to take him to the driving range when they couldn't get a baby sitter when he was 7

Corey Connors T33 76 69 70 72 +7, Adam Hadwin T40 72 72 73 69 +8, Nick Taylor T51 75 72 73 71 +11
