Rory McIlroy in great shape on a star studded leaderboard at WGC HSBC Champions

For several weeks Rory McIlroy has stuttered out of the gate with mediocre opening rounds the clawed his way back into another T10 finish (17) which has been one of his trademarks this Player of the Year season.

Lauding an improvement in his short game he has posted 67 67 at this WGC HSBC Champions on the Sheshan International GC nestled just outside the enormous Chinese city of Shanghai with its population of over 23 million people.

At -10 he's a shot behind English star Matthew Fitzpatrick 66 67 -11 who is looking for his first WGC win.

"I have top 10s in 50% of my PGA Tour starts,” McIlroy said. “To me, that’s a nice stat to know that most times you tee it up, you maybe not contend, but you’re putting yourself there.”

Defending champion Xander Schauffele 66 69 is in a group at -9 which includes a resurgent Adam Scott and Sungjae Im.

Li Haotong of China lost ground with a 72, but he remained in the mix at three shots behind. The top eight players going into the weekend came from eight countries.

Corey Connors had 3 bogey's, 39 but came back with 2 birdies 34, and slipped back to -4 (67 73) and Adam Hadwin is struggling this week 74 77 +7 but remember there is no cut in WGC events.
