The 7th event in the very lucrative European Tour Rolex Series is in one of South Africa's premier resorts, Sun City for what is known as The African Major, the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player.
Last week in Turkey, Tyrrell Hatton won $2m US, this week's winner will receive a world record $2.5m, only to be topped at next week's Tour Championship finale in Dubai, a staggering $3m to the winner.
The European Tour had always been dwarfed in prestige and the size of tournament purses by the PGA Tour, however the enormous success of Team Europe at the Ryder Cup, and the rise through the world rankings by stars like Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson etal, including current world #1 Rory McIlroy, combined with the leadership of CEO Keith Pelley who is determined to provide a lucrative home for all of his members, many of whom have moved to the comforts of America to maximize their earnings has changed all of that.
This year they will play 47 events in 26 different countries, and while travel is much easier in the USA, European Tour members who relish the chance to see the world while playing the game they love are now very well recompensed for their efforts.
Lee Westwood has won this event 3 times and is the defending champion at the Gary Player Country Club which is celebrating their 40th anniversary.
