Toms and Reavie lead at Colonial, Sharp wins her opening match

David Toms and Chez Reavie both shot -8,62 to take the lead after one round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Toms lost a playoff to K.J. Choi last week and has obviously carried that form to Texas where he continues to drive it straight and putt very well and remember like Hamilton CG for example, bombers don't have an advantage at Colonial.

Chez Reavie, remember him, our winner from that soaking wet, thunderstorm plagued 2008 Canadian Open at the Abbey is coming back after surgery last year.

David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., was the low Canadian with a 2-under 68, while Stephen Ames of Calgary shot 1-over 71. Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ont., and Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., each shot 72.

Rickie Fowler was the subject of all the golf tweeters yesterday as he flirted with 59 before a double-bogey at his last hole (9th) took a bit of shine off that. Still -7 63 was awfully good.

Morning conditions with no wind, fast fairways and holding greens were ideal for scoring, that's why you see all the 62's, 63's and 64's on the scoreboard.

The 66's in the afternoon wind were just as impressive and watch for those guys like Sergio who played late, to benefit from the calm early conditions this morning.

LPGA

64 women are playing the Sybase Match Play at Gladstone in New Jersey where the top 32 seeds randomly drew opponents from the bottom 32 for the opening round.

Our lone Canuck, #50 Alena Sharp of Hamilton was an upset winner, outgunning #17 Mika Miyazato of Japan 4 and 3, with a 5 birdie display. It gets even tougher today as she meets last year's winner #16 Sun Young Yoo at 12.14 today.

Probably the biggest upset was  #30 Meena Lee beating #@ Jiyai Shin 2up in a match she led all the way.
