Molinari retains the lead in Shanghai

I was up through the night watching the live feed with my old pal Renton Laidlaw and his colleagues doing the commentary and straight off, if you weren't watching, their delivery is such a blessed relief from the American feed we are so used to..

Tiger and Phil are T9, and Mickelson is the defending champion, but instead of 90% of the coverage focused on them, they are allotted the same amount of time as the rest, the appropriate amount, and in fact Renton and Warren do not feel the need to over analyze every Tiger shot and swing, they let the pictures tell the story and guide us with hole and yardage information, the coverage reflects what is actually happening in the event as opposed to what is happening to Tiger..

Speaking of Tiger, it is amazing how far both his game and his dominating presence have fallen.. shocking actually....

The pins were tougher than round 1, the course was playing nearly a shot tougher..

Francesco Molinari  added a -2 70 to his opening 65 to keep a 1 shot lead at -9 135 over Lee Westwood who also shot -2 70  he is at -8 136.

Molinari's putter saved his round for him and Westwood really seems so consistent, steady, his short game has always been less than spectacular, he did flub a little chip on 18, but I am being picky..

.
In third place, 3 players.Scotland’s Richie Ramsay ( 68) to sit level with South African pair Ernie Els (65) and Jaco Van Zyl (66) all at -7.

Ramsay you may remember was the world #1 amateur when he won the US Amateur Championship in 2006 and he is in his 2nd year now on the Euro tour, he won the South African Open last year and is ranked 211 in the world...

Jaco Van Zel is 31 now and plays on the Sunshine tour in RSA where he has 4 wins this year.He is only ranked 434 in the world. This week he has already hit 25 of 28 fairways and only used 24 putts today, playing the front nine (his back nine) in only 29 shots..

Els, seeking a second WGC title of the year was his old self, swinging so smoothly and putting beautifully, his 40' lag on the tricky 18th green a perfect example, and his 65 was the best of the 78 players in this field.

Here are the scores for the T10

News note re the HSBC

I noticed this issued in the daily news notes on pgatour.com and thought I'd pass it along

HSBC Champions and PGA TOUR eligibility:

For 2010 and going forward, the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in Shanghai will count as an official PGA TOUR victory and offer a three-year exemption on the PGA TOUR - provided it is won by a PGA TOUR member.

The change is not retroactive, meaning that Phil Mickelson's win in 2009 does not count toward his official victory total.

If a non-PGA TOUR member wins the HSBC Champions, he would not receive a PGA TOUR exemption, but he would qualify for the SBS Championship.

Prize money from the $7 million purse does NOT, however, count toward the official PGA TOUR money list, even if a PGA TOUR member wins.
