The old guys have come to play the Principal Charity Classic @ Glen Oaks Country Club inWest Des Moines, Iowa.
The thing about this tour is that all the guys show up to play every week, and there are only 3 rounds, so you have to shoot in the 60's to have a chance
and our guy Rod Spittle did just that with -3 68 to trail the leader Mark Brooks, one of the best wind players I have watched who fired a -6 65. Yes the wind was blowing, up to 25mph, and Brooks who hasn't won since 1996, is in his 1st year on this Champions Tour
In the group with Spittle at -4 are defending champion Nick Price and Tom Lehman who is your money leader..

Wheatcroft flirts with 59 on Nationwide tour..
What's with guys and beards in pro golf these days ??
American Steve Wheatcroft has one, and he and his beard had a 25 footer from the fringe on 18 for 59, but unlike Carl Pettersson at our Canadian Open this year when he burned the cup for his 59, this on never had a chance..

Forgotten man Steve Stricker leads Memorial by 3 shots
Remember Steve Stricker ?? I've hardly seen him this year until yesterday. In fact he has made the cut in all 9 starts, has 3 T10's and 7 T25's and already has nearly $1.4 in the bank !!
He came to the 8th, his second last hole, par 3 186yds and hit a nice big 6 iron right into the cup and that ace, followed by a birdie on 9 led him to a -5 67 and a 3 stroke lead at -9 over 4 guys at -6.Ricky Barnes 70, the little Aussie Rod Pampling 66, Jonathan Byrd 67 and Rory McIlroy 72..
Stricker played his last 5 holes in -5 30...

GMac poised at Celtic Manor..
Last year GMac started his sensational year at this Wales Open tournament when he won, then went on to win the US Open 2 weeks later at Pebble Beach. It's history now, but he returned much later in the year with the rest of his Ryder Cup teammates and sunk that career defining putt on 17 to beat Hunter Mahan and win the Cup for Europe..
He is in 2nd spot going into play this weekend 67,68 -7, to young Swede Alex Noren 67,67 -8, and of course he goes over the pond to Congressional in 2 weeks to defend that title.
While the chances of GMac repeating last year's run are remote, he does love this 20/20 course at Celtic Manor, he said " I just know I can go low here" so I expect him to be in contention here tomorrow afternoon.
By the way if you haven't seen any of this, you might remember how hard it rained here during the Ryder Cup ( that's why the UK always looks so green), well this week they have been blessed with blue skies and just a slight breeze so far with more in store for today.

McDowell on the "prowl" at Celtic Manor
Alex Noren took over the lead in the Saab Wales Open with a second successive 67 – but he has defending champion Graeme McDowell only one behind.
The former Omega European Masters champion, who is looking forward to his US Open Championship debut - indeed his first Major in America - in two weeks after making it through with a stroke to spare at Walton Heath.
The 28 year old from Stockholm said: "I've always dreamed of playing a US Open and I'm so happy - so happy. It's such an energy boost."
He birdied four of the last five holes to take over at the top from South African Keith Horne, who after starting with a 64 failed to conjure up a single birdie in his 73.
McDowell also had four birdies in five holes, in his case from the eighth, and just as important was his recovery from under the lip of a bunker to two feet at the short tenth.
"One of the boys said Seve would have been proud of that one," he said. "I'm on a course I enjoy and in a position I enjoy."This is absolutely perfect for the US Open (he defends there as well in a fortnight). I said I just wanted to get in the mix and get the juices flowing and it's kind of mission accomplished
Welshman Jamie Donaldson is in joint third with France's Victor Dubuisson, but Phillip Price - another of the home contingent - had a real setback when he was going well.
On-course television commentator Howard Clark thought Price, one under at the time, had driven from in front of the tee at the 15th.
When it was checked on video a two shot penalty was imposed and he had to go back to the tee to play it again. He birdied it second time, but it meant a bogey on the card and he finished level par

Chris Baryla is leading the Melwood Prince George's County Open in Maryland by a shot. I haven't been able to say that for a long time !!
I did an interview earlier this year with his college coach, Scarborough native Rick Todd who told me that "Chris is by far the most talented pupil I have ever had"
I asked him why he was off to such a poor start and Rick thought it was just a matter of him seeing so many courses for the first time..
Well Chris is back on the Nationwide tour again this week on the University of Maryland GC as he couldn't get into the field at the Memorial and his sensational 1st round -7 64 has come out of nowhere.
In 9 starts on the PGA tour he has not yet made the cut, and in 3 starts on the Nationwide tour he made one cut in Louisiana, earning $1987.53 which he promptly donated to the Japan earthquake fund.
Here is his deal this year. He only played seven events due to a torn labrum in his hip in 2010...Coupled with 2010 winnings of $24,254, he was granted 16 events in 2011 to earn $762,723, equaling No. 125 from 2010. Decided to go to Q-School to improve that status, finishing T11.
He has used up 9 with no official earnings..In his last 3 outings he shot 77,87 at the Valero, 77,85 at the Zurich, and 71,77 last week at the Byron Nelson.
He told me earlier that he was feeling 100% as far as his hip was concerned, but he also had one of the tweets of the year "love life on the PGA tour, play Thursday and Friday with weekends off !!
Now part of Sean Foley's camp it will be interesting to see of this 64 is just a blimp on the radar screen or if he has found something that will turn this troubled year of his around
He tees off today in the late flight at 1.25.
