Cockerill battling 68 just 4 shots off the lead in Korea full scoreboard

DP World Tour : Korea Championship

With 7 birdies against 3 bogey's for a -4 68 Aaron Cockerill has moved up 27 spots to T20 -4 on this tough Jack Nicklaus course in the Korean Championship.

There were a couple of 65's, a few 66s, first round leader from France Antoine Rozner came back to the field with a bang, as expected 63, 74, same guy, same clubs and ball,11 shots worse. However the lead is only -8 heading into the weekend held by hometown favourite Korean Sang Park 67 69 -8 and German Yannik Paul 68 68 -8. The cut fell a E par.

Park Sanghyun and Yannik Paul share halfway lead in South Korea

Park had this to say about playing at home "With the DP World Tour coming to Korea, I want to prove that Korean players can also have the chance to win on the DP World Tour. That is why there are a lot of Korean players on the leaderboard."

Cockerill played the back nine first, with 4 birdies and a lone bogey at the par 3 17th for -3 33. With little wind the officials set the course up with some very tough pins.

Coming in with birdies at #3 and #4 he was at -5 with 5 holes to play and a shot a something really special and he added another at the 7th, but bogeys' at 6th and 8th, just slowed his progress, but he will happily take 72 68 -4 T20 just 4 shots off the lead, and in contention for the second week in Asia.

Richard T Lee has missed the cut 73 76

There is more wind expected for the weekend.

Pendrith's 5 birdie front 9 sets up T4 65 in Mexico..Full scoreboard

PGA Tour:  Mexico Open Leaderboard

Taylor Pendrith was selected by captain Trevor Immelman for last year's Presidents Cup because of his stellar play leading into the event. He has a great game, drives it really long, fine iron player and like his fellow Ontarian, Corey Connors, when his putter is co-operating he makes it look easy.

Taylor Pendrith

In 2021-22 at the Bermuda Championship after an opening 70, he shot 61 65 in a howling gale, the best of that field by far, and only a Sunday blow out 76 stopped him from gaining his first PGA Tour Title.

He has flirted with a win since, and this week in Mexico, he posted 5 birdies on his front 9 holes for 30 and the lead, added 2 more coming in with only a bogey at 15 from the front bunker spoiling a perfect round.

At -6 65 he is in a group of five T4 behind leader American,  Austin Smotherman -8 63.

Michael Gligic continues his struggles T123 +3 74.

Defending champion and star of the show, Jon Rahm T14 -4 67...

Rozner's career round in Korea, Cockerill at even, full scoreboard

DP World Tour : Korea Championship

Antoine Rozner equalled his lowest career 18-hole score on Thursday as he began the 2023 Korea Championship Presented by Genesis with a spotless 63 to open up a commanding four-shot lead.

Antoine Rozner leads by four in South Korea after opening 63

The Frenchman started from the tenth tee in the morning and fired six birdies on his front nine before picking up three more shots after the turn to get to nine under par.

None of the afternoon starters were able to get close to three-time DP World Tour winner Rozner at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea, with home favourite Park Sanghyun and England's Andy Sullivan his nearest challengers on five under.

South Korean Lee Hyungjoon was among those another shot further back in a tie for fourth, alongside Yannik Paul, Alexander Knappe, Pablo Larrazábal and Alexander Björk.

After opening his round with a par on the tenth, Rozner made back-to-back birdies at the 11th and 12th before reeling off a hat-trick of gains on the 14th, 15th and 16th.

The 30-year-old then finished his front nine with another birdie at the 18th to turn in 30.

He kept the momentum going on his back nine, following up birdies on the first and third with a curling birdie putt at the sixth to reach nine under.

Three closing pars then kept Rozner's card clean as he continued his fine form, which has seen him record one victory and three other top-ten finishes so far in the 2023 season.

He said: "A lot of things went my way today. I obviously played well but you need a bit of luck to shoot 63, especially on a hard golf course like this one.

"I holed a really good one on the 11th hole, my second hole of the day. It went straight in the centre of the hole and I thought 'maybe it could be a good day', and it was.

"I'm really pleased, I hit some superb shots. Really great start.

"It’s a tough course, you have to keep grinding and you have to focus on the shots. I did that well.

"I didn’t have so many chances on my back nine, but when I had a chance I made it. It was a pure day of golf, one of those days when you wish you could play like this all the time."

Park made six birdies and one bogey to sign for a first-round 67 and he was pleased with his performance.

He said: "I’m satisfied with my play. The course was quite challenging, but I did well.

"It has been a long time since I have played on the DP World Tour and especially in Korea, so I am very happy."

edit **** Canada's Aaron Cockerill had an up and down day, with 4 birdies off set by 4 bogey's for T47,  E while Richard T Lee was much the same and is T68 +1 73.

The players describe this Jack Nicklaus course as tough, and while Rozner had his day and will most likely come back to the field, the best other score was -5 67 so I believe we will have a more balanced leaderboard by tonight.

Aaron and Richard need a solid day to make sure they make the cut.

DP World Tour back in Korea after 10 years...details

DP World Tour: Korea Championship presented by Genesis

The DP World Tour returns to South Korea this week after a decade-long absence on its schedule as Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea plays host to the Korea Championship Presented by Genesis. Here are your five things to know.

Ahead of the Tour returning to mainland Europe next week for the DS Automobiles Italian Open, the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon – previously a Presidents Cup host venue – plays host to the inaugural Korea Championship.

A week after Japan became the 51st different country to host a DP World Tour event, the Tour marks another significant moment with a return to South Korea after a decade-long absence on its schedule.

Australian Brett Rumford was the last player to celebrate success in the country at the 2013 Ballantine’s Championship, defeating countryman Marcus Fraser and Peter Whiteford of Scotland in a play-off.

This week’s US$2 million event is the first being co-sanctioned with the Korea Professional Golfers' Association and builds on the recently announced expansion of the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR’s relationship with the KPGA.

The tournament is an important part of the DP World Tour’s partnership with the KPGA, providing a clear pathway for KPGA Tour players to compete at the highest levels of men’s professional golf,” Keith Pelley, DP World Tour Chief Executive, said.

Koreans:

Three-time DP World Tour winner Wang Jeunghun spearheads the contingent of Korean players in the field aiming to impress on home soil. Since his return to the DP World Tour at the start of the season after around two years away to complete his mandatory military service, he has registered top tens in Singapore and Thailand and arrives 43rd on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex.

The Seoul native is joined by Kim Yeongsu, who will be making his fourth DP World Tour start since earning membership by winning 2022 Genesis Point Award on the Korea Professional Golfers' Association in 2022. Kim will have fond memories of playing at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea after he claimed his very first KPGA Korean Tour title at the venue last year. As a result of winning the Genesis Championship in October, he will also gain entry into the Genesis Scottish Open, the Rolex Series event which is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.

Two-time PGA TOUR winner and 2015 Presidents Cup International team member Bae Sangmoon will also be aiming to deliver in front of his home fans on a tournament invite. Another player under the home spotlight will be Minkyu Kim, who became the youngest winner of a European Tour group event at the age of 17 with his victory at the Challenge Tour's D+D REAL Czech Challenge in 2018.

Genesis

Genesis is no stranger to golf and is reaffirming its commitment to the sport this week as Presenting Partner of the event. Since the brand’s inception in 2015, the luxury car company has sponsored a range of golf tournaments in Korea and globally, including the Genesis Championship on the KPGA Korean Tour, the Genesis Invitational on the PGA TOUR, and the Presidents Cup. Last season, it also became the title sponsor of the Genesis Scottish Open, as Scotland’s national open was co-sanctioned for the first time by the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR as part of their historic Strategic Alliance.

Field

DP World Tour Meronk -1446650321

There are no fewer than six winners on Tour so far this season in the hunt for more silverware this week. Adrian Meronk, who won his second title at the start of the campaign in Australia, is the highest-ranked player in the field. He is joined by Hero Cup teammate Antoine Rozner, who won his third career title in Mauritius in the final event of the 2022 calendar year.

Matthew Baldwin celebrated his maiden DP World Tour win at the SDC Championship last month and was in the field when the Tour was last in Korea for the Ballantine’s Championship in 2013.

In another great storyline so far this campaign, Marcel Siem returned to the DP World Tour winner’s circle after an eight-year wait at the Hero Indian Open, while Daniel Gavins claimed a dramatic second Tour win in Ras Al Khaimah. Jorge Campillo is the final player in the field aiming to become just the second player to win twice this season, after Ockie Strydom.

Canadian Aaron Cockerill who lost last week in a playoff has jumped 12 spots in owgr,381 to 250 is in the field. "I am hitting the ball better than I ever have" said the new father after his narrow loss in Japan. Richard T Lee is the other Canadian.

Technology

The European Tour group is committed to promoting golf in an environmental and socially sustainable way, with this week’s tournament the second remote production of the 2023 DP World Tour season. Following on from last year’s Cazoo Open de France at Le Golf National, the Singapore Classic became the second such event with the support of Official DP World Tour Supplier Tata Communications.

The live production crew will be working on the coverage from the London-based office rather than on site in Korea, saving 87.3 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Lucas Herbert edges Aaron Cockerill in a playoff at ISPS Handa.. final results

DP World Tour : ISPS Handa Results

Lucas Herbert beat Aaron Cockerill in a play-off to win the 2023 ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP and secure his third DP World Tour title.

Herbert

Australian Herbert got the job done at the second extra hole, recovering from an errant tee-shot before holing from 12 feet to banish the memory of the travel issues which saw him arrive late into Japan on Wednesday.

Extra holes were required after both players finished the tournament on 15 under par following a thrilling final round.

After Herbert had narrowly missed his 20-foot birdie try at the 18th, Cockerill played the 72nd hole knowing a birdie would be enough to clinch his first title.

But having found the fairway with a perfect drive, Canadian Cockerill sent his second shot into a greenside bunker - and it looked like Herbert had the advantage.

Cockerill produced a stunning recovery from the sand, though, almost holing his bunker shot before tapping in for a par to force a play-off.

Both men were just off the green after two shots at the first extra hole, with Herbert slightly further back in the fringe.

After Herbert missed his birdie try, Cockerill's effort looked to be heading in before an agonising lip-out extended the contest.

Despite sending his tee-shot into the trees, Herbert managed to knock his second shot onto the green and roll in the putt to claim the title.

Herbert's 67 featured an eagle, three birdies and two bogeys, while third-round leader Cockerill signed for a closing 68 which contained four birdies and two bogeys.

Scotland's Calum Hill was alone in third on 14 under after his closing 65, one shot ahead of countryman Grant Forrest and home favourite Hiroshi Iwata.

Herbert went into the final round one shot off the lead but birdied the first hole to close the gap.

After a spectacular approach into the par-five fifth, the Australian holed his eagle putt from around six feet to jump to 15 under.

Herbert dropped a shot at the eighth but bounced back with a 15-foot birdie putt on the tenth before limiting the damage to a bogey after getting into tree trouble off the tee at the 11th.

He regained the outright lead with a birdie from ten feet at the 12th, which came courtesy of a brilliant approach shot.

Herbert then holed a series of important par putts at the 13th, 14th and 15th before narrowly missing his birdie try on the 16th.

After safely parring the short 17th, Herbert gave himself an outside birdie chance on the 18th but could not convert from 20 feet and had to settle for a place in the two-man play-off.

With both players making par at the first extra hole, Herbert was lucky to avoid serious damage at the second as his tee-shot went towards the trees.

But he got a drop and took full advantage, as he knocked his second shot onto the putting surface and drained the putt to emerge victorious.

The win takes Herbert to fourth on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex and earns him a first title since the 2021 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

Cockerill on top in Japan !!! full scoreboard

DP World Tour : ISPS Handa 4th round

For fans of the Canadian game, news that Winnipeg's Aaron Cockerill is leading the field into Sunday at this ISPS Handa in Japan is great !

Rounds of 64 69 64 -13 have him and his family Chelsea, Addison on high alert.

Here is the report from europeantour.com

Aaron Cockerill heads into the final round of the 2023 ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP with a one-shot lead after making a lightning-quick start on Saturday.

The Canadian began his third-round 64 with a hat-trick of birdies before making four more gains and a single bogey to reach 13 under par.

But if Cockerill is to secure his maiden DP World Tour title at PGM Ishioka Golf Club on Sunday, he will have to fight off a stellar chasing pack.

Australian Lucas Herbert and Scotland's David Law were just a shot back on 12 under after posting rounds of 68 and 64 respectively on Moving Day.

Japanese duo Rikuya Hoshino and Takumi Kanaya shared fourth place with Scot Grant Forrest on 11 under, one stroke clear of Jazz Janewattananond and Rafa Cabrera Bello.

Cockerill got off to the perfect start, picking up shots at the first, second and third to jump to ten under.

A wonderful approach at the fifth set up an eagle chance but he instead had to settle for his fourth birdie of the day.

He finished off the front nine with a 12-foot birdie to reach the turn in 30.

After making two more gains at the 12th and 14th to get to 14 under, Cockerill made his only bogey on the 15th.

A delightful chip saw Cockerill get up and down for par on the 16th before another good save on the 17th kept him in front.

And he safely parred the last to take a narrow lead into the final day.

Cockerill said: "Dream start. I hit it close the first couple of holes. Made a ten-footer, hit it close for eagle on the fifth and actually missed it.

"But yeah, just an awesome start and just kind of played steady the rest of the way but overall a very good day.

"I feel really good. This is the best I've hit the ball in a long time, and it's required out here with the rough being up, and it's firm.

"Just putting it in the fairway, and everything else has been really solid so I'll look to continue that tomorrow."

Reflecting on becoming a father in February, Cockerill added: "It's been awesome and she's a very good little baby. We're very lucky - she sleeps a lot and she's very happy.

"They're coming over to Rome in a couple of weeks so I'm excited to see them soon."

He then reeled off a hat-trick of birdies from the third before recovering from a bogey on the seventh with a closing gain from around eight feet.

The Englishman said: "Really pleased, just got off to a good start.

"A lot of right flags out there for me to find - as my playing partner Romain Langasque told me! He was like 'Every flag out there is a right flag and you fade the ball so it’s perfect for you today'.

"It was good fun playing with Brendan (Lawlor) and Romain, very relaxed vibe. It was just like going out there and playing with your mates, really.

"Me and my coach have been working on going back to when I was playing my best, around 2015, 16, so we’ve looked at swings from there and almost tried to mimic that.

"It’s getting close, feel confident with the irons. Driver is still taking a bit of work. On the whole the game is feeling good. It feels a lot more under control again, less of the erratic shots."

It is being co-sanctioned with the Japan Golf Tour Organisation and builds on the recently announced partnership between the DP World Tour, PGA TOUR and JGTO, that will see the top three players on the JGTO Order of Merit earn membership onto the DP World Tour each season.

The only previous event on Japanese soil to feature on the DP World Tour schedule was the Olympic Men’s Golf Competition at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Saitama in 2021. Isao Aoki was Japan's first winner on the DP World Tour in 1983 and since then Hideki Matsuyama has added a Major triumph at the Masters Tournament and two World Golf Championships to the nation's roll of honour. Could we see a fifth Japanese win this week?

Four-time Major Champion Ernie Els is sure to take big crowds with him as he goes in search of a third career win in Japan. The Big Easy won the 1993 Dunlop Phoenix Tournament at Phoenix Country Club and the 2001 World Cup of Golf at Taiheiyo Golf Club alongside fellow South African Major winner Retief Goosen, and arrives in Omitama fresh off a recent PGA TOUR Champions win. Thomas Bjørn is also looking for more success in Japan, having won the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament in 1999 and 2003, with Rafa Cabrera Bello, Rasmus Højgaard, Robert MacIntyre, Guido Migliozzi, Antione Rozner, Yannik Paul, Marcel Siem and Nicolas Colsaerts all teeing it up.

Japanese stars have been making a big impression on the DP World Tour so far this season and will be out to further impress on home soil. Last year's JGTO Order of Merit winner Kazuko Higa arrives after a Major Championship appearance at the Masters Tournament and will have Masahiro Kawamura and Ryo Hisatsune - both in the top 25 on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex - for company. Current JGTO Order of Merit leader Shugo Imahira is also in the field alongside DP World Tour members Rikuya Hoshino, Aguri Iwasaki, Taiga Semikawa and Takumi Kanaya

The drain on the DP World Tour continues, Matt Fitzpatrick wins RBC Heritage.... final results/ prize money

PGA Tour : RBC Heritage Leaderboard / Money/Finishes

The inevitable shoot out took place on Sunday at the RBC Heritage, a combination of ideal conditions and a short by Tour standards, Harbour Town links, with 14 players including 3 major winners within 4 shots.

By now you'll know that England's Matt Fitzpatrick stuffed his 180yd approach on the 3rd playoff hole (18th) 'within the leather' to edge defending champion Jordan Spieth for the title and the plaid jacket.

Matt Fitzpatrick-1482698921

Matt Fitzpatrick climbs to eighth on the Official World Golf Ranking

Great news for the young man from Sheffield who has an British pedigree with the best, but there is a downside.

Consider this :

2012 : British Boys Amateur

2013 : low amateur Open Championship, US Open Amateur

2014 : World #1 Amateur

2015- 2023  9 professional wins, 8 on the European Tour

2019 : European Ryder Cup member

2022 : US Open

The downside for followers of the European /DP World Tour, is winning the US Open already gave Matt a 5 year exemption on the PGA Tour, and this year under the new Strategic Alliance the top 10 players in the Race to Dubai will receive their PGA Tour cards, and say toodaloo to the DP World Tour except for the Open and a few select events.

With 17 PGA Tour designated events worth $20,000,000 or more compared to 5 Rolex Series events worth $9,000,000 DP World events, you can see why the drain on players born and raised in the UK and all other countries where they plied their trade on the European Tour is more desirable that ever. Also the OWGR points awarded are heavily tilted to the PGA Tour.

Not to mention the LIV series is lurking around the corner with offers of unmatched wealth that you know all about.

A few years ago Lee Westwood from Worksop in England decided to move to Florida to enhance his career, but after a short stay in the lap of luxury, and a divorce, decided to move back to Scotland to be nearer his children. Now he is getting millions from LIV without a win to his name, and a new wife. easy peasy

Homesickness with the internet and private jet travel at their fingertips is easily solved for today's top pros.

The move to the US has been going on since Tony Jacklin's era, he still lives in Florida, and many Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Rory McIlroy etal are as proud of their heritage as any, but live in great weather and supreme luxury in Florida's, Arizona's, South Carolina's gated communities.

It is all adding up as my colleagues in the UK have been saying for years, the DP World Tour and all  it's tradition, to be blunt has turned into a feeder tour, like AAA baseball.

Results:

Winner : Matt Fitzpatrick 66 70 63 68 -17  $3,600,000  500 FedEx Cup points. OWGR #8

Brooke Henderson ended up T11 71 70 69 71 -7 and had this to say " Today wasn't what I wanted but overall my week was really solid, I saw a lot of good things in my game, but also definitely some things I need to work on before next week before the Chevron starts.

This course requires a lot of wedges, and I feel like I can sharpen them up, so a lot of wedge practice coming up, and of course majors always require good putting. "
