How Mac Hughes season turned around in March...BMW Championship final leaderboard

BMW Championship final scoreboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/bmw-championship/leaderboard.html

Early on Sunday morning I was looking at the early starters at the BMW Championship to see what the scoring was like. Now remember only 2 players were under par, but Joel Dahmen  had posted 7 birdies through 11 holes, so I knew there were lower scores to be had on the tough Olympia Fields.

As it turned out there were a plethora in the 60's, the lowest of the day was -6 64 to big Jon Rahm who by know you will know rolled in a 70 footer on the 1st playoff to beat Dustin Johnson who'd dropped a 45 footer of his own to get there.

From a Canadian viewpoint the day belonged to Mac Hughes, who got up and down with a curling 5 footer on his 72nd hole to move into the top 30 at #28, thus qualifying for the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

In fine Canadian style he tweeted " Looks like I'll have to keep the greasy playoff beard going until after Atlanta"

Mac has surpassed Adam Hadwin as top Canadian at #65 in the world rankings this morning. His play since the turn of March has been remarkably better. Previous to that he was struggling mightily, missing 6 of 8 cuts, until he came to the Honda Classic on March 1. In tough conditions, something clicked as he said later, with a 66 66 weekend to finish 2nd at -5.

He went off into the COVID break buoyed with confidence. He came back in mid June and was right in contention at the RBC Heritage with 66 68 69 but had a poor Sunday 78. The next week at The Travelers he made headlines with his 60 opening round, followed by 68 68 67 -17 to finish 3rd.

Two weeks later on Jack's burnt out green at the Memorial he T6 with -3 one of the few players to finish under par. A picture was becoming clear, the tougher the course and conditions the better he is playing.

After  a T13 at the Northern Trust where DJ shot -30, he was back at it again this week on a US Open style Olympia Fields where pars were at a premium, he was near the lead all week, finishing with 69 73 69 71 +2 T10 and now he's off to East Lake in Atlanta for the first time at the lucrative Tour Championship.

He is the only player in PGA Tour history to win on the McKenzie Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour, which is pretty darn good for a Hamilton kid whose parents used to take him to the driving range when they couldn't get a baby sitter when he was 7

Corey Connors T33 76 69 70 72 +7, Adam Hadwin T40 72 72 73 69 +8, Nick Taylor T51 75 72 73 71 +11

Mac Hughes rock solid on rock hard Olympia Fields.. Sunday tee times/live scoring

BMW Championship Sunday tee times/ live scoreboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/bmw-championship/leaderboard.html

Tiger Woods (72) was tempted to smash his golf club on a rock hard cartpath, Mac Hughes says Olympia Fields has been "rock hard from the getgo", and he's one of a few who've been rock solid at this BMW Championship, with a round to go to decide who will make the top 30 at the PGA Tour season finale Tour Championship in a fortnight's time.

Hughes plays best on tough courses, his 6th place finish at Jack's burnt out Memorial ( Jon Rahm) and earlier 2nd at the Honda (Sungjae Im) where the winning scores were only -9 and -6 respectively.

He has posted 69,73,69 +1 and will begin play today 22nd on the Fed Ex board and T3, just 2 shots behind red hot Dustin Johnson (69) and Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama (69), the only 2 under par at -1.

He birdied his first hole on Saturday and then settled in for pars before another birdie at the par 3 13th when he hit his tee shot inside 3 feet. His only bogey in his rock solid round was at the 17th.

Would be Presidents Cup team mates Adam Scott (70) and Joaquin Niemann (68) join him at +1, then a group of six including expectant dad Rory McIlroy (73) and recent #1 Jon Rahm (66) are at +2. Rory and his wife are expecting any day which may be why he has been distracted of late, and he says " I'll be out of here the moment I get the word"

Hughes joined his fellow competitors in his assessment of Olympia Fields, " It's so hard you have to focus so much on every shot you just get in your own world out there, and just the task at hand" A birdie here or a double there can move you up or down the leaderboard in a heartbeat."

Corey Connors (70) had a hole in one at the 6th, but then made 4 straight bogey's to end up +5 T21, Adam Hadwin T47 (73) and Nick Taylor T55 (73). All will be heading home without remarkable rounds later today.

Connors posts first bogey free round at Olympia Fields.. Saturday tee times/ live scoring

BMW Championship Saturday tee times/ live scoring https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/bmw-championship/leaderboard.html

Par is very good this week, as Olympia Fields finally provides the stern test worthy of these Fed Ex Cup playoffs.

"It's about as stiff a test as you could want. It's very very difficult and you have to play from the fairway and play from below the hole quite frankly. The greens have so much slope on them you have to be putting uphill and so if you are in the rough it becomes exponentially difficult to do that."

This analysis from Patrick Cantley (68) who shares the lead with Rory McIlroy (69) at -1 heading into today's play. They are the only two under par, the score incidentally I think will win the tournament.

Scoring : Without putting you to sleep just remember there are two events going on at once. The BMW Championship and it's scores, and then how those scores affect the year long Fed Ex Cup standings where only the top 30 get to play the season finale Tour Championship.

Corey Connors became the first guy this week to post a bogey free round, with 17 pars and the one birdie for a -1 69 which has him at T30 +5 after his opening 76. However he began the week ranked 54th but actually dropped a spot to 55th in the Fed Ex Cup rankings, where only the top 30 move on. He'll need two more good rounds to get in.

Mac Hughes opened with -1 69 which moved him to 19th in the Fed Ex Cup, however his +3 73 yesterday has him T10 in the tournament and 30th in the Fed Ex Cup, right on the bubble.

Adam Hadwin 74 72 +6 sees him T39 and at 56 in the Fed Ex standings.

Nick Taylor 75 72 +7 is T46 but 49th in the Fed Ex.

For all the scores and today's tee times click on my link above.

Tiger is struggling, T46 73 75 +8 and away down the Fed Ex standings.

Sophia Popov will not receive a 5 year exemption from the LPGA

Sophia Popov has provided us with the sports story of this COVID summer with her fairy tale win of the #AIGWomensOpen last weekend at Royal Troon.

Today the LPGA clarified her future status which has thrown some cold water on the story.

We all thought amongst her prizes for the major win she would receive the 5 year full exemption. However under the rules only "LPGA members at the time of the win get the full 5 years"

So as it stands Sophia lost out on her LPGA card by a shot at Q school so joined the Symetra Tour and does not qualify.

She is a full member for this season and 2021. She doesn't qualify for the upcoming ANA Inspiration because that field was filled earlier when it should have been played this year, and she does not get into the US Open because it has offered the last 5 Open winners before this year.

The response has been loud and large with Ian Poulter saying the decision has "taken the top story to the lowest in a week" and Tommy Fleetwood calling it "stupid"

Popov says the news has been getting her down,  but understands they can't change it just for her.

With respect to the winners before her, it's obviously time for the change, and for the sake of the game I hope they do.

Knowing Sophia she will likely make all this a mute point the way she's playing.

Mac Hughes passes the stern test at Olympia Fields... live scoreboard

BMW Championship leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/bmw-championship/leaderboard.html

" This is a proper golf course. It makes you think your way around"

These words from Rory McIlroy about Olympia Fields, the setting for this week's BMW Championship. Only 3 players including Mac Hughes broke the par of 70.

Thick rough, firm narrow fairways and greens which reject errant approaches, with tough recovery shots have finally set a stern test as it should be for the final playoff before the Tour Championship. It is a US Open set up.

Remember of the 69 players in the field only the top 30 move on.

Mac Hughes talked about it after his -1 69 has him 3rd behind Tyler Duncan -2 68 and Hideki Matsuyama -3 67.

He said it was tough, and didn't hit a lot of fairways (5/14) but had 2 sand saves, and was 4th in scrambling. He also putted well with 1.8% strokes gained.

He  has moved from 36 to 19 in the Fed Ex standing.

Adam Hadwin T46 74, Nick Taylor T51 75, Corey Connors T60 76, so in these conditions it will be  tough for them to catch up unless they begin with a good round today.

Rory who has been out of sorts since he returned from the COVID break had his putter with him yesterday and is part of a large group at E 70.

Dustin Johnson 71, Adam Scott 72, Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods 73, Jon Rahm 75, Jason Day 76 are some of the notables.

It will be a hot day in Chicago, with a SW wind at 10-15 kph and rain expected overnight. So I don't expect the tricky greens to get any easier.

Brook Henderson, Alena Sharp, Jaclyn Lee at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.. tee times

LPGA Tour Walmart NW Arkansas Championship Friday Tee Times /leaderboard https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/walmartnwarkansaschampionshippresentedbypg/leaderboard

The women of the LPGA Tour have made their way from the west coast of Scotland to Rogers, Arkansas for this weeks Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, what a culture shock. Some say the Scottish dialect is tough to understand, now they have the hee haw of Arkansas.

The weather will be twice as hot at times as it was at Royal Troon, the wind a slight breeze, and there is heavy rain expected overnight on Saturday and early Sunday morning as Hurricane Laura batters the southern USA.

Gone are the hallowed links and back to the park land of the Pinnacle CC near Fayetteville.

Brooke Henderson returns for her 2nd event after missing the cut in Scotland at +10. Alena Sharp had a solid week at Royal Troon finishing +6 and admitted after she was pleased with her game, but needed more putts to fall. Jaclyn Lee is returning from injury after her rookie year in 2019.

Play gets underway on Friday.

Fed Ex Cup playoffs are hardly playoffs, are they !

The Northern Trust final scoreboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/the-northern-trust/leaderboard.html

Lets begin with the premise that I don't think most of you understand how the Fed Ex Cup playoffs work, right down until the last few holes of the Tour Championship in a couple of weeks time.

Lets also agree that throwing a $15 million bonus into the winners jeans pocket does nothing to enhance any excitement the playoffs may provide except amongst his wife and family.

Let's also agree that a myriad of reasons, including golf and equipment technology, training methods, the US college feeder system, improved fitness and lifestyle of today's pros, more golfers from around the world, climate change, improved agronomy, soft lush outdated courses, have all factored into lowering tournament scores and taking the drama out of the old risk and reward.

I dare say I think we all agree the playoffs in golf create absolutely no excitement especially in this COVID era when they are playing in absolute silence.

Playoffs in other professional leagues provide pulsating excitement and winning the ultimate prize is an exhausting journey which gets tougher at every level.

The last venue before the top 125 playoff contenders was finalized was at the soft, accessible Sedgefield CC at the Wyndham which surrendered -21 to journeyman Jim Herman, and looking at some of the scores since they came back from COVID, RBC Heritage with Webb Simpson winning 65 65 68 64 -22,  the Travelers which DJ won with 69 64 61 67 events like the Rocket Mortgage, John Deere, the Workday Charity Open have hardly been stern tests of golf.

Now the playoffs should step up the test, right? DJ battled his way to victory on TPC Boston this weekend with 67 60 64 63 -30 a nail biter right to the finish, edging his closest "competitor" by 11 shots.

Next week its off to Chicago for the 70 man BMW at Olympia Fields where Justin Thomas won last year with 65 69 61 68 -22.

Do you understand how the 70 players got there? Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor missed the cut last week and they are still playing this week.

There is no excitement, no buzz, no tension, nothing at stake for anyone but the players, and the only way there will be is if Tiger is in the mix, and that's unlikely in his semi retirement.

Golf can be thrilling if there is something to get you on the edge of your seat, something at stake like the Ryder Cup. or the back nine at Augusta, or most recently when Royal Troon provided the dramatic setting in the wildest weather and a million to one underdog called Sophia Popov emerged from obscurity to steal our  hearts and become the Champion Golfer of the Year. She had grown men in tears all around the world.

The Fed Ex Cup playoffs have exactly none of that, no matter how much money they throw at them.

Sophia Popov stole our hearts.."Champion Golfer of the Year"... final scoreboard..

AIG Women's Open final leaderboard https://www.aigwomensopen.com/leaderboard

I haven't spent a Sunday morning watching women's golf in a long time. I sure am glad I did today.

Biased for sure as a Scot soaked in the wonderful tradition of links golf, knowing bad weather was in the forecast, and keen at first to see how Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp would do, I had no idea of the fairy tale that would evolve culminating I admit in tears of  joy around 12.35est today at my humble abode.

First, Brooke picked a tough venue to return to the game after 5 months of COVID isolating and she like many posted +10 to miss the cut.

Alena on the other hand was superb, turning into a par machine through all the links could throw at her and finishing T22 +6 71 74 73 72.

Sophia Popov was almost completely unknown in this international field as of Thursday morning. 304th in the world, playing on the Cactus and Symetra tours, while caddying a little on the LPGA Tour, she squeaked into the Open with a 9th place finish 3 weeks ago in Ohio where the top 10 won an invitation due to COVID leaving spots open.

In the worst of the weather she emerged atop the Thursday leaderboard with a -1 70 so we saw for the first time this attractive blonde from Germany with the American accent from her days in California college and her US home in Arizona, with a beaming smile and big blue eyes.

Out on Friday again in the worst weather she went out like so many in +2 38, but battled back in 34 for 72, still among the leaders at E.

That got her a later tee time on Saturday, where the SW winds had turned to a gentle breeze and the sun came out with the tide. Here in my opinion she won the championship. A bogey free -4 67 with that shot of the year candidate, a driver off the deck to the par 5 4th to 12 feet and the ensuing eagle, followed by 2 birdies on the back nine, for a three shot lead at -4 which by now had us all in disbelief.

Today all the bad weather was long gone overnight, nearly flat calm, overcast, ideal for scoring and the stage was being set as she awaited her tee time with Minjee Lee.

In the previous 3 days she and her boyfriend / caddy had won our admiration, everyone loves the underdog, but how many thought her 304th ranking game would emerge, especially after she drove it into the fairway bunker on her opening hole for a resulting bogey !!

Links golf provides a style of play like no other, especially in the wind. Good looking drives can bounce lost into the bracken and heather, riveted bunkers can be impossible to advance from, flat lies are not the norm, so the drama builds as you hold your breath for the outcome of every shot.

Sophia never flinched, birdied the 2nd then 3rd for good measure and another at 6, out in -2 34 or -6 total.

Meanwhile while scores of 66, 67, 69 were being posted they couldn't close the gap on Sophia, they were too far back, which is why she won it on Saturday.

Tiny Thai, Jasmine Suwannapura whose driver seems as tall as her, made her run with 4 straight birdies from the 4th, out in 32 and just a shot behind at -5. However she stalled on the back nine, making bogey at 11 and 13 while Sophia was making pars. Jasmine made 2 more birdies at 16 and 17 but Sophia had made 2 of her own at 15 and 16 to get to -8 and all she needed was avoid a disaster at the last.

She laid up, putted on safely from the fairway, and left her 4th on the lip which she marked.... and the floodgates opened in the arms of her boyfriend, and around the world we shared her tears of joy.

More Cinderella stuff. First German female winner of a major, immediate full LPGA Tour status, 5 year exemption to all majors, $670,000 US, millions of dollars in endorsements....

This was the best sports story of this COVID summer, the stuff of fairy tales, and a page in history.

This first women's Open on a true links course at Royal Troon will be followed next year at Carnoustie.

Sophie will be back to defend her title as the "Champion Golfer of the Year" and the one who stole our hearts.

Sophia Popov playing with house money, leads AIG Women's Open by 3 shots in calm conditions.. live scoring

AIG Women's Open Sunday scoreboard / tee times https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/aigwomensopen/leaderboard

Four weeks ago Sophia Popov was caddying for Anne van Dam on the LPGA Tour. Three weeks ago she earned a spot at the AIG Women's Open with a 9th place finish at the Marathon LPGA Classic.

She lost her LPGA card in 2019 and plays the Symetra Tour and the Cactus Tour, but had absolutely no plans for Royal Troon apart from watching on TV.

She flew in to Preswick from Arizona, had a practice round and went out in a howling gale with the rest of the field on Thursday and Friday with no expectations on herself, playing with house money.

Yesterday she hit 18/18 GIR  with no bogey's and with rounds of 70 72 67 -4 she has a 3 shot lead, not bad for 304th in the world.

Several points in her favour. She has won 3 times recently on the Cactus Tour and I always think a win is a win wherever you win, She has played a lot of  golf during COVID unlike many others in the field. The weather today is almost calm, slight breeze NW so ideal for scoring. Finally no matter what happens she is in for a big pay day with a $700,000 first prize, and possibly a lot more, all of that is just an unexpected bonus.

With round 4 under way, she found the fairway bunker with her drive, and barely missed a 12 footer for par, so she has dropped a shot to start.

*****Alena Sharp is at E at the  turn with 7 pars, a birdie and a bogey, still at +5.

Alena stays in contention with 73 .Saturday at Royal Troon.. live scoring

AIG Women's Open. Saturday tee times, live scoring https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/aigwomensopen/leaderboard

Weather forecast https://www.google.com/search?q=weather+for+ayr+scotland&rlz=1C1ZKTG_enCA901CA901&oq=weather&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j69i59l2j0l4.9237j1j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Round 3 is in the books at Royal Troon, the wind remained from SW but not as severe, the sun was shining and this has been the best day so far for scoring.

Brooke Henderson missed the cut by a shot at +10.

Alena Sharp 71 74 played with American, Megan Khang 75 70 at 1.27 local or 8.27 est, both started  at +3, just 4 shots behind the only woman under par when play began, Sweden's Dani Holmqvist 70 71 -1

For both players, the day became one of steady pars, in fact Megan made 17 of them, with just one bogey at 15. Her +1 72 has her at +4 going into Sunday.

Alena made bogey at the 2nd, got it back with birdie at the 4th and went out with Megan in E 36. It was all pars on the back nine for Alena except for a bogey at 11, then the other at 15 for +2 37 =73 and a +5 total.

There were birdies available today, the lowest was by veteran Aussie Katherine Kirk -4 67, and there were hat full of 68's 69's and 70's,  however the leader going into Sunday is unheralded German, Sophia Popov from the Symetra Tour who started the day E (70 72) then posted a career round -4 67 with a driver off the deck eagle 3 and 2 birdies to lead the pack by 3 clear shots.

Minjee Lee and Jasmine Suwannapura (Thailand) are T2 at -1

So a great week so far for Alena Sharp, she has been very solid, remember at the beginning of the week we agreed par was a good score. I'm sure she'd have liked a few birdies to drop, but so would many more below her in the field.

It might suit Alena if the wind would howl again on Sunday where she has excelled, however it will shift to NW bringing the temperature down, and will be light. That will allow all of the field to score their ball well, so expect to see many more scores in the 60's on Sunday.

Remember on Thursday in a gale she played the back nine in 32 shots. She may have to do that again !

Bryan Angus.

Terrific Alena Sharp is right in contention for the weekend at AIG Women's Open... live scoreboard..

AIG Women's Open leaderboard https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/aigwomensopen/leaderboard

I'd love to be more specific but to be honest I have watched 12 hours of the AIG Women's Open over the first two days on the Golf Channel with the Sky Sports feed, and despite top of the leaderboard play by Alena Sharp 71 74 +3 which will be 4 shots off the lead heading into the weekend, I cannot say I've seen her play a single shot, certainly not today.

Paired with Dame Laura Davies playing in her 40th Women's Open, you know the cameras were available. Davies shot 80 on Thursday and birdied the last today and they showed her putt out for her 74, but cut away before Alena did likewise, albeit for bogey.

So, on Thursday Alena drove OB on the first in that early howling gale for a double, but recovered with birdies at 4,5 into the same wind, not many did. She was out in 39, then after a bogey on the 10th, made 4 birdies in her last 8 holes for a magnificent 32 and E71.

Today with a later tee time, she made a 4 at the 1st, birdie at 2, bogey at 3,4 then solid pars to the turn  in +1 37. Three pars and a birdie at 13 saw Alena E par with 5 to play on the 14th tee, with the wind blowing a houlie as they say in Scotland. She made bogey at 14,15 and unfortunately at 18 for 37 and +3 total.

Click on my leaderboard link above.

One player, Sweden's Dani Holmqvist 71 70 is the ONLY player  under par. Then American Austin Ernst at 72 70 E who had the clubhouse lead most of the day.

Seven players led by Lydia Ko are at +1, four players at +2, then Alena in a group of 8 at +3.

It is 5.15pm at Royal Troon, the last group on course  is currently playing the 8th hole so they won't finish play until nearly 8.15pm local time.

The cut fell at +9. Brooke Henderson missed it at +10.

Weather forecast: https://www.google.com/search?q=weather+for+ayr+scotland&rlz=1C1ZKTG_enCA901CA901&oq=weather&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j69i59l2j0l4.9237j1j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

The wind is still from SW at around 20kph this Saturday morning The wind will slowly drop and shift to the W later today,  then the traditional NW on Sunday, but lighter and the sun will come out.

Mike Weir bogey free 64 charges up the leaderboard at Big Cedar Lodge.. live scoring.

Big Cedar Lodge live scoreboard https://www.pgatour.com/champions/competition/2020/charles-schwab-series-at-bass-pro-big-cedar-lodge/leaderboard.html

The putts didn't fall on Wednesday for Mike Weir's +2 73, but with stellar iron play (89% GIR) and a co-operative flat stick, he went out yesterday at this Big Cedar Lodge, with 4 birdies, 31 and added 3 more for 33 and a sparkling bogey free -7 64 as he charged up the leaderboard 46 places to begin round 3 T18 -5.

The run away leader after 2 rounds of 64 is American Shane Bertsch at -14.

Stephen Ames had to withdraw with an injury.

Scheffler's 59, DJ'S 60 TPC Boston scorched at The Northern Trust.. live scoring

The Northern Trust..Saturday tee times, live leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/the-northern-trust/leaderboard.html

TPC Boston isn't suffering anything like the weather in Ayrshire where the women are battling the howling wind and rain at the AIG Women's Open, so the scoring for the first round of the PGA Tour playoffs at the Northern Trust reflected that, with 4 players at -7 64 leading after the opening round.

On Friday the low scoring got ridiculous for a course hosting the playoffs. First Scottie Scheffler became the 12th player in PGA Tour history to post a 59. Meanwhile Dustin Johnson was doing his thing posting a front nine -9 27, and after 2 more birdies at 10, 11 he was -11 through 11 holes before the golfing gods looked down in pity, took the heat out of his putter, and left him to par in for as Marc Leishman said "as easy a 60 as you will see"

He's at -15 leading Scheffler and Cameron Davis who's 65 looked ordinary, by 2 shots at -13. The average score on the par 71 layout is 68.1

Mac Hughes who fired -3 68 on Thursday leads the Canadians at T29 -6 after another 68, while Corey Connors recovered from an opening +1 72 with a 65, T40 -5.

Scoring is so low the cut fell at -3. Nick Taylor 68 73 and Adam Hadwin 70 72 couldn't keep pace and are  finished for this week.

Rory McIlroy 69 70 -3, and Tiger 68 71 -3 just made the cut on the number, 12 shots off the lead heading into today's play.

Guys like Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day, Tony Finau are now finished for the year as well.

Last week at the Wyndham Championship the Sedgefield CC surrendered 21 strokes under par to journeyman Jim Herman, this week the lead is already -15 with two rounds to go.

Gary Player said years ago,"someday guys will drive the ball 400 yards and make many of our great courses obsolete"

In most sports the playoffs get tougher. Not so much so far on the PGA Tour..

Alena Sharp shares lead, Henderson flirts with the cut in the wind and rain at AIG Women's Open.... round 2 live scoreboard

AIG Women's Open leaderboard https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/aigwomensopen/leaderboard

First, the weather forecast is as expected, rain, heavy at times and the wind still blowing intermittently from the SW as it was yesterday.

The early wave are well into their second round and the cut is projected at +6. I expect the cut will continue to rise, perhaps as high as +9.  The lowest score on today's round as I post this is -2 American Kristen Gillman through 11 holes, +2 total.

Bad news, Brooke Henderson who shot +6 77 on Thursday was out early and looks like she will have made the long trip to Scotland with a missed cut. Today she shot +4 75 , 5 bogey's, a double and 3 birdies for a +10. The early wave had the worst of the weather with the heaviest rain and wind first thing this morning.

Good news, Alena Sharp shares the lead early in her 2nd round at -1 after her magnificent 71 E on Thursday, she opened with par, birdie today. Follow her scoring with my live link above. She will have a tough go of it today if the weather forecast holds up. Anything around par will see her stay near the lead.

The overnight leader at 67-4 was Amy Olsen, but this morning in the worst of the weather she is +6 through 10 holes.

The clubhouse leader is American Austin Ernst 72 70 E. Danielle Kang is at +7 playing the 18th.

Look at my weather forecast link above and you will see there is heavy rain and gusty winds expected for the late wave around 5pm local time.

Mike Weir up to par at Bass Pro Shops Big Cedar Lodge.. live scoring

Bass Pro Shops Big Cedar Lodge scoreboard https://www.pgatour.com/champions/competition/2020/charles-schwab-series-at-bass-pro-big-cedar-lodge/leaderboard.html

Mike Weir has opened his account down in Missouri at the Bass Pro Shops Big Cedar Lodge with a +2 73.

He is T64, nine shots behind the -7 64 lead shared by Tom Lehman and Shane Bertsch. Mike had 16 pars, and a bogey at 5, with another at 18. He drove it well hitting 10/14 fairways and 79% of his greens in regulation, however he is last 79th in putting.

Stephen Ames has WD citing an injury, keep in mind he said last week at the PGA Senior Players that his fitness was suffering after 5 months off.

Alena Sharp stars, Henderson struggles at windswept AIG Womens Open.. live scoring

AIG Women's Open leaderboard https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/aigwomensopen/leaderboard

It was quite a morning for Alena Sharp at  the AIG Women's Open. With the wind howling from the SW it's right in the players faces for the first 6 holes. Remember this week pars are great, bogey's are good, just stay away from the big numbers is key.

Alena would have been nervous enough paired with Dame Laura Davies, then even more so when she drove it OB. Still she recovered with a double bogey 6, then birdied 4 and 5, a rare feat this morning, and took 3 bogey's to go out in 39. After a bogey at 10, Alena had a great run of 4 birdies and all the rest pars for 32 and her E 71 which had the clubhouse lead for most of Thursday.

Brooke Henderson couldn't have picked a worse day to return to competitive golf after 5 months away, a howling SW wind at Royal Troon and not unexpectedly she struggled, in particular with her putter, shooting +6 77 T91.

Like so many she went out into the wind in 40 with 2 doubles and a bogey, one birdie. She added 3 more bogey's coming in, managed a birdie at the par 5 16th for 37.

There are only 4 below par so far today, the wind persists and Friday is expected to be worse with rain mixed in.

German Sophia Popov is the clubhouse leader at -1 70, and American Amy Olson is closing her round at -3 as I write.

Veteran Catriona Matthew has delighted the Scots with her E 71

Thursday tee times for The Northern Trust, including 4 Canadians..

Thursday tee times/pairings The Northern Trust https://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/the-northern-trust/tee-times.html

Being played at TPC Boston where Tiger has won and been top 3 three times and is 108 under par over 40 rounds, the Northern Trust is the first of 3 weeks of Fed Ex Cup playoffs and an obscene $15m bonus to the eventual winner. Tiger and Rory are the only 2 players to win twice.

Click on my link above for tee times for Adam Hadwin, Corey Connors, Nick Taylor and Mac Hughes

Jon Rahm the recent world #1 at 23 says "I don't play for the money, I've never played golf for the money, I play for the enjoyment of the game and the competition of winning

What he didn't say is that is because he already has so much of it he could sit on the beach with all his friends and family for the rest of his life without so much as a worry. That of course is the same story for all the top players, so why throw $15m as well as the prize money at them, especially this year with an extra $10 million already being awarded to the top 10 on the points list after the regular season ended.

Such are the perks of the world's top golfers.

Tee times/pairings for a stormy AIG Women's Open

AIG Women's Open Thursday tee times/pairings https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/aigwomensopen/leaderboard

Surrounded by a cloud of criticism for slow play by some of it's members, the LPGA has moved across Scotland to the SW coast to Royal Troon in Ayrshire for the AIG Women's Open' with many of it's stars returning from COVID isolation.

Dame Laura Davies will hit the 1st tee shot at 630am on Thursday, and there is stormy weather in the forecast. Many of the women have rallied to have the " British" Open played on the same links course rota as the men, and Davies has led the way. She will now add Troon to her bucket list.

Brooke Henderson will return to play after a 5 month absence, so we'll see what shape her game is in, and Alena Sharp will join her.

Danielle Kang with her 2 consecutive wins, just missed the playoff last week by a shot, is the betting favourite with the British bookies. Inbee Park has returned although several other top Koreans have not,  Lexi Thompson, the Korda sisters to name a few are back in the field.

Weather : There will be a stiff wind blowing all week up to 40kph, with lots of rain in the forecast, so scoring will be at a premium, so will patience. This will be a real test for this field.

Monday morning shag bag. Weirsy top 10, results, final scoreboards

Bridgestone Senior Players final leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/champions.html

While Jerry Kelly was making a hole in one at  the 12th on his way to winning the Bridgestone Senior Players at -3, the rest of the field were battling just to beat par.

Kelly (69) was one of only 2 players to do it on the vaunted south course at Firestone CC. Second place finisher Scott Parel (70) was the other at -1.

Mike Weir certainly had his moments both good and bad in his first Senior major, finishing T10, +5 72 70 71 72. He began strongly racing out to -4 and the lead on Thursday, and he finished strong as well with birdies at 17 and 18 yesterday. He didn't drive the ball in the fairway until the 9th hole yesterday resulting in 3 bogey's, he ended with only 22/56 or 39%, but was T3 in birdies with 13 and 4th in putting on the week. Another gutsy performance from Mike.

Stephen Ames T48 +15 73 75 77 70. David Morland T56 +17, 76 75 72 74.

Jim Herman rose from the also rans of the PGA Tour with a 61 on Saturday and then 63 for a -21 final on Sunday to jump from 192 to 54 in the Fed Ex Cup to make next week's playoffs which begin with the Northern Trust in Boston.

Roger Sloan started strong, 62 70 68 71 -9 T31, Michael Gligic 67 69 67 72 -5 T56

Young Sam Horsfield has turned his European Tour career around with 2 wins in 3 weeks, this time in the dark after a 2 hour T'Storm delay, 67 64 68 67 -18 at the Celtic Classic. He's an Englishman who lives near Ian Poulter in Florida, and in fact is managed by Poulter's caddie. He will now be eligible for the US Open.

Canadian Aaron Cockerill had a 67 67 weekend to finish T14 -11.

Stacy Lewis wins the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open.. final scoreboard

Ladies Scottish Open final scoreboard https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/aberdeen-standard-investments-ladies-scottish-open/leaderboard

I wish I could have watched it as Stacy Lewis birdied the 1st playoff hole to win the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open, however I can assure you she has !

After watching on the Golf Channel most of this morning, and griping to myself at the awful pace of play, particularly the little American, Jennifer Song who dawdles on the tee box, and just has a putting preparation routine that needs a telling off, not to mention all this marking every short putt and waiting.

She wasn't alone, anyhow as a result 11am est arrives with the 4 players all tied at -5,  Stacy (72), Azahara Munoz (73), Cheyenne Knight (70) and the Dane, Emily Kristine Pedersen (68) teeing off down the 18th and with no warning the Golf Channel on Rogers cuts to a Feherty repeat !!

I assume they ran out of satellite time, or whatever, my point is if the LPGA/LET would get these gals to pick up the pace, we'd have seen Stacy winning her 13th career event, and had time for interviews and analysis.

By the way, Stacy who turned pro in 2008 has won $13,135,573. This was her first win since 2017 the Cambia Portland Classic.

Note: Danielle Kang who had won the 2 previous weeks T5 -4 just a shot out of the playoff.

The ladies now get in their luxury coaches, or rental cars and travel across Scotland from North Berwick on the east coast to Ayrshire on the south west for the AIG Women's Open (formerly Women's British Open) at Royal Troon which of course is a true links course, unlike this week's man made newly minted Renaissance Club.

Brooke Henderson is coming out of her self isolation to return to play, as I expect will all the South Koreans and several  American stars like Lexi Thompson.

Play returns to the States after next week to Arkansas, then a week off, then to the west coast for the ANA Inspiration major in Rancho Mirage, then Portland for the Cambia Classic, and back to Carlsbad for the Kia Classic.

Roger Sloan near the lead with bad weather approaching at Wyndham Championship.. live scoring

Wyndham Championship Saturday leaderboard  https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/wyndham-championship/leaderboard.html

With round three under way at the Wyndham Championship I'm keeping an eye on Roger Sloan  who opened with a -8 62 to share the lead on Thursday, followed with E 70 on Friday and so far today is -3 through nine for a -11 total.

That has him right amongst the leaders on moving day, for the live scoring click on my link above. The field was out early this morning in three's off split tees to try and beat the bad weather.

Michael Gligic 67 69 -4 is the other Canadian in the field this weekend.

Mike Weir is in contention, Saturday at Bridgestone Senior Players.. Live scoring..

Bridgestone Senior Players leaderboard  https://www.pgatour.com/champions/competition/2020/bridgestone-senior-players-championship/leaderboard.html

The South course at Firestone is legendary, the host of many great moments in golf and dubbed "The Monster" by Arnold Palmer after he took a triple bogey on the 600+ yard 16th during the 1960 PGA Championship.

This week the best the PGA Tour Champions field can do going into today's 3rd round of the Bridgestone Senior Players, is one player under par, Jerry Kelly and he leads a bunched leaderboard by 3 shots at -2.

Yesterday Mike Weir who is nicely placed T6 +2, had a very good round of E 70. Having shot a struggling 40 on the back nine on Thursday, he was off the 10th to begin Friday, and played it 4 strokes better at 36, then made the turn with a birdie on 10  where he took a double on Thursday, and followed with 8 straight pars for 34 and that 70.

He is playing today with a guy you may remember, Dicky Pride, and the wild man Woody Austin at 11.50am off the 1st tee in the 4th last group.

Stephen Ames begins today 73 75 +8 and David Morland is having a tough time like so many, 76 75 +11.

Remember when you are watching this is the first major of the year for the Senior circuit so the course is tough, birdies are rare, par is good and so is bogey at times on this par 70, tight tree lined course, with penal rough for the first cut, and worse further in. The greens are fast and tricky, made worse by some pin placements.

Anyone who has a banner day and posts a 66 will charge up the leaderboard.

Sam Horsfields streak continues at the Celtic Classic .. Live Saturday coverage..

European Tour Celtic Classic.. https://www.europeantour.com/european-tour/celtic-classic-2020/leaderboard?round=3

Sam Horsfield kept his head  as he gained a one stroke lead at the halfway mark following a sparkling second round of 64 at the 2020 Celtic Classic.

The Englishman claimed his maiden European Tour title at the Hero Open two weeks ago and he maintained his momentum to sit one shot clear of first round leader Thomas Pieters at The Celtic Manor Resort.
Horsfield kickstarted his surge up the leaderboard courtesy of four consecutive birdies around the turn but it could have been even better for the 23-year-old Florida based player.
He was leading Callum Shinkwin and Andrew Johnston by three shots as he stood at the tee of the penultimate hole of his second round.
However, a wayward tee shot at the 17th found thick rough, which needed two efforts to reach the fringe of the green before three putting for a triple bogey six and dropping back in co-leadership alongside his fellow Englishman.
Horsfield hit back in style though, as he dialled his approach with a five wood to 12 feet and when he drained the eagle putt, he was clubhouse leader at 11 under par.
"It was actually funny, we had the exact same number into 17 at Forest of Arden when I won and hit that shot," Horsfield said.

Roger Sloan shoots 62 to share first round lead at rainy Wyndham Championship.. Live scoring

Wyndham Championship Friday leaderboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/wyndham-championship/leaderboard.html

The Sedgefield CC is reknown for low scoring, and yesterday's weather delayed opening round of the Wyndham Championship was no different.

Canadian Roger Sloan, who has exempt status next year is currently 178th in Fed Ex standings, and with this being the last regular season event before the playoffs, the top 125 will qualify.

He set a personal best -8 62 playing alongside American Tom Hoge who duplicated Sloan's score, with both having chances to go even lower. Earlier in the day, Harold Varner who went to college at nearby East Carolina, set the table with a 62 of his own.

Those three lead the field into today's 2nd round, with 33 players unable to complete their first round due to bad weather, and as I mentioned in my preview there is the chance of more throughout the weekend.

**** For up to the minute action click on my live scoring link above.***

The field has been sent out off split tees beginning at 7am this morning hoping to get round 2 completed and the cut made before the weekend. It is projected at -2.

Other Canadians: Michael Gligic +3 73, Corey Connors -1 69, David Hearn +2 72 are all playing in the late wave today.

A tale of 2 halves for Mike Weir at Bridgestone Senior Players.. Friday scoreboard

Bridgestone Senior Players leaderboard / tee times..https://www.pgatour.com/champions/competition/2020/bridgestone-senior-players-championship/leaderboard.html

Mike Weir raced out with 4 birdies in his first 8 holes to lead the Bridgestone Senior Players at the difficult Firestone GC south course with it's tight fairways, thick rough and tricky greens.

A bogey at the 9th had him out in 32, still leading -3, before a bad break at the par 4 10th when his approach over a greenside bunker was right at the pin, but just caught the thick collar of rough 20 feet from the hole. He chipped out gingerly, missed the putt, missed the comeback for a messy double bogey six, and he'd lost 3 shots in 2 holes, dropping to -1.

On the par 3 12th he got a bad bounce on the green, shooting off into the bunker, now short sided. He splashed out, and rolled right across the green, but saved par with a curling 30 footer.

However a bogey at 13, and 3 more to finish at 16,17 18 brought him in with 40 strokes and a +2 72 T21.

When the day was done, -2 68 was the best score, posted by Miguel Jimenez, Wes Short, Steve Stricker, Jerry Kelly and Aussie Rod Pampling. Only 6 players broke par.

The South course was named The Monster by Arnie Palmer after a triple bogey on the 667 yard par 5 16th in the 1960 PGA Championship.

There are 20 more players within 3 shots of the lead including Bernhard Langer, Ernie Els and Fred Couples.

Then Weir joins 9 more players 4 shots back at +2.

Stephen Ames had 5 bogey's and 2 birdies, out in 36, back in 37 for a +3 73 T30 while David Morland is T53 with +6 76.

Thomas Pieters leads the Celtic Classic, European Tour in Wales.. live scoreboard

European Tour Celtic Classic leaderboard  https://www.europeantour.com/european-tour/celtic-classic-2020/leaderboard?round=1

The European Tour's UK Swing is at Celtic Manor in Newport, Wales for the Celtic Classic this week and Belgian star, Thomas Pieters has the lead after posting an early wave a -7 64.

There are 20 players from 10 different countries within 3 shots of his lead heading into Friday..

Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn is raising money for charity walking from the European Tour HQ in Wentworth near London, to Newport in Wales and is expected to arrive Sunday afternoon. He is taking quite a good natured ribbing regarding his lack of fitness from many in the media.

Celtic Manor's 'Twenty-twenty course" is where Graeme McDowell sunk the winning putt in the 2010 Ryder Cup, as Monty's European squad beat Corey Pavin and the USA 14 1/2 - 13 1/2

Aaron Cockerill the lone Canuck has opened with -1 70.

LPGA Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open.. live leaderboard

Ladies Scottish Open leaderboard https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/aberdeen-standard-investments-ladies-scottish-open/leaderboard

The LPGA has had to jump through all kinds of COVID related hurdles to get the women safely from the USA to Scotland for this week's Ladies Scottish Open sponsored by Aberdeen Standard Investments, and as a result some top players are not attending, like Brooke Henderson who remains safely at home in Smiths Falls, Ontario.

They are on Scotland's Golf Coast (NE) at the relatively new links style Renaissance Club in North Berwick where early rain has postponed the start, and the wind is blowing as round one gets underway.

Latest :With 27 players returning early on Friday to finish their 1st rounds a pair of Danes, Nicole Broch Larsen -4 68 is the leader with country man Emily Kristen Pedersen leading a huge pack at -3 69

Alena Sharp is in the field with +1 72. T33..

American Danielle Kang has won her last two events and is grabbing the early headlines with her shot at the triple. She opened E 71 claiming like most Californian's she needs to learn links golf...duh

Scotland with it's population of 4 million is entering phase 3 of their fight with COVID, so all precautions have been taken to keep the field in a safe bubble, with no fans of course.

Some of my colleagues in Scotland aren't all that pleased that their Ladies Scottish Open isn't at the old traditional North Berwick GC founded in 1832,  as opposed to the new American links style, tricked up Renaissance Club.

Next week they move from Scotland's east coast to Royal Troon on the west coast in Ayrshire for the major,  AIG Women's Open, where I expect a full field including Brooke Henderson and the top Koreans to be in the field.

ThursdayTee times\ pairings soggy Wyndham Championship

PGA Tour Wyndham Championship Thursday tee times / pairings https://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/wyndham-championship/tee-times.htm

It's back to the" regular" season on the PGA Tour if there is such a thing anymore, as the field moves from the PGA Championship across America the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro NC at the par 70 Sedgefield CC where J.T Boston 65 65 66 62 -22 edged Webb Simpson for his first Tour win.

Mac Hughes and Corey Connors both T22 at -13 last year and Mike Weir recovered from an opening 76 to make the cut, but finished last. This year David Hearn, Michael Gligic, Roger Sloan and Corey Connors make up the Canadian contingent.

The "featured" pairing of Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose are off #10 at 7.50am. Guys like Tommy Fleetwood and Danny Willett who have put up with the 14 day quarantine from England are sticking around to play, Sergio Garcia is in the field and I'm watching out for Paul Casey who narrowly lost last week and T13 here last year.

Carolina has been hit hard by the COVID return, and on Sunday morning North Carolina survived a 5.1 magnitude earthquake, the worst since 1916. It was felt the most along it's Virginia border to the north.

Greensboro is further south from the epi centre but still was affected by the shock waves.

Weather : It does not look good, warm muggy with rain and T'Storms forecast for every day, especially Saturday.

Morikawa and the young guns steal the spotlight at the PGA Championship... final scoreboard

PGA Championship final scoreboard https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/pga-championship/leaderboard.html

A small group of officials, media  assembled beside the 18th green, to politely applaud young Californian, Collin Morikawa hoist then bobble the PGA Championship,  Wanamaker Trophy, almost as big as he is, after his stunning round of -6 64, on top of his stunning round of -5 65 on Saturday for a weekend 129 strokes and -13 total took the spotlight away from the big boys, in particular Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson of whom reams had been written, countless hours had been opined without the pay off most predicted.

DJ didn't disgrace himself at all, T2 69 67 65 68 -11, he was just beaten by the wirey little 23 year old kid who was in school just over a year ago and was in just his 2nd major. So it goes in golf now. Young guys from all over the world have many more places to play than even veteran 43 year old Paul Casey T2 (68 67 68 66 -11) did, not just in America, but in Europe, Asia, India, Korea, Japan, China and down under in Australia and New Zealand. There, can play competitive golf, unlike just 25 years ago.

A word of praise for Paul Casey, who was tied for the lead standing on the 17th tee, until he watched Morikawa's shot of the day as he drove the 294 yard 16th and made the eagle to clinch the title. It was his best shot of winning a major, the quiet Englishman, now like so many living in Florida, is as nice a guy as you could meet.

Koepka, who chose to play in Europe after college to hone his game and in his words "grow up" before returning to the PGA Tour had a bad front nine with 4 bogey's 39 to fall out of the race, finally T29 with a 74, and is taking some heat from scribes for prodding DJ on Saturday with "I've got 4 he's got 1" which is golf's version of trash talking.

There was Morikawa's southern California college rival,  Matthew Wolff with the funky swing, right behind him T4 69 68 68 65 -10, surely these two and Jon Rahm T13,  Haotong Li T17 -6 and Scottie Scheffler T4 -10 and all the other young stars, Si Woo Kim, T13, Daniel Berger T13, Cameron Champ T10,  Xander Schauffele T10, Byeong Hun An T22 just to name a few will make it difficult for any one player to dominate the way Jack and Arnie and Lee did, or Norman, or Faldo, or of course Tiger.

In the eerie quiet of Harding Park, it was an exciting Sunday afternoon, 10 players shared the lead at some point. It's hard to get excited about golf, or any other sports really, who's only spectators are cardboard cut outs, however as I said yesterday, there were so many storylines on Sunday, and like a good mystery movie we didn't know the outcome until the end.

Mac Hughes and  Adam Hadwin ended up T58 at +2.

DJ leads, 12 players within 3 shots Sunday at PGA Championship.. Live scoreboard / tee times

PGA Championship Sunday leaderboard/ tee times https://www.pgatour.com/leaderboard.html

Yesterday there were 36 International players who made the cut of top 70 and ties, same today, except only 4 are in contention, within 12 shots of the lead held  by Dustin Johnson at -9 after his 8 birdie 65.

Veteran Englishmen Paul Casey is quietly 68,67,68 -7, Justin Rose 66 68 70 -6 as is Tommy Fleetwood 70 64 70 and from Australia Jason Day 65 69 70.

I couldn't keep track of the lead yesterday, I think 8 guys were in it or had a share, before DJ came out on top. Walter Hagen won 4 in a row in the 20's, it hasn't happened since so Koepka at -7 has a chance for three, despite 3 consecutive bogey's late in his 69 yesterday.

Rookie American Scottie Scheffler was on the Korn Ferry Tour last year, but is having a hell of a week 66 71 65 -8, Cameron Champ can't even use his enormous power and length on Harding Park is also -8, 71 64 67.

Then consider another young stud Collin Morikawa at -7 69 69 65, and Bryson DeChambeau with all his young bluster at -6 68 70 66, and Tony Finau who has done everything but win since COVID, also -6 67 70 67, and Daniel Berger -6 67 67 70.

So don't ask me to pick the winner, anyone of these guys are perfectly capable but I do believe the champion will come from these twelve. Guys like Haotong Li, yesterday's leader now at -5 could shoot -6 64 today and still be at -11, and you have to think one of the twelve will get to -12 at least.

Canadians Adam Hadwin 68 71 70 -1 is off at 1030am (pst) with American Denny McCarthy while Mac Hughes 73 68 69 E is at 1010am with Aussie Cameron Smith.

Former wonderkid Jordan Spieth was first off at 7am with JT Boston. Spieth was 2nd last in this field this morning.

Weather : Another cool San Francisco day, just 13*c early, rising to 20*c with a significant wind up to 30kph from the W during the leaders  round this afternoon.

Hughes, Hadwin join strong International field on Saturday at the PGA Championship.. Live scoring

PGA Championship Saturday tee times/ leaderboard https://www.pgachampionship.com/leaderboard

The cut fell at +1 late on Friday night allowing the top 70 and ties into the field starting this morning at Harding Park for this PGA Championship.

Thirty-six of them including Mac Hughes 73,68 +1 and Adam Hadwin 68 71 -1 are not from the USA, led by an extremely talented young 25 year old Chinese star Haotong Li 67 65 -8, unknown in America, but a two time winner on the European Tour at the highest level, the Volvo China Open, and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in 2018, beating Rory McIlroy. He was also 3rd at the Open in 2017.

I've watched Haotong over the years, and as Adam Scott, his Presidents Cup team mate, who is also playing this weekend says "He's usually all guns blazing" This week he leads the field in GIR with over 80% accuracy.

Canadians : Corey Connors and Nick Taylor have missed the cut, however Mac Hughes recovered from an opening 73, with -4 68 +1 and Adam Hadwin at -1 is one of 43 players within 7 shots of the lead.

So the weekend, bulging with storylines, none bigger than Brooks Koepka 66,68 leading a pack at -6, looking to become the 3rd man in history to win 3 consecutive PGA Championships. He has a bad hip, requiring on course physio yesterday.

France with veteran Mike Lorenzo Vera at -6, England with Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood (-6), Ryder Cup hero's who battled to the last stroke of the year to determine the Race to Dubai title 2 years ago and don't forget Paul Casey 68 67 -5. Australia with Jason Day 65 69 -6 are all International players T2.

Alex Noren 67 69 -4 from Sweden, Bernd Weisberger 68 68 -4 from Germany, Dylan Frittelli 70 67 -3 from South Africa, Si Woo Kim 69 68 -3 from South Korea, Hideki Matsuyama 70 67 -3 from Japan are all stars in their own countries who will make up the story of this Saturday moving day.

Weather: Cool 19*c the high, and blustery winds from SW with no rain for both days, Harding Park as it dries out will be firmer and faster. Jason Day says the SW wind is a cross wind both left to right and right to left on many holes.

I will be watching guys like  Justin Thomas, Louis Oosthuizen, Rory and Tiger who will be out early with the calmest conditions and perfect greens to set the table.

Mac Hughes is first off at 8.10 playing either as a single or with a marker. Adam Hadwin at 12.20 with Dutch star Joost Luiten.
