With the temperature flirting with 100*F under the clear blue high skies of Johannesburg, South Africa's Jaco Van Zyl continued the fine run of form he was displaying leading up to Christmas and New Year with a fine -7 65 to take the first round lead in the BMW South African Open on a stunningly beautiful Glen Dower GC.
While he has yet to win on the European Tour although he has been 2nd four times, he is well established as one of his country's best with 13 wins on the Sunshine Tour, and remember he T8 Alfred Dunhill Championship before the break.
He has a one shot lead over countryman Shaun Norris. From the late wave, two more South Africans, Jbe Kruger and Keith Horne were the best with -5 67's to move into T3. Estanislao Goya from Argentina is in the group at -4 68, which includes Daniel Brooks from England, Nicolo Ravano from Italy, along with a fully bearded Retief Goosen and Justin Walters.
Host Ernie Els who has won this title 5 times had a birdie at 16, an eagle at 17, but missed a short one for par at 18 to finish at +1 73.
