PGA Tour Sony Open final leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/sony-open-in-hawaii/leaderboard.html
Hands up anyone who knows anything about Fabian Gomez? Sounds like he was named after a famous singer who plays a mean game of tennis..
Well he is a great story and he is also the proud champion of this years Sony Open. One of golf's ultimate grinders the 37 year old Argentinian grew up caddying at home, has played on mini tours all over the world and in fact won the St Jude Classic last year so was already in the Masters. Now he will most likely represent Argentina with Emiliano Grillo in Rio at the Olympics.
He earned this win with his seven straight birdies starting on #6 but after a couple of bogey's he finished like a champion with a great mid iron to 12 feet for a birdie on the par-3 17th, and then a clutch a 25 footer for another birdie from the fringe at the 18th, finishing -20 260 to get into a playoff with Brandt Snedeker who made a birdie of his own at 18 for a 66 -20.
They went back to play 18 in the playoff. Snedeker will be kicking himself as he missed a 12 footer for the win on the first playoff hole, both settling for par 5's, then when Gomez made a smart birdie the second time around, Snedeker missed a 10 footer to tie.
A tip of the cap to little Zack Blair who fell a shot short at -19, but he will take a lot of confidence away from this week and he had the shot of the week on his final hole, a 280 yard three wood that he smashed and ran right up to 10 feet, just missing the eagle putt that would deservedly put him in the playoff.
Graham DeLaet was as good as anyone from Friday onward and he finished T7 -14 73 62 65 66 in his first outing in 2 months.
Other Canadian scores : Adam Hadwin T67 71 66 69 69 -5 Nick Taylor 74 69 68 67 75 -1 David Hearn MDF 65 71 71
