The first day of fourball matches in this Ryder Cup format between Europe and Asia are now complete in the stifling heat of Kuala Lumpur and captain Darren Clarke is delighted with the start his team led by veterans Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood have made, leading by 4.5 points to 1.5.
Dressed in light blue shirts and white slacks and hats they won four of today's six fourball matches, with Asia taking one and the other ending all square.
Ian Poulter and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger put Europe's first point on the board after beating Anirban Lahiri and Jeung Hun Wang 4 and 3 in the opening match, followed quickly by Ross Fisher and Kristoffer Broberg coasting to a 6 and 4 victory over Prayad Marksaeng and K.T Kim to go up 2-0.
Asia got on the board when the strong pairing of rookie Byeong-hun An and veteran Thongchai Jaidee rallied with wins on 4 straight holes on the back nine to beat Englishmen Danny Willett and Matt Fitzpatrick 3 and 1.
Europe went up 3-1 when the bearded Shane Lowry and Andy Sullivan beat Wu Ashun and Shingo Katayama 2 and 1. The pairing of Søren Kjeldsen and Victor Dubuisson, halved their match with home favourites Malaysians Danny Chia and Nicholas Fung, but Dubuisson's fitness is a question mark as he was clearly favouring his knee.
Lee Westwood and Chris Wood wrapped up the day as they narrowly beat Kiradech Aphibarnrat and SSP Chawrasia 2 and 1 to complete a commanding day for Europe.
