PGA Tour : The American Express Results
Overcoming a case of nerves Austrian Sepp Straka with the help of his chasing pack won the American Express comfortably with a score of 65 64 64 70 -25 263, two shots clear of Justin Thomas on the newly renovated Pete Dye Stadium course.
The only two bogeys he made all week were on the 70th and 72nd when he already had a 4 shot lead
"I was a bag of nerves for that last nine to be honest" said Straka in his post round interview.
Only 3 players have won a 72 hole stroke play PGA Tour event, going bogey free for the week, Lee Trevino 1974, JP Poston 2019 and Tom Kim 2022.
It is his 3rd PGA Tour win, a trip to Augusta and the PGA Championship, two years exemption, all eight signature events are amongst the baubles and of course $1,540,000.
The key to his win was "the best round of my life" a Friday 64 on the Stadium Course which he played in -10 for the week, better than anyone.
New ownership of PGA West in 2020 decided to stiffen the test that Dye had in mind for his Stadium Course and to make a long story short they dug up the greens and renovated them, making them larger and firmer.
For Thomas 2nd, 67 64 68 66 -23, Justin Lower T3, 63 66 68 69 -22 and Jason Day 64 66 67 69 -22 it was a case of could've, should've, but neither got on top of Straka all day
Meanwhile Canada's Nick Taylor continued his strong start to 2025 after winning the Sony Open last week he posted a T12, 65 66 73 67 -17 ($169,400) with a tough Saturday 73 spoiling his chance of back to back wins.
Still he is playing well as the tour heads for the Farmers Insurance at Torrey Pines in San Diego then Pebble Beach which he won in 2020 with a score of -19 268 and then the Phoenix Open where he is the defending champion.
The other Canadian Mac Hughes finished his week T58, 70 68 66 74 ($19,712)
