PGA Tour : The Farmers Insurance Leaderboard

The high Santa Ana winds that have been howling across southern California spreading devastating fires finally hit Torrey Pines this afternoon suspending play at this Farmers Insurance Championship with play in round 2 underway.

After a 90 minute suspension when balls were blowing off the greens play resumed and the scoring soared with only 11 players shooting under par. The scoring average on the more exposed North was 75.2 which was 5 shots higher than 70.5 on Wednesday.

Play was eventually halted due to darkness and 12 groups will return early to finish before the cut, projected at +1 will be made.

Ludvig Aberg 63 75 -6 and Lanto Griffin 66 72 -6 are the leaders in the cluhouse with Danny Walker next 65 74 -5.

Two of the favourites Hideki Matsuyama and Jason Day are both T26 -1.

Canadians

Taylor Pendrith T42 69 75 E

Adam Svensson T71 74 72 +2

Ben Silverman T81 73  (has to finish)

Winds are forecast to diminish over night but will still be 15-20mph in the gusts.

The rest of the weekend is manageable weather wise with winds diminishing.

Why are so many stars not playing??

Money !!  After the winners from 2024 played the select 60 man field at the Sentry on Maui worth $20m many went to the Sony Open with regular prize money, with wives and families on holidays in Hawaii.

Next the west coast swing beginning at the American Express which is not a signature but for the pros who are already out there at the Sony this relatively quiet pro-am with 3 easy courses in perfect weather is a nice way to ease into the year.

Now they make a choice, mostly based on money.

The Farmers is not a signature, but next week at Pebble Beach is, then the WM Phoenix Open isn't but is a big fun event, then the Genesis probably back at Torrey Pines due to fires in LA is.

So the big names skip this week to play 3 weeks in a row, 2 of them signature events before moving on to the Florida swing.
