On a course he calls he favourite place in the world 25 year old world #6, Swede Ludvig Aberg put on a driving display as good as it gets resulting in 16/18 greens in regulation combined with a hot putter to post his best ever first round -9 63 on the coastal North course at Torrey Pines.

He leads the field by 2 shots over rookie American Danny Walker -7 65 and Hayden Springer -7 65.

Aberg didn't win in 2024 but remember he was 2nd at the US Open, Pebble Beach and the BMW Championship before under going knee surgery in the Fall.

"I like a course where I can hit a lot of drivers like I did today and will tomorrow on the South course" which is regarded as the tougher of the two playing to an average of 72.5 as opposed to 70.2.

The Santa Ana winds predicted to blow throughout southern California until Thursday did not show up in another clear blue, stunning day in San Diego along the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean.

With most of the top pros missing, Hideki Matsuyama at owgr #4 shot -4 68 on the south while defending champion Matthieu Pavon came in with a 73 also on the south. Another of the favourites Max Homa from California shot an unusual +5 77 SC.

Canadians

Taylor Pendrith T29 -3 69 NC

Ben Silverman T100 +1 73 SC

Adam Svensson T117 +2 73 SC

It is worth noting that the Genesis event at Riviera in 3 weeks has been postponed because of the damage to that fires that have damaged the Pacific Palisades community of LA near the course may well be moved to Torrey Pines.
