US Open : Oakmont CC Leaderboard Tee Times
JJ Spaun you may remember came out of the blue taking Rory to a Players Championship playoff earlier this year, before losing the 3 hole aggregate without getting much of a chance, but along with the $2.5m 2nd place prize, he won the respect of his peers, and himself.
After a marathon day 1 of this 125th US Open in ideal weather, Oakmont as expected posed another stern examination for the assembled class, and after a day's best bogey free -4 66, with a gold star 4 birdie 31 front nine, Spaun topped the tests by a shot from South African veteran of the Sunshine /DP World Tour's, Thirston Lawrence who mixed 6 birdies with a bogey and a double for his -3 67.
With Mother Nature smiling, bags of sunshine shone down on these fabled Pennsylvania links, with just a breeze, still only 10 players managed to break par which remember is a great score, former Canadian Open champion Bob MacIntyre tweeted "the best round of even par golf in my life"
The 74 for Rory and 73 for Scheffler were the norm on the day where the field average was 74.64. Consider Sepp Straka 78, Justin Rose 77, Justin Thomas 76, there were 16 scores in the 80's.
Canadians did well.
