Wet, soft Quail Hollow turns leaderboard upside down.. Round 1 results

 PGA ChampionshipLeaderboard  Tee Times

After 4 days of cloudy skies and rain, Quail Hollow, always reknown as a long tough test for the pros, was wet, making the rough lush, fairways soft and sub air dried greens hard to reason..

As a result coupled with the PGA's decision not to allow clean and place led to an upside down leaderboard after 18 holes at this 2nd major of the year.

Weather April 11: Wet and windy with thunderstorm risk expected in southern Ontario | INsauga

Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy had a case of the left's off the tee, usually his difference maker, hitting only 4 of 14 fairways on his way to T98 +3 74, he owns Quail Hollow with 4 wins.

Look at these scores.. Phil Mickelson T148 +8 79, Dustin Johnson former world #1 now a shadow of himself playing in obscurity on LIV, T140 +7 78, Mac Hughes off a T2 last week and a course member T140 +7 78, Jordan Spieth looking for the Grand Slam, T 129 +5 76, Sergio Garcia, what ever happened to him on LIV, T113 +4 75 as is Brooks Koepka.

At the other end of the leaderboard local, Ryan Gerard made two late bogey' but still held the clubhouse lead -5 66 with Aussie Cam Davis.

Late in the day the lead changed with -7 64 by Jhonattan Vegas, hardly heard of recently with the round of the day.

However the rest of the field is bunched with better hot weather ahead on Friday and for the weekend. There are 59 players within 5 shots of -5 including guys like Rahm -1, Scheffler -2, DeChambeau E, Hatton -3, Donald -4, Fox last week's surprise winner -4.

Canadians

Taylor Pendrith T20 -2 69 (eagle 2 par 4 3rd from 168yds)

Corey Conners, Adam Hadwin T74 +2 73

Nick Taylor T126 +5 76

Mac Hughes T138 +7 78

The feature group McIlroy Scheffler and Schauffele is out late on Friday at 1,47pm off #1 to see what they can do to make sense of this topsy turvy opening round.
