The Masters : Tee Times Leaderboard
I agree with my long time radio partner Bob Weeks, on our Fairways golf show at the Fan590, "Corey Conners is playing the best golf of his life" right now.
The quiet 33 year old from Listowel, a small town 1hour 40minutes NW of Toronto, has grown in stature to 21st in the world, 6th in the Fed Ex Cup standings.
He began his season in Hawaii with T5 at the Sentry, but after an inauspicious west coast swing his game aided and abetted by a new putter came alive with T3 at Bay Hill, followed by T6 at the Players, T8 at Valspar and T18 Valero which he has won twice in Texas.
He opened Thursday with 66 at Augusta, where he birdied of his last 4 holes, and more importantly backed it up with 66 yesterday with a bogey free front nine 34, and a 2 birdie 2 bogey back for 36, 70 good enough T3 with Rory McIlroy who bounced back into contention 72 66 both at -6. They are in the penultimate pairing.
Typically Canadian he was modest when answering what he thought his chances of winning to join Mike Weir, " I am just going to trust my game, try and have some more fun. It is hard enough winning out here, especially around this place"
This is his 8th trip to Augusta National where he has been in the top 10 three times, 2020, 21, 22, and has a chance to make that 4, or better again this year.
Nick Taylor has also made the cut 73 71 E.
Justin Rose, joined me and Bob on Fairways away back in 1998 from Hook in England as a 17 year old, when he finished T4 as an amateur to Mark O'Meara who had won the Masters that year as well. This was his reaction when he famously pitched in from the semi rough at the 72nd.
Now a grey haired veteran, with a US Open, Ryder Cup glory, and an Olympic Gold Medal on his glittering resume his 65 71 -8 will see him in the final pairing with a much improved, more mature, respectful 31 year old Bryson DeChambeau 69 68 -7. The LIV golfer was also T1 last year after 36 holes, finishing T6.
Young gun, American Matt McCarthy will play with Shane Lowry both T5 with 71 68 -5 followed by temperamental Tyrrell Hatton 69 70 -5 and pre tournament, defending champion favourite, Scottie Scheffler 68,71 who uncharacteristically made 4 bogey's on his back nine.
MISSED CUT
This year the cut fell at +2. Most sadly Bernhard Langer, capping his glorious Masters career just missed a 12 footer at the 18th to miss out by a shot. He was given a standing ovation.
Other notables like Dustin Johnson, Sergio, Freddy, Brooks, Adam Scott, Mickelson, Bob MacIntyre, were all joined by Mike Weir and Taylor Pendrith missing the weekend.
WEATHER
Saturday will be mostly sunny, cool (60's f) breezy, with a slight chance of a passing shower in the afternoon.
Sunday, sunny, low 70's, light breeze, beautiful Georgia day.
