Effortless 65 has McIlroy leading WGC Mexican Open.. Connors T4.. Live scoring

On an opening day at the WGC Mexican Open where a breeze, the tight tree lined fairways and poa annua greens at the Chapultepec GC kept all but 18 players from breaking par 71, Rory McIlroy was at his best, driving the ball miles in the thin air, striking beautifully controlled irons, and making putts with a return to an old faithful putter. He used only 26.

An eagle and 5 birdies later his -6 65 leads the pack by 2 heading into today's 2nd round. The course is at 7800 feet above sea level, and the fairways were soft and holding.

" I took advantage of the way I drove the ball today. With the fairways being so soft I just teed it up and launched it" was Rory's explanation.

Last year at -16 268, he lost by 5 shots to Dustin Johnson, who opened this year with +5 76. With a win here this year Rory would have won all four WGC events, like DJ.

Corey Connors is T4 after his -3 68, which was spoiled a little by a 3 putt bogey from 10 feet at the 15th.

T2 at -4 67 are Bubba Watson and Justin Thomas. Last week's winner at Riviera, Adam Scott opened with +3 74.

McIlroy prides himself with his consistency, he has had 5 straight top 5 finishes and 14/15 last PGA Tour events inside the top seven. That is the biggest improvement in his game, leading to all his honours last year.
