Amongst the many that met the news that Tiger will be playing this year at Augusta with aplomb must be world #1 Rory McIlroy !
He was the story going into next week, a chance to become the youngest player at 25 to hold the Grand Slam, possibly to hold all four at once, but now that has all changed. Even if Phil Mickelson or Jordan Speith go on to win in Houston, Tiger will now become the absolute focus for the panting media hordes, and he will continue to be whether he plays like a diddy or a champion..
He hasn’t won the Masters in 10 years and missed last year because of back surgery. Various reports are circulating that he has been playing very well at his club, the Medalist, but the facts of the matter are that he hasn’t won a tournament since the Bridgestone Invitational in 2013, is now at #104 in the world and hasn't finished under par in over a year.
In his last two startling appearances he shot an unheard of 82 in Pheonix where he MC
and he then hacking and duffing chips, he finally had to give in to his back at Torrey Pines.
Sadly in my opinion, it doesn't matter which Tiger shows up, he will be THE story either way, but that is good news for the rest of the field, none more so that Rory who can now go about his business in the Tiger's shadow..
