A Kiwi, Welshman and Englishman lead in Shanghai..

European Tour Volvo China Open scoreboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2015/tournamentid=2015030/leaderboard/index.html

England’s David Howell who won the last of his 5 European Tour events in 2013 continued his excellent start to the year as he grabbed a share of the first round lead at the Volvo China Open overnight.

He was 2nd in Johannesburg earlier this year and 4th in last week’s Shenzhen International, and went out in the late wave and shot -4 68 at the Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club in Shanghai to join Wales’ Bradley Dredge and New Zealand’s Michael Hendry at the top of the leaderboard. Dredge and Hendry played in the in the morning, while Howell had to contend with a slight breeze in the afternoon

Watching this overnight it is obvious it’s the firmness of the greens that is making it difficult for everyone. It never seemed easy for the players to get the ball close to the hole with slopes on the greens and the firmness.

Defending champion Alex Levy -3 69 was one behind the leaders, alongside fellow Frenchman Julien Quesne and Australian Marcus Fraser.

I was watching Robert Karlsson, now ranked 148th who you will remember was Europe's #1 player in 2008, played in the Ryder Cup and paired with Henrik Stenson led Sweden to a World Cup win. In 2009 he started suffering from blurred vision and was forced to take 6 months off. He bounced back with 2 of his 11 wins in 2010, but has been struggling to regain that form ever since. He shot +3 75.
