Long gone are the days when a pro could give his caddie 50 quid to put on either himself or an opponent with Ladbrokes. Lee Trevino alledgedly placed that amount with an on course bookie on Jack Nicklaus to win the Open Championship in 1970. Even the legendary amateur Bobby Jones bet when he played, occasionally with his pairing partner during tournaments.
Of the 99 (maybe 100) or more entries at Augusta this year, Rory McIlroy is the 6-1 favorite to win so far next week. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods' dreadful form has him at 40-1, even though he hasn't declared his intention yet..
Jordan Speith is getting plenty of action in Las Vegas as is Patrick Reed who has been bet down from 100-1 to 25-1. Of course a big week in Houston by any of my listed favourites will alter the odds significantly...
Warning picking the winner of a golf is like finding a needle in a haystack at times, although the Masters I find the easiest as it always throws up the same cast of characters. For example Bernhard Langer at 55 still finished in the top 10 last year and he won the last of his two titles at Augusta in 1993. From another era, Jose Maria Olazabal, Nick Faldo, Ben Crenshaw, Seve, Jack and Arnie were always in the mix...more recently Tiger of course, Phil, Bubba, Scott, and don't forget Angel Cabrera are always in contention more often than not..
Rory's 6-1 certainly isn't based on his Florida swing where he only broke 70 once, however when he is driving at his best as he did last summer with his 3 straight wins including the Open Championship and the PGA, there is no one close, but right now that's a pretty big if.... bigger that 6-1 if you ask for my $10 spot...
