Scott Piercy, who last won at our RBC Canadian Open in Hamilton in 2012, was off the PGA Tour for six months last year while recovering from elbow surgery and said he still hadn’t felt quite right before arriving in Houston on Tuesday, but after a marathon 13 hour practice session found something, which turned out to be a course tying -9 63 to take a 2 shot lead over Alex Cjeka and JB Holmes on a very soft GC of Houston.
These pros torched it on Thursday in fact you have to go down the leaderboard to T108 to find anyone over par. The soft greens allowed them to be more aggressive and shoot at the pins, and as we know anytime these guys get soft greens, scoring goes low.
Graham DeLaet was one who did with a fine -5 67 T8 to keep his hopes of Augusta alive. Other Canadians; Nick Taylor T108 +1 73, David Hearn T28 -3 69, Adam Hadwin T50 -2 70, Roger Sloan T88 E 72...
Phil Mickelson, Luke Guthrie, Charles Howell III and Houston’s Shawn Stefani each shot a 66 and trail Piercy by three strokes.
