This week the playoffs continue in Boston, while the Euro tour has a strong field in the Swiss Alps

Last year: Charley Hoffman closed with a 9-under 62 for a five-shot victory over Geoff Ogilvy, Jason Day and Luke Donald. Hoffman tied the tournament record at 22-under 262.

Last week: Dustin Johnson beat the rain and everyone else at The Barclays in the playoff opener, shortened to 54 holes because of Irena. He shot a 29 on the front nine in the Saturday finish and had a 6-under 65 to beat Matt Kuchar by two strokes.

Notes: The top 100 in the FedEx Cup points qualified for the event. The field will be cut to 70 for the BMW Championship on Sept. 15-18 at Cog Hill in Lemont, Ill. and to 30 for the Tour Championship on Sept. 22-25 at East Lake in Atlanta. ... Johnson jumped from 19th to first in the standings with his victory in New Jersey. Kuchar is second, followed by Nick Watney, Webb Simpson and Donald.Tour player Brad Faxon teamed with architect Gil Hanse to rework the Arnold Palmer-designed layout. ... Vijay Singh won in 2004 and 2008, setting the tournament record of 22 under in 2008.

Purse: $2.9 million. Winner’s share: $484,000.

Last year: Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez won the last of his three 2010 titles, beating Italy’s Edoardo Molinari by three strokes.

Last week: Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn won the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in Scotland, birdieing the fifth hole of a playoff with South Africa’s George Coetzee. In cold and windy conditions, Bjorn birdied the par-5 18th three straight time to hold off Coetzee. Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger dropped out on the first extra hole, Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal on the second and England’s Mark Foster on the fourth.

Notes: U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy and  Open winner Darren Clarke are in the field along with Bjorn, Jimenez, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, Matteo Manassero and Louis Oosthuizen. ... Bjorn also won the Qatar Masters in February. ... The tournament opens the points race for the 2013 European Ryder Cup team. ... France’s Benjamin Hebert won the Rolex Trophy last week in Geneva for his third Challenge Tour victory of the year and an immediate European Tour promotion. ... The KLM Open is next week in the Netherlands, followed by the Seve Trophy in France.
