Where they are golfing this week...June 9,2011

St Jude's hospital does such great work mainly because of the millions of dollars the PGA Tour raises every year for them, and they always have a decent field, despite the fact it is the week before the US Open..Lee Westwood will defend his title, and we have 5 Canucks in the field.

On the Nationwide tour in Raleigh NC,  Jon Mills who was T2 last week, then went out and qualified for the US Open leads a Canadian contingent of 4, including former Canadian amateur champion Richard Scott..

The Seniors (Champions Tour) are also in NC, at Conover and Rod Spittle who was T4 last week is playing

6 Canadian women are in the LPGA field in Springfield, Illinois and over in Turin on the European Tour a field with a strong Italian feel to it will contest the Italian Open with 18 year old Matteo "Manny" Manessero being the main attraction..

Defending champion: England's Lee Westwood won his second PGA Tour title, beating Sweden's Robert Karlsson with a birdie on the fourth hole of a playoff. Robert Garrigus blew a three-stroke lead with a triple bogey on the 72nd hole, then dropped out of the playoff with a bogey on the first extra hole. They are paired together for the first two days.

Notes: The U.S. Open is next week at Congressional in Bethesda, Md. … Westwood, ranked No. 2 in the world, is attempting to defend his title. He won the European Tour's Ballantine's Championship in South Korea and the Asian Tour's Indonesian Masters in consecutive weeks in late April and early May. … Geoff Ogilvy, David Toms, Retief Goosen and European stars Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal also are in the field. Garcia qualified for the U.S. Open on Monday, shooting 68-67 at Tunica National, then surviving a seven-man playoff to get one of the last four spots. … Al Geiberger shot the first 59 in PGA Tour history in his 1977 victory at Colonial Country Club. … John Cook had a tournament-record 26-under 258 total in 1996, shooting 64-62-63-69.

Greater Hickory Classic
Site: Conover, N.C.

Course: Rock Barn Golf and Spa, Jones Course (7,090 yards, par 72).
Purse: $1.75 million. Winner's share: $262,500.
Canucks : Rod Spittle
Defending champion: Gary Hallberg won his first Champions Tour title, closing with an 11-under 61 for a one-stroke victory over Fred Couples. Hallberg matched the tournament record at 18-under 198. The event was played in October.

Notes: Fred Funk qualified for the U.S. Open, shooting 67-68 on Monday at Woodmont in Rockville, Md. … Brooks is making his third Champions Tour start. … John Cook has two victories this year, winning the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship in January and the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in April. … Jay Haas won in 2005 and 2009, setting the tournament record in 2009. … The tour is off next week.

Purse: $550,000. Winner's share: $99,000.

Defending champion: John Riegger won the rain-shortened tournament by five strokes for his second Nationwide Tour title. Riegger, then 46, finished 54 holes at 20 under.

Notes:  Four Canucks in the field including Jon Mills who was T2 last week then qualified for the US Open  Mathew Goggin leads the money list with $194,440, followed by Wheatcroft ($146,235) and Ted Potter Jr. ($129,980). The final top 25 will earn 2012 PGA Tour cards. … Hale Irwin designed TPC Wakefield Plantation. … The Wichita Open is next week


EUROPEAN TOUR

Italian Open
Site: Turin, Italy.

Course: Royal Park I Roveri (7,272 yards, par 72).
Purse: $2.2 million. Winner's share: $366,075.
Defending Champion: Sweden's Fredrik Andersson Hed won his first European Tour title, beating England's David Horsey by two strokes.

Notes: With most of the Euro big boys prepping for the US Open next week, some of them including Lee Westwood are at the St Jude Classic it is left to Italian stars Matteo Manassero, Francesco Molinari and Costantino Rocca along with Hed, Darren Clarke, Colin Montgomerie and Thomas Bjorn to give this championship some marquee names.. … The 18-year-old Manassero won the Castello Masters last year to become the youngest winner in European Tour history at 17 years, 188 days. He won the Malaysian Open in April. … Molinari also has two European Tour victories, winning the 2006 tournament in Milan and the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions last November in China. … The Saint Omer Open is next week in France

LPGA State Farm Classic

Course: Panther Creek Country Club (6,746 yards, par 72).
Purse: $1.7 million. Winner's share: $255,000.
Canucks : Meldrum, Sharp, Kane, Sherlock, Shepley, Richdale

Defending Champion: Cristie Kerr won in a Monday finish, beating Anna Nordqvist and Na Yeon Choi by a stroke. Kerr shot 67-67-63-69 to finish at 22 under. She won the LPGA Championship in her next start for the last of her 14 LPGA Tour victories.

Notes: Lincicome and the fourth-ranked Kerr are in the field along with No 1. Yani Tseng, No. 2 Suzann Pettersen, No. 3 Shin, No. 5 Choi, No. 6 I.K. Kim, No. 7 Sun Ju Ahn, No. 8 Karrie Webb, No. 10 Michelle Wie and No. 11 Paula Creamer. … Lincicome jumped nine spots to No. 15 with her victory. … Kerr also won the 2004 tournament at The Rail Golf Course. … Hale Irwin designed Panther Creek. … The tour is off next week.
