I am going to blog Rory in for this historic last nine at the US Open, 40 years since Tony Jacklin was the last Brit to win this championship..
10th Rory stuffs it to 6" on the par 3 playing 175yds Makes birdie now -16
11th Great drive..right down the middle...this is the hardest hole on the course.. his approach to 30' just misses.. par 4... ho hum..
12th par 4 471yds... big drive into a fairway bunker....160 from the fairway bunker... fat.. short right... misses right to left putt, 30 footer. par 4
13th 171 yd par 3.. in at 15' missed putt.made par still -16
14th Par 4 453.. knockdown 3 wood center of the fairway.. mid iron..30' par
15th Par 4 490yds Great drive.. 8 iron to 20' Misses birdie par 4 -16
16th doesn't matter. Rory is going to win...!!
Graeme McDowell just finished at -2... the trophy with Rory goes back to NIreland for the 2nd year in a row...European Tour has the last 5 Majors and the Ryder Cup....wow..
So that's how it ended, hours ago, Rory in a romp, winner of the first of what we all hope will be many majors.
My first recollections of watching golf were in 1960 when there was such a fuss about Arnold Palmer coming over to St Andrews to play in the Open, he lost in appalling weather to Kal Nagle. I have watched and covered both as a writer and broadcaster an awful lot since then, and Rory's performance over the last 4 days was as dominating as Tiger was in 2000 at Pebble Beach..
I don't think he will dominate like Tiger did, but I am glad to have a kid with his tremendous talent coming into his prime while I am here to enjoy him.
