LPGA votes to let gender changed women compete

Facing a law suit from 57-year-old retired police officer Lana Lawless who had what is nowadays called gender-reassignment surgery, ie a sex change operation, LPGA players huddled together last night in Orlando as they prepare for their season ending Tour Championship, and voted to remove the  “female at birth' clause in their constitution that has stopped Lawless and any others like him eh her try to qualify for the LPGA..

Lawless you may remember won the women's Long Drive competition in 2008 before being banned the following year. She is suing them and their sponsors over that decision.

Michelle Ellis, president of the LPGA board says their lawyers are telling them to stay mum on the subject....

LPGA commissioner Michael Whan issued this statement " The players voted in favour of amending the LPGA constitution, eliminating the requirement that competitors must be female at birth,”“Steps will be taken in the coming weeks to make the appropriate changes in the language of the constitution.”

Do you remember someone called Mianne Bagger, a Danish golfer, who was in the same pickle as Lawless a few years ago in Australia, and they decided they'd be nuts not to let her tee it up ( sorry couldn't resist) and the IOC has decided in the past having been similarly confronted, to relent, so precedence has been set.

Not that dear old Lana will ever set foot in an LPGA event at 57, but at least she may now get the chance to compete again against the rest of the gals in the Long Drive competitions where she can put her extra stiff shafts to good use...

Had the born-female clause not been struck down, Lawless’s lawyer, Christopher Dolan said he would have sought an injunction to prevent the LPGA from staging events in California, where its first major tournament of the season, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, is held.
