PGA Tour : Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. Leaderboard
If I said to you Highsmith, Bridgeman, Spaun, McGreevy and Griffin what would you say ?
A big law firm, starting five of a high school basketball team, front five of a rugby scrum, notorious bank robber gang..
Of course none of the above, rather the top 5 on the leaderboard after Sunday's shootout at the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches, most old timers still call the Honda Classic because we can't remember all the rest of the new title!
Yes there was a field of the rank and file this week at TPC National, many, the average fan would not recognize, however the prize they played for is very real.
The winner with the big floppy hat was full value as well, although unexpected. Heck he was even wearing his Korn Ferry Tour blue shirt.
Joe Highsmith a 24 year old from Lakewood, Washington out of Pepperdine, with famous caddie Joe LaCava's son on his bag, barely made the cut that he has missed 3 of this last 5 events, then went on to shoot a career 64 64 to emerge from the 25 guys who all had a shot, to win his first PGA Tour event.
" I putted as well as I ever had, then some" is how he summed up his weekend. "That was the last thing on my mind when I started today"
Now the prizes I mentioned. $1,656,000, next week at the Arnie Palmer Invitational worth $20m instead of the alternate event in Puerto Rico, 2 years fully exempt, the Masters, the PGA Championship, the Players worth $25m and every other signature event this year.
About playing next week " Those are the best players in the world, I don't, especially this year and last, play in the same events with them"
Well humble beginnings he will just have to get used to over the next 2 years !!
