Austin Connelly in contention, European Tour Trophy Hassan II

European Tour Trophy Hassan II leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2018/tournamentid=2018034/leaderboard/index.html#/leaderboard

I was reminded during this year's Masters that Gary Player was the first foreign player to win the coveted Green Jacket in 1961, and was one of only a handful of non Americans in the invited field.

This year there were more foreigners or international players as they are more correctly named than American, such has the game of golf grown since Gary's ground breaking days nearly 60 years ago.

To that theme this week the European Tour with 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett in the field is in Rabat, Morocco playing on the grounds of his Royal highness at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.

The only thing most Americans know about Morocco is Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's movie Road to Morocco !!, and that was in the Paramount movie studios, Hollywood, California.

The clubhouse leader with round 2 well underway and the late wave on course, is former Spanish star, Alvaro Quiros at 67 70 -7. Long hitting Quiros is back with his old coach Jose Rivero after spending years in the wilderness when he tried to change his swing with disastrous results leading to a complete loss of confidence. Rivero who lives in Spain has him swinging as of old, and his form is returning. Quiros had 6 wins by 2011 and was in the world's top 20 when he changed things. He is now ranked #435 in the world.

In contention playing his front nine is Canada's Austin Connelly, 69 and -1 so far today, so -4 total. Connelly is plying his trade as a member of the European Tour with some success, his best finish was 2nd last year at the KLM Open and T14 at the 146th Open.

He has played 7 events so far this his 2nd full year without missing a cut and is ranked #216.

Follow his progress on my live leaderboard above.
