Arnold Palmer Invitational Sunday tee times/leaderboard here.
With a few fans and the kind of fireworks Arnold Palmer provided during his long career, it was a memorable Saturday on his Bay Hill course, and through it all Canada's Corey Connors continued his steady at times brilliant play with a -1 71 and at -10 he is just a shot off the lead held by the European Tour player of the Year, Lee Westwood who had his best round here -7 65 -11 total.
Here's how I saw it.
Jordan Spieth, after all the understandable gushing from the NBC crew, had Lady Luck carrying his bag, and will not win here today playing like he did on Saturday. His -4 68 was boosted by a hole in 1 at the second, after a 25 footer found the hole for birdie at the 1st. More luck at #3 after a brutal duck hook drive well into the water, left him with a 40 footer for par which he made, and that would be a theme for his day.
He made half a dozen 20-30 footers,7 to save par, and he holed out from the bunker at the sixth. Luck evens out in the long run, he used all his up yesterday. He's at -9.
Bryson DeChambeau is like the John Daly of yesterday year and again his exciting 68 will be remembered for his 380 yard smash over the lake at the par 5 6th, but also because he had a fair share of things going his way, like his approach to the 18th after a poor drive into the thick right rough left him 180 yards over the water, which he foolishly went for, but he muscled it out and it just cleared the rocks onto the green.
He is at -10 with Corey, and won't be backing down with all the cameras on him today. Again it'll be tough to be that fortunate with all those poor choices with the wind expected today.
Lee Westwood had an eagle and 8 birdies in his 65, that will not likely happen again today. Lee was drinking with Arnie and Ernie Els in 1998 after Ernie won when Jordan Spieth was 4. He says he is delighted at 47 to be "playing in all these big events where you have to be in the top 50, like the Players next week and the Masters". He looks as fit as ever a tribute to his gym work and diet, he is still long off the tee and the claw grip has given him confidence in his putting, and he is playing with "house money" at his age. He will be the least nervous of the contenders come tee time today, and with the wind expected he could win it with a 68.
There are 9 players within 5 shots, including Keegan Bradley (64 -9), Tommy Fleetwood (68 -8), Rory McIlroy (72 -7) and Tyrrell Hatton defending champion who opened with 77, and has shot 67,66 to get to -6.
Weather: After rain overnight it will be a sunny day in Orlando, but the wind from the NNE will be the factor, up to 28kph, which will help separate the men from the boys.
Tee Times: Westwood and DeChambeau 1.55, Connors and Bradley 1.45, Spieth and Fleetwood 1.35
Rory says "I'd like it to get as windy as it can" to help his chances and it will, watch for Tommy Fleetwood at -8.
However I like the relaxed confidence Connors has been showing. He's driving it better than most anyone and has a great iron game going. The putter will be his key as always, so far so good and he has every chance today with all the attention on Spieth and DeChambeau early on.
It would also be nice if Lady Luck chose to be in his bag today.
